Post by JerzeyCfan Sat Mar 07, 2020 8:58 am

Good morning to all!

I first want to thank this board for the years of enjoyment I have had coming here because of the insightful information you provide. I never wanted to be a member but I thought it was fitting to thank you all!  I love taking the train into NYC and reading the gems you provide every morning.

I wanted to thank the board admin for letting this thread live.

For 10 days now we have struggled with my daughter (17) being ill.  We went to the doctor last week and she was tested for flu A and B which was negative.  She has had a fever of close to 102 and cannot hold anything down.  The doctor said we need to let it run it's course as she thought it was a virus.  Yesterday, my daughter tried to eat something which was not pretty.  We took her to the emergency room and they gave her fluids and did many tests including an x-ray for her lungs.  She was diagnosed with the Coronavirus NL63 and sent home.   We were told it is not the Corona 19 one which is more powerful.  We are hoping she starts to feel better but this virus is brutal.

Funny, I do not think she was tested for Corona 19.  I did hear those test kits are expensive and in limited supply.

Finally, I truly want to thank Worchester for everything he brings to the board including suggesting the supplement our family is using.

Thank you again and I love you all,
Bill

Dear JerzeyCFan, I hope your daughter gets well soon, and I don't want to make light of her serious illness, but...

The City of Worcester a few years ago issued press releases, pamphlets, and even T-shirts which boldly proclaim: "Get the H out of Worcester.." which the public dubbed the "Get the Hell out of Worcester" campaign!

A few notables who lived in Worcester -
Bob Cousy, who lived on Salisbury Street, 1/4 mile from my home (still does I think)
Tom Heinsohn, who lived on May Street. 1 mile from my home

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_from_Worcester,_Massachusetts

Denis Leary
Abbie Hoffman ( a creep - I met him once)
Carmella, WWE Wrestler
Alicia Witt, my favorite
Arthur Kennedy, the actor
George Bancroft, founder of the U.S. Naval Academy
Robert Goddard, who basically invented modern rocketry
Daniel Wesson, of Smith and Wesson gun fame
Harvey Ball, who created the smiley face
J. Geils (my ex married one of his band members)
Robert Benchley
Stanley Kunitz
John Michael Hayes, writer of the Alfred Hitchcock films Rear Window, To Catch a Thief,
The Trouble with Harry, and The Man Who Knew Too Much
Myra Kraft, philanthropist, wife of New England Patriots Owner Bob Kraft
Irving Price, co-founder of Fisher Price toys and games
Dorothea Dix, reformer and activist

Bill,

Welcome to the forum!

I hope your daughter recovers quickly. We're in western NY state and there are a variety of viruses going around, none of them the type you can just quickly brush off. It's certainly even worse having a child contract one of these illnesses than getting it yourself. That anxious feeling is tough to deal with.

I can safely say that we all hope you soon post about how great your daughter is feeling, and that you share your thoughts on the Celtics. Perhaps we can continue to help make that train ride a little more interesting.

Hi Bill.  Welcome to the board.  I hope this encourages you to drop in more often.  The first post is always the hardest.

I want to add my well wishes to your daughter and family.  17 year olds are amazingly resilient creatures.

There is still a lot of confusion, due to the relative lack of solid scientific study available yet, as to exactly what COVID-19 is capable of and what it is not capable of.  While I realize your daughter does not have the more dangerous COVID-19, the one that's currently in the news, she does have a coronavirus.  We have several members with compromised immune systems on this board.  I'm sure they would be eager to hear updates from you about your daughter and her progress, if you wouldn't mind sharing that with us.  It's a lesser virus, afflicting an otherwise healthy teenager, but there are similarities because they are from the same "family" of viruses.  I'm sure Worcester would be interested in hearing about this so he can fit this into his knowledge base, which he can (and I'm sure will) use to best effect with his patients in his real life.

Bill.....There is nothing worse than watching your child (no matter what the age) suffer from any sickness.    I hope and pray for your Daughter’s recovery. Everything takes time and I am sure you are running out of patience.  Much good health to all.

Good morning,

I wanted to give you a heads up on my daughter and the small amount I have learned. My friend is an infectious disease doctor. I spoke to him last night. He said that the virus my daughter has could last 8 weeks. He has a patient that lasted that long. My other daughter who is in school just texted us that they closed the medical school.

We are going to another doctor today as she cannot hold food down and still has a temp after 2 weeks.

Have a good day all,
Bill

Doctor confirmed today like emergency room doctor not to hospitalize because both said she would catch other things! More tests tomorrow and she has had so many tests already!

Funny, I really don't think they tested for 19 even though her symptoms are there. I was just watching a show on TV and the doctor asked you to watch for symptoms. The symptoms he said are those of my daughter!

Nuts!

I hope she finds out soon what it is so they can treat her and get her on the road to recovery. Not knowing what it is has to be driving you crazy. You are better off out of the emergency rooms, who knows what is lurking around the corner. I have a real fetish about these things. I spent the day at MGH in Boston Friday and could not wait to get out of there, then they made me stay over night. My son and my husband could not get in there quick enough to get me on Saturday!!!!!

