The culprit. This tree juts out into the road, we had to drive around the tip.

More downed trees in the same bunch. Notice the cars in the rear view mirror crossing the centerline.

Last Matthews picture. Notice a couple trees snapped off left of center of the photo.
Either pushed over at the base or snapped off up high, we never have seen anything like it.

Later that evening, I am watching the Celtics - Hawks game and just about at the end of the third quarter we heard a loud "BOOM"
and the lights go out.  The storm's over, so WTH?

Here is the base of a pole two houses away around the corner.

Quite a mess. The tree was leaning due to saturated soil and wind from the storm.
My neighbor noticed it leaning toward the road earlier in the afternoon. Delayed damage.

Here's some links:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/11-tornadoes-reported-across-south-as-deadly-storm-causes-power-outages-major-flooding/ar-BBZNezs?ocid=spartanntp

This daycare was two streets behind my daughters house, same neighborhood.  We drove past it yesterday, the news crews were still there.

The first storm in this report hit just north of us, where my youngest daughter lives In Concord.  The second one was south of us, in and near Matthews.

I also discussed this a bit at the end of the Game On! thread last night:

I sure do like this team, and with what GWill and the Placid Cat are showing the future is bright!

I lost my power at the end of the third quarter, that was not fun. I went outside and met the new neighbors, along with a bunch of old neighbors. We had a block party. That was fun.

A huge tree fell over across the power line at the end of the street. It eventually snapped the nearest pole like a twig. The tree was hollow six or more feet from the base. It was hard to see it in the dark. There was another tree at the corner of the same house that was leaning towards the street. It is being held up by another tree, it will eventually have to be dealt with. The ground must have been super saturated by the heavy rain yesterday.

I live in Charlotte. We had some tornadoes all around town yesterday. My daughter's neighborhood looks like a war zone. South Charlotte, Pineville-Matthews road area. She was home alone with the dog when it hit. The two boys were in school and her husband was at work. Their house is okay but houses all around hers were damaged, some were destroyed, mostly by fallen trees.

My wife took some pictures, maybe I'll post some tomorrow.

Anyway, Duke energy cut and isolated the downed line near our house and now we've got power back. They weren't so lucky around the corner, it may be until Sunday before they get power back. The Duke guy said that crews from Indy were coming down tomorrow to help fix our power outages all around town

I am going to watch the fourth quarter now, it may be fun!!!

Also in their back yard was a trampoline. It never moved. The boys and their cousin were jumping on it when we visited. Two streets over, they have some friends that got a new trampoline for Christmas. It ended on the roof of a house across the street.

Very random, what houses were affected by the tornado and which ones it skipped over.

We have nothing like that out here. We have earthquakes but while they might happen randomly the damage is not. It starts at the epicenter and works out radially from there. This is positively quixotic.

Things are just things. They generate memories, which survive, or can be replaced. What's important is that you and your family are safe.

Thank God your family survived this powerful storm.  It is the same system that came through Georgia.

Scary. Similar to what happened in Chatham last spring. More extreme weather is part of everyday weather now.

Happy to hear you're all OK!

We have friends in Matthews. If I've got it right, they told Nancy that as many as 6 of the 11 tornadoes that hit the Southeast were in and around Matthews
