How valuable is Baynes?
Whatever Ainge decides to do with Baynes this summer is going to be very interesting.
This guy has gone from being a "decent" depth pick up who no one knew any thing about last summer who may have been expected to play 12-14 minutes
per game off the bench to a vital part (even starting some games) on our NBA championship contending team.
What does this do for his value to Boston heading into next season?
First, he fits in so well with this year's team on the emotional, hustle and effort stages. He rebounds, he scores at the rim fairly well, he blocks some shots,
he defends well against three positions and only fails defensively when on the perimeter matched up against the really good basket attacking
players (like LeBron James), he runs the floor as well as any big man in the league and he even has become decent from the three point line.
Win or lose against Cleveland (and, hopefully, Golden State) this guy has done far more than we (even Ainge and Stevens) could
have ever expected. Not sure what it will take to keep him, but it appears that he has earned more time in Boston.

As long as Celtic owners are willing to pay, Baynes will return next season.

You can’t have an all star at every position, he does the dirty work well enough, every championship team needs that element.

One question?
Would he thrive as much elsewhere?
Ie: the Stevens effect.

Hi,
One thing that Baynes needs to learn is to use his size and strength.
E.g. in the ECF he is the biggest and strongest player but there're quite a few moments when he didn't realize it, didn't punish the opponents enough.

Baynes was thriving in San Antonio back in 2014.
That's why he got big money from the Pistons in the summer of 2015.

Well with us this season he made 4.3 million, so the team can offer him a new deal for the same plus an 8 percent pay increase, or offer him the MLE which after paying off smart will be about 5.5 million or so.
Those are the owners options.
Our MLE will be smaller than some other teame due to going over into luxury tax land. For the teams over the cap but under the luxury cap they will have something around 8.5 million or so to work with.

Re: How valuable is Baynes?
he is one of the best I've seen recently at screening off players in the paint and allowing his team mate to get to the rim easier.
not having his bird rights is a real pain for sure.
do I understand that if Baynes re-signs for one more year, we would then have his early bird rights and can sign him to a two year contract after with few limitations?

Re: How valuable is Baynes?
He was the reason LeBron was so gassed at the end of the game last night. He bumped and pushed him off his favorite spots, and threw his offense off. By the time LeBron walked off the court he looked like a tired guy.
Smart, instinctive move by Stevens. I just wonder if they will foul him out of the game in Cleveland ?????
The King will get his protection at home.
I cannot get over, no matter how physical Cleveland played, they complained all night long about calls. It is sickening watching it. That is why the Celtics have no reason to complain themselves. I wish it would stop

Baynes is very valuable. Thompson is kept completely in check when he is on the court, James gets fouled hard, and he is around every rebound. Even if his salary triples, WELL WORTH the money.

Slightly off topic, but . . .
If you could only have one of the following next season, who do you pick;
Baynes, Monroe, Okafor or Noel?

Re: How valuable is Baynes?
Baynes over Okafor and Monroe for sure. Noel is intriguing. Starting Baynes neutralized Thompson, who killed us in Cleveland.

Re: How valuable is Baynes?
I was excited when we got Monroe, but unfortunately his defense and movement is that bad, in certain matchups he can still help, but this deep in the playoffs, doesn’t look like those good matchups are out there. Friends from PA have told me Okafor cannot defend or rebound at all, in the little I saw him with the Nets, I would have to agree. Noel could be a mobile energetic defender with length, would have to do research on why he got no playing time. Baynes is an impact defender who relishes contact and has already made huge contributions to this run, my kinda guy he deserves to be resigned....hope we can afford
him.
him.

Baynes' numbers don't stand out.
The things he does, on the court, to help his team win cannot be measured by stats.

Re: How valuable is Baynes?
Tough call between Baynes and Okafor for me. 1 is D, 1 is O. If Okafor could get regular minutes, I'm convinced he would be a game changer. In Boston, his inside game would compliment the shooters nicely. He also can defend and board better than he's given credit for.
Noel is too big a risk, I think. To me he's one minor injury away from a career change.

Baynes has the Marcus Smart qualities - mental and physical toughness and the will to win.

The problem is Okafor also defends slow like Monroe.

NY,
If Okafor could be signed for a vet minimum contract, we could have both Baynes and Okafor. That would be a good way to start the new season, IMO. That would allow us to continue with the success that we have with Baynes and then, just maybe Brad could get Okafor back to how he played in his rookie season mixed in with a few lessons as to how to go about playing defense the Celtics way.
I thought the pick one of the four would be a good exercise to see how people's thinking has evolved. Not that long ago, many fans wanted to move heaven and earth to get first Monroe, then Okafor and lastly, Noel. Baynes never got a mention on any fan's requests for a big man.

I would change the question , to which TWO players would you prefer to have here next season.
Lets assume that Baynes or Monroe would resign with their limited pay raises, which allows Danny to use either the MLE ($5.5M?) or a vet minimum deal ( $1.5- $2.3M) for either of the following players:
Dwayne Dedmon- player option from Atlanta for $6.3M,, solid back up center with length played a year at SA after Baynes left and might want to play for a winner again.
N. Noel- needs to remake his career right now after a bad year at Dallas. was born nearby I guess too.
J. Okafor- another player who is a reclamation project like Noel.
all three players are likely FA's this coming year.
My preference is to get Baynes re-signed , sportstrac has his cap hold at $5.1M. I am not sure if that would be his max salary or not. I believe we acquire Baynes early bird rights after his second year here.
IF we still have the MLE to use then I would replace Monroe with Dedmon or Noel as I feel either one would fit better into what this team does.
IF we do not have the MLE and can only use Minimum deals, I would look at Okafor to replace Monroe next year.
IN the end Keeping Baynes and replacing MOnroe with Okafor might be fine and save a few dollars over all.

Baynes is very important. Monroe is likely gone.
I think a two year deal would be good. Maybe 6 mill per.

2 year deal for who?
I thought all we could offer was the MLE which I think is about $5.5M or so?
with Baynes and Monroe I think we can give them a raise of up to 8% (someone else here said the 8% rule). In that case we still have the MLE to use on another player.
