http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/sports/celtics/index.php/2010/06/25/ainge-perkins-may-have-torn-acl/

After some confusion over the condition of Kendrick Perkins, Danny Ainge said last night the team now believes that the Celtics center may have torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Game 6 against the Lakers. It was initially believed that Perkins had torn the medial collateral ligament and posterior cruciate ligaments in the knee.

Both may also be partially torn, according to Ainge.

All information, based at the moment on an MRI exam, won’t be known until Dr. Brian McKeon finally performs the surgery. Though initially penciled in for today, Ainge said last night that Perkins may not have surgery for another week in an attempt to allow the swelling to subside.
Ainge also said it is unknown whether Perkins’ recovery from surgery will mean missing the first part of next season.

The Celtics center had raised the concern on his own that he might miss part of the 2010-11 season.

“I honestly don’t know,’’ said Ainge. “(Doctors) want to wait until surgery, and actually get in there to see what’s going on, before they make that decision.’’

Said Rivers: “I had the same surgery – the triangle - and I was out a year, but that was back when they had 8-track.’’

The 2010 playoffs could be the last time we ever see 'meanmuggin' KP contribute on the Boston Celtics...

Who knows how hes going to play once he returns from injury.

I'm afraid the knee injury could negate Perk's speed advantage. But, on the positive side, if it keeps him glued to the floor when he sets picks, it could be a blessing in disguise.

Rather than watching multiple separate threads about Kendrick Perkins, we thought it might be wise to have one official thread.

If another thread gets started about Perk, we will merge it into this one.

We hope this is agreeable to all members.

Official Kendrick Perkins 2010 Offseason thread Empty Perk, his ACL tear, and the power of prayer

Post by worcester Fri Jul 02, 2010 4:59 pm

True story: Today a patient came in, a highly successful professional woman, who told me about her experience with an ACL tear. She'd been skiing, injured her knee, and being friends with the NY Knicks team surgeon who specializes in knee repair, went to him for a consult and then an MRI. The medical imaging revealed that she had torn her ACL and medial meniscus, and the doc scheduled her for surgery.

She mentioned to a friend who is a trainer for those in the Christian Science Church who want to do faith healings that she'd torn up her ACL and was going for surgery. The friend said she and her group would pray for her, and my patient thought nothing more about it.

When she went for surgery, the orthopod opened up her knee and found that the ACL had repaired itself (!) and did not knee surgery, but he did operate on her torn meniscus. Amazed, she later told her Christian Science friend what happened, who replied: "You should have told me there was something wrong with your meniscus."

I'm not saying we should all pray for Perk's knee, because all season I prayed without much result that he'd learn how to catch the ball on those passes in the post from Rondo, but who knows what the collective will of this board might engender.

Some things are just unexplainable. (like me passing my Bio regents in high school)
or
Cancer tumors that just disappear for no reason and such other things.

I don't anticipate any "miracles" with Perk but hope that he's back to close to 100% come the end of next season (regular season that is)

There's also the possibility of an inaccurate pre-op diagnosis.

I had surgery three years ago for spinal stenosis. The surgery was minimally invasive, even though the drilled a hole in my spine. I literally danced a jig in my hotel room about five hours after the surgery, with a single band aid covering the point of entry.

Three years later, the back pain symptoms really haven't changed. Physicians keep telling me spinal stenosis continues to be the problem, so I assumed the surgeon didn't get it all.

I told my primary care physician I had a lot of doubt about the "easy answers" I was getting from specialist. So he set up a new MRI and an appointment with a very highly regarded othopedic surgeon at New England Baptist Hospital (the Boston mecca for orthopedic problems). This guy took one look at the MRI and said, "You no longer have spinal stenosis, except perhaps very tiny traces. Your surgery basically got rid of any that you had." (He showed specific proof of his contention on the MRI.) "Besides, spinal stenosis usually affects the legs (particularly the sciatic nerve); what you have is much more likely to be arthritis, which can very possibly be addressed with cortisone shots."

So I'm scheduled for my first-ever cortisone shot this week and am terminally pissed at the quacks who have been telling me for three years that I still have spinal stenosis and should basically live with it. And, after three years of berating the Florida surgeons who operated on my spine, I now realize they did their job (and quite possibly saved me a lot of sciatic pain) but there was another hidden and unaddressed problem that no one caught until now.

I'm not sure there's still time to resume my tap dancing career, but it sure would be nice to play a little softball.

Bottom line: Perk's doctors won't be entirely sure of the nature of the problem or its severity or prognosis until they get in there. Here's hoping it's as fast-healing as possible.

Sam, What a relief that you finally got a second opinion that leads to a promising course of action. I'm a BIG believer in 2nd opinions. Let's hope when Perk's swelling has gone down ihis knee is not as bad as everyone is now assuming it to be. As for praying, I hope our entire board prays that when Perk receives a pass from Rondo near the basket he will
1. NOT take the ball down to the floor like he so often did, thus giving opponents a chance tod efend him, and
2. instead takes it right up to the rim for a shot.

Good luck with your arthritis treatments!

Sam,

I've had cortisone shots in my knee, including after having it drained. It seems to work well in reducing swelling, easing discomfort and increasing flexibility. It takes 3 days to a week to work which my doctor and anyone I've talked to who has had it tells me is normal.

