The Boston Celtics are in the thick of a tight Eastern Conference playoff race. But they have three good reasons to do some Western Conference scoreboard-watching after the All-Star break.
NBA POWER RANKINGS: Where do C's stand entering All-Star Weekend?
The Celtics own the rights to three selections in the 2019 NBA Draft that aren't their own:
1. Sacramento Kings' first-round pick (top-1 protected) or Philadelphia 76ers' first-round pick; whichever is higher
2. Los Angeles Clippers' first-round pick (top-14 protected)
3. Memphis Grizzlies' first-round pick (top-8 protected)
The C's essentially are guaranteed to land the Kings pick, so the worse Sacramento is this season, the better Boston's selection.
But the Grizzlies and Clippers picks are a bit more complicated.
If L.A. doesn't make the playoffs this season, the Celtics wouldn't get its pick this season, instead receiving its 2020 first-rounder, protected for the top 14. If the Clippers miss the playoffs again next season, that pick falls to a second-rounder in 2022.
If Memphis' pick lands in the top eight, it becomes the Grizzlies' 2020 first-round pick, protected for the top six picks. If that pick doesn't convey and lands in the top six next season, Boston would get its unprotected first-rounder in 2020.
Got all that? Good.
With the All-Star break upon us and roughly 25 games left in the regular season, here's every pick the Celtics would have in the 2019 NBA Draft if the season ended today, based solely on the current NBA standings.
FIRST ROUND
No. 14 overall (via Kings)
No. 18 overall (via Clippers)
No. 23 overall (own)
SECOND ROUND
No. 53 overall (own)
You'll notice the Grizzlies pick isn't on that list. Memphis currently owns the sixth-worst record in the NBA, so unless the lottery balls bounce in Boston's favor and give the Grizzlies a No. 9 pick or lower, the C's wouldn't get that pick.
Here's who's "ahead" of Memphis for picks seven through nine:
6. Grizzlies, 23-36
7. Wizards, 24-34, 1.5 games ahead
8. Pelicans, 26-33, 3 games ahead
9. Mavericks, 26-31, 4 games ahead
The Grizzlies would need to pass three teams and make up four games for Boston to have an odds-on shot of acquiring its pick, which seems like a tall task after they traded All-Star Marc Gasol at the deadline.
That means the C's may have to wait for the pick -- which wouldn't be a bad thing, considering Memphis shows no signs of improvement.

Re: Celtics 2019 draft pick watch: Where do assets stand at All-Star break?
I doubt any players we get with a pick below the top 5 will be a rotational player as a rookie.
for me right now Bassey or Porter with the Kings pick works as future replacements for Horford perhaps.
I don't think we get the Clippers pick this year.
while Tre Jones would be a steal with out own pick that late. Hero might become a rotational Guard in the NBA in time there also.
Draftnet has Romeo Langford way low in their mock here and if he was there with the Kings pick Danny should probably pull the trigger there, he could develop into that light out shooter we've been looking for.
in that case players like PJ Washington (think Brandon Bass) or Fernando would be other options for me later.

Small correction. The Memphis pick becomes unprotected in 2021, not 2020.

Re: Celtics 2019 draft pick watch: Where do assets stand at All-Star break?
kdp,
Great job keeping up with the draft composite.
Still in the zone for Gafford or Bassey in my wish list. Potentially both since they've dropped some.
Bol Bol or Jontay Porter if there is reason to believe their injuries aren't a factor, and the risk worth taking. Both would probably have been lottery picks if not for the injuries.
I still think a point guard goes third if three picks are actually made. I like Haggans or Jerome. Tre Jones apparently returning to school.
For a late gamble, or an undrafted signee, I still think Ethan Happ is a big worth looking at.
Pretty much the same group I've been thinking since mid-season. Big, Big, PG, would be my target order.
Regards

this was the most recent draft thread I could find so I stuck it here... the aggregate is useful as a snapshot in time if nothing else, as far as seeing what the webs' ether has guys ranked.
god, its so hard to know right now, where this team may stand on draft day, isn't it?
I mean will Irving be coming back on a new max deal, one would assume that means Rozier and Morris would both me gone.
or Will the Celtics' under achieve come playoff time and Irving decides to move on..in that case All of Morris, Rozier and Theis would likely be back (or one would think).
and what about that big trade for Davis?
if that happens, we may only have one pick at best, IMO.
anyhow...I like Bassey also, even if he hasn't quite had the freshman year many thought. He does remind me of a VERY young Al Horford a bit.
so with that thought, why not take a chance on Bol ( one can't teach 7-2 height and he does have the NBA bloodline) if hes there at 14 then go Bassey at 18or19th pick.
draft the best young Guard left with our own.
I still like PJ Washington, as an option somewhere, but he's up to 19th in this composite...for me thats getting out of the range I'd want to pick him.
in the end I think those of us who enjoy the annual draft and potential may be disappointed with Danny moving most of our picks one way or another starting this year. I think he is no longer in the collecting of young talent and is now in the chasing a title mode.
