basically Stephenson to LAC for M. Barnes and S. Hawes.

there had been rumors that Charlotte was even willing to give up (or swap a lower) first rounder , if someone would take Stephenson off their hands.

now Charlotte would appear to out of the Center game for draft picks in the first round, with Jefferson also opting in on his last year of his deal.

Lance Stephenson dealt to Clippers for Matt Barnes, Spencer Hawes

LOS ANGELES -- The Clippers acquired Lance Stephenson on Monday night in a trade with the Hornets that sends Matt Barnes and Spencer Hawes to Charlotte.

A similar deal had been proposed last season before the trade deadline but fell apart, sources said.

"We are pleased to add a pair of proven veterans to our team," Hornets general manager Rich Cho said in a news release. "Spencer Hawes is an experienced big man whose outside shooting gives us additional flexibility on offense. Matt Barnes is an experienced veteran who knows the NBA."

Lance Stephenson's Decline

After making a surprise impact for the Pacers in 2013-14, Lance Stephenson fell apart last season following a rich free-agent reward from the Hornets.

Stephenson signed a three-year, $27 million deal with the Hornets last summer that includes a team option for the final year so the Clippers would only be on the hook for this upcoming season if Stephenson doesn't pan out.

The Clippers have been trying to upgrade at the wing for years and since they are essentially at the cap now, the only way to significantly upgrade the position is through a trade.

While Stephenson, 24, struggled in his first season with the Hornets, averaging 8.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists while starting just 25 of the 61 games he played, the Clippers believe he can regain the form he had in Indiana if he came to Los Angeles.

Stephenson averaged 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists while starting 78 games two years ago for an Indiana Pacers team that won 56 games and advanced to the Eastern Conference finals.

The Pacers made Stephenson a five-year, $44 million contract offer after the season but Stephenson, who led the league in triple-doubles with five, felt the offer undervalued him before turning it down and signing with Charlotte.

The proposed trade was earlier reported by Yahoo! Sports.

"We'd like to thank Lance for his contributions last season," Cho said in the statement. "He was a consummate professional during his time with us."

While a change of scenery might help Stephenson, the Hornets may be hoping the same is true for Hawes, who signed a four-year, $23 million deal with the Clippers last summer.

Hawes struggled through his worst season since his rookie year, averaging 5.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists for the Clippers last season.

Hawes, 27, was buried at the end of the bench during the playoffs where he was held out of half of the Clippers' 14 postseason games and played more than 10 minutes just twice, both coming in blowouts.

Getting out from under his contract and starting with a clean slate after next season could be incentive enough for the Clippers to make the deal.

Barnes, 35, is in the final year of his contract and will make $3.5 million this upcoming season. He averaged 10.1 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists while starting 74 games last season.

Barnes' on-court temper and penchant for getting fined, however, constantly irked head coach and president of basketball operations Doc Rivers, who has been looking to deal Barnes for about two years.

Considering that Hornets may not keep Barnes and could wind up with Hawes (whom I've always considered a soft big who likes to bomb away), they really wanted to get rid of Stephenson.  Doc's taking a big chance on being able to harness Stephenson.

How does this affect the Celtics?  Obviously not at all, except to grease the skids a little more for trading fever.

I guess Doc traded one head case for another. Hawes is a soft center as Sam rightly described but can give Big Al a blow and some offensive minutes.

sam,

I'm of the opinion that all trades affect the Celtics.  Trades fill roster holes/increase depth on both teams or it's a straight salary dump.  Either way, it changes what those teams will be looking at/for in the draft, free agency and future trades and that creates opportunities for opportunists (oh, I don't know, maybe Danny?) to make something happen.

In the case of this trade the opportunity is one that I thought of last night and which Steve cited on the "Cost of Moving Up" thread.  http://www.celticsblog.com/2015/6/16/8788415/nba-trade-speculation-would-the-hornets-trade-down-with-the-celtics

By finding a back up for Big Al and, if is generally expected, they do not resign Bismack BiYOMMMMBOOOOO!!!! then their needs have changed, they don't need a center anymore, and trading down into the mid-first round to get that talent (and some grease for the difference in value between a #9 and #16) makes more sense now.