A little discomfort going in but well worth it.

Let us know how it feels dancing the jig again!

Sam,

Over the past 5 years or so, my left knee has gotten kinda "creaky". Nothing sharp and painful, like a torn ligament or cartilage, but not wanting to do what it used to do and letting me know it. I'm not sure I can describe it better than that. It's that "I'm getting old" feeling. To be honest, I never had it diagnosed, but I suspect it's somewhat arthritic.

I take Hyaluronic Acid for this and it has resulted in a tremendous improvement. I'm not back to my early childhood, of course, but it's much, much better.

HA is a benefit for rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. I take one pill orally once a day. I buy them at a health food/dietary supplement store.

My mother developed an extremely painful shoulder. You couldn't touch her shoulder without her screaming. We took her to a neurologist (who said it wasn't nerve related) and then to an orthopedist who said she had arthritis and perhaps a damaged rotator cuff. Given her age and condition, surgery was out of the question. So we gave her hyaluronic acid 3x/day for a few weeks and then dropped her down to 1x/day as a maintenance dose. Her pain in her shoulder just about went away and she never mentioned it again.

http://www.vitaminstuff.com/supplements-hyaluronic-acid.html
http://www.discount-vitamins-herbs.net/hyaluronic-acid.htm

If it works for you (please insert here every caveat and disclaimer you've ever heard before), it is a cheap, completely uninvasive alternative to steroids (which cortisone is).

You can also have HA injected but that is a much bigger step up than the one I have taken. Even so, it might be an alternative to steroid injections.

Hyaluronic also has a hydrating effect on cells (the hydration helps with the joints too). Women use it to help with "age lines". I'm sure Mrs. Sam will be happy to hear that too. She might start poaching your pills.

Bob,

Thanks for that info. My mother has Parkinsons and although she doesnt "shake or tremble" she really has trouble "making herself go" and some of this is arthritic in nature..............perhaps she may also benifit from this too, I'll have to check it out for her.

beat,

Taken orally, I am not aware of any adverse side effects or contraindications. If you're searching for possible alternative solutions this is the cheapest one I know. It involves no doctor visits, no X-rays or MRIs, no blood tests. You either feel better or you don't and whether to increase the dose or backoff is completely within your control.

Here's the brand I started off with. It is not the brand I use now (my local shop has it's own brand, same good stuff, but it like buying Walgreen's brand instead of the big name brand) but it is what got me going and made me a believer. 3X/day, this is 20 days worth, but this looks like it's stronger strength. That's ok, if you want to see if it works...After this bottle, if it delivers, you can back off to 1-2x per day and that will stretch it out. Still, $20 for 20 days isn't the end of the world financially, especially if it has a profound effect on your quality of life....

Post by bobheckler Sat Jul 03, 2010 1:42 pm

sam and beat,

There's another thing I should mention.

I developed "Trigger Finger", also probably 5 years back.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trigger_finger
The cause of Trigger Finger is largely unknown, but the symptoms are an inflammation at a joint, which stretches the tendon over it, resulting in a popping when you move the joint and the tendon slips around the inflammation instead of going over it.

I got a cortisone shot in my hand (it's was actually my pinkie on my dominant hand that got it, not my pointer finger (aka trigger finger), and I was good for a year. I was told that if it came back, the only solution is surgery. Well, the idea of someone cutting up my dominant hand didn't appeal to me. So, I looked for an alternative.

Bromelain is the natural digestive aid in pineapples. When taken on a full stomach, it will help your stomach break down the food and digest it. Very helpful when you overeat (which, of course, none of us ever do).

Taken on an empty stomach, however, it has a different effect. It still looks for stuff to break down but, since your stomach is empty, it goes out into your body and breaks down inflammations. My trigger finger is gone now. Gone.

The -itis in arthritis means "inflammation".

Hyaluronic Acid hydrates joints, creates cartilage and connects it. Good stuff for joints that aren't as fluid as they used to be. Bromelain reduces inflammation, which is a source of pain and limited movement in arthritic joints.

I take 500mg of Bromelain, once a day, on an empty stomach (I wake up, walk into the bathroom and take it before I shower or anything else). This brand is good, but there are many others that are too:

I hope you get to meet Worcester some day. This guy is a true Renaissance Man. He takes on unique challenges as though they were a stick of gum. And, despite all his successes, he's loaded with humility. He's one of the most interesting people I've ever had the pleasure to meet.

Sam- you may have solved a mystery here.

Is Worcester have a "personality so magnetic that he is unable to carry credit cards" ?

Is he "the life of parties he's never attended" ?

Do "sharks have a week dedicated to him" ?

Could Worcester be "the most interesting man in the world" ?

That would be cool if he was on this board! Very Happy

He's right up there. I mean, suppose you knew virtually nothing about construction. Would you decide to undertake the development of a "green" condo medium-rise in Sarasota? And would you do it well enough so that, heading into the recent terrible housing market, the condos were mostly sold out when they were finished? (I saw them, and they are amazing.) Then would one of your next adventures be to apply for the presidency of a college? And all the while pursuing a career as a Doctor of Acupuncture and (I believe) alternative mediciine.
