NBA Rumors: Anthony Davis Narrows Down Destinations To Knicks, Lakers

NESN by Abigail Adams on Mon, Jun 10, 2019 at 10:11PM

Seems like Anthony Davis is getting closer to selecting a new long-term destination. Rumors surrounding Davis’ trade talks have been swirling for months. Several teams have expressed an interested in the 26-year-old star including the Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers to name a few. But according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, league sources claim Davis has narrowed his choices down to two teams: the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Should he go to the Lakers, Davis would have the opportunity to play alongside the likes of LeBron James. Going to the Knicks, however, would mean Davis would likely be the face of the team. This does not spell good news for teams like the Celtics that have taken a recent interest in Davis. But it doesn’t necessarily rule them out of a potential deal altogether, either. If teams other than the Knicks and the Lakers want a shot at Davis, they’ll have to make one heck of an offer. And with free agency opening soon, anything can happen. Davis has spent seven seasons with New Orleans, averaging 23.4 points per game.

Danny,

Let those teams get sucked into a bad deal. One guy does not make a team. Go get another center that does not mortgage our future by giving away valuable assets.

Capela could be that guy.

With NY, they would probably have to trade Knox, Robinson, #3, other draft picks and other assets.
AD would be the only guy until free agency starts.

The Lakers would have two of the top 10 players in the league, enough money for another superstar and hopefully be able to keep one of Ball, Ingram or Kuzma.

A Capela trade to Boston is interesting.
What players would Boston need to trade to make it a fair trade?

Kinda hard to tell, I don;t know what Houston is doing this off-season. Supposedly they are putting everyone up on the trading block (maybe except Harden). They are playing hardball with an extension for D'antoni in a bid to get him to quit, IMO.

that all sounds like tearing it all down to me, but I don't know. From my perspective they have gone as far as they can with this group for sure.

so if they are looking to rebuild this off-season, then they will be looking for young, cheap players and draft picks for Capela (or any other player they can move).

some here have spoken of a Tatum or Brown for Capela deal, but for me the Celtics would be getting the lesser player there so I don't like either of those deals. Not to mention the salarys are not close for a one on one deal.

Capela has a $14.9M salary next season.

so a Tatum, #14 pick and Baynes (if he opts in) or Yabusele should work salary wise. But again I am NOT trading Tatum OR Brown for Capela myself.

on the other hand IF Houston is just re-tooling , then a deal like

Capela and Gordon ($14 M)

for

Horford ( $30.1M, opts in) and #14 pick could make sense I suppose.

Though I'm not sure why Houston would want to get even OLDER.

in other words....I have no idea of what deal would work, without adding a third team.

I don't want to trade Tatum for Capela either. But that helps the numbers. I think Houston wants to dump salaries long term.

I’d rather have Brown or Tatum currently than Capela. Capela took a while to develop. Williams showed more as a rookie than Capela had done in his first year. Also Capela isn’t the prototypical center of today’s nba. He doesn’t have any projection as a ball handler or shooter. If they want to try and develop that kind of player, take Nic Claxton in the draft.

It does not really matter where Davis thinks he wants to go. It's about which team can put the best package together.

Danny will not give away the store but still can assemble the best package (more draft picks)

Houston will want one of our wings and a pick for Capela. Danny should have drafted Capela in 2014 instead of wasting the 17th pick on James Young.

In reality, it could matter what team AD wants to play for.
If most teams feel he has a good chance of non re-signing with them, those teams most likely will not put together competitive trade offers for AD.

The Durant injury could become a factor in NY's AD hopes.
If Durant is out for the year, that will be one great player who can't be signed to play with AD in NY.
If AD is traded to NY, who will he play with?

As I have said many times a lot of rumors are BS. The NY area teams both have Irving and Durant going there. So now you take Durant out of the equation (Never thought he would leave GS anyways) and you are left with Kyrie. Now we hear Davis wants NY or LA and we know the Nets do not have the assets to trade for him. NY and LA should be below the CAP this summer so money does not have to match. They can take on more salary. Either team will have to part with significant assets to make it work. NOLA is playing things the right way so far. The Celtics can choose to make a deal or not make a deal and they will still have a competitive team. LA and NY are both better off using CAP space to sign free agents than using players and draft assets to make a trade. If LA cannot get Davis now next year will be Lebron's 3rd year in LA . He will turn 36 next year and the wear and tear of playing so many games has already impacted his playing ability. I do not see a lot of high end free agents flocking to either LA or NY.

I agree with your point that NY and LA should use the draft and then cap space to sign free agents.
I would be happy with the Lakers keeping their current team, adding the #4 pick and a max contract player.
But, an Anthony Davis trade would be easy to be excited about.
The issue is will any free agent players come sign with LA?
My gut tells me Jimmy Butler would be happy to sign with the Lakers. I'm mostly happy with that.
I'd also be happy with Kuzma, Lebron, AD and a max slot open. Would that motivate Kyrie to sign with the Lakers if Ball is on his way to New Orleans or somewhere else in an AD trade?
Would Kemba Walker want to sign with the Lakers to play with those three?
I also agree that there are so many rumors.
Some are more than rumors.
Some rumors are fact based and purposely leaked.
Some rumors are just people's opinions.
I do put a lot of stock in rumors from Woj or Shams.

I am not sure why any team would trade for Davis until he agrees to sign with said team for additional years.

Considering him coming to the Cs for one year..It would take Smart,Tatum and maybe Williams to make the salaries numbers work plus at least the 14th pick and/or the Memphis pick for next year (or the year after). Whatever the Cs give up will likely only get them Davis for one year so, the bottom line of giving away a couple of draft picks, Tatum, Williams and Smart while also losing Davis next summer is just too big of a gamble, in my opinion.