Now I have been told that I have to go back for two more procedures. But they are taking their time scheduling me so I wonder if there is a reason

I hope your daughter gets better soon, she is young, hopefully she will be able to fight what is going on with the help of the proper diagnosis. Good luck to you all, and God Bless her

This is a cut-and-paste of a post from another thread:

I just skimmed a presentation by the top epidemiologist in China and Dr. Fauci of the CDC today.  It's an hour and a half long.  I'm not a doctor, but I can read PowerPoint slides and graphs and I skipped through it, stopping when I saw new slides and graphs.  The attack rate, the % of people who come in contact who are tested positive, is 30%.  Remember SARS, the global pandemic from a decade ago?  SAR stands for Secondary Attack Rate, the rate at which a positive case transmits to another.  The attack rate for SARS was 20%.  15% of positive COVID-19 cases are "serious" and 5% are "critical".  That means 20% of 30% are serious or worse.

The #1 underlying health issue that makes it worse is, surprisingly, blood pressure.  The next 2 are pulmonary:
cardiac and lung disease.  4th is diabetes.

Here's the link for those interested.

I’ll trust you Bob, I am scared enough!!! I just got the call tonight to go in for a stent to be put into my coronary artery, it is too close to the aortic valve and they are afraid that after going in and fixing the valve I will end up with a bigger issue if they do not do this.  Naturally, not being as young as I used to be, all this talk is worrisome. But....as that grand old lady, My Mom, used to say, What Will Be Will Be

A Public Health Announcement about Coronavirus - Page 2 Empty Re: A Public Health Announcement about Coronavirus

Post by worcester Thu Mar 12, 2020 8:35 am

31 years ago I had a severe attack of viral encephalitis...fever of 104 for 4 days. My rbc dropped precipitously. What cured me overnight was IV vitamin C - and not that high a dose - only 1000 mg. That's what made this article interesting to me:
Andrew Saul, over at the Orthomolecular Medicine News Service writes:

"Shanghai Government Officially Recommends Vitamin C for COVID-19"

(OMNS Mar 3, 2020) The government of Shanghai, China has announced its official recommendation that COVID-19 should be treated with high amounts of intravenous vitamin C. (1) Dosage recommendations vary with severity of illness, from 50 to 200 milligrams per kilogram body weight per day to as much as 200 mg/kg/day.

These dosages are approximately 4,000 to 16,000 mg for an adult, administered by IV. This specific method of administration is important, says intravenous therapy expert Atsuo Yanagisawa, MD, PhD, because vitamin C's effect is at least ten times more powerful by IV than if taken orally. Dr. Yanagisawa is president of the Tokyo-based Japanese College of Intravenous Therapy. He says, "Intravenous vitamin C is a safe, effective, and broad-spectrum antiviral."

Richard Z. Cheng, MD, PhD, a Chinese-American specialist physician, has been working closely with medical and governmental authorities throughout China. He has been instrumental in facilitating at least three Chinese clinical IV vitamin C studies now underway. Dr. Cheng is presently in Shanghai continuing his efforts to encourage still more Chinese hospitals to implement vitamin C therapy incorporating high oral doses as well as C by IV.

Dr. Cheng and Dr. Yanagisawa both recommend oral vitamin C for prevention of COVID-19 infection.

I must warn, however, that in 1993 I took IV chelation to rid myself of heavy metals and the doctor added 15,000 mg. of Vit C to the IV bag. The next day I developed a severe kidney stone with dramatic renal colic, vomiting, loss of electrolytes, a severe kidney infection, and my pulse rate dropped to 37! When I woke up in the hospital they's removed a big kidney stone from my ureter. Moral: Everything in moderation. Two or 3 grams of Vitamin C orally is a good idea. It won't prevent corona virus infection but may mitigate its severity. I'm also taking humic/folic acid 5% -6 drops mixed in 6 oz. of water three times a day to retard viral replication if I do get infected.

Note to Bob H - we go out Saturday to do a magnetometer survey on an area where the side scan sonar images look to be of a shipwreck...just a few hundred feet southeast of where we did our mag survey.

worcester,

Good luck on the mag survey. That was a great experience (not almost getting heat stroke on the boat on the 1st day out so much, but after that...). The upgrades in boats and equipment must be making it SO much better.

The medical presentation in that link I provided was interesting, at least as interesting as I was able to understand of it. You'll understand more of it. I just dragged the cursor along until I saw a screen with words or a picture on it, which got me through it faster. I didn't listen to what they said because it was medical-speak.

A Public Health Announcement about Coronavirus - Page 2 Empty Re: A Public Health Announcement about Coronavirus

Post by Shamrock1000 Fri Mar 13, 2020 9:56 pm

While there is undoubtedly some truth to the argument that the mortality rate of the new Corona virus might be elevated since mild cases are not considered, the subsequent conclusion that it will end up with a mortality rate similar to flu is false. That hypothesis ignores the certainty that mild flu cases also go undetected. I have had flus probably every other year of my life, and I have never once had a PCR test that conclusively indicated influenza in my body. Most never even see a doctor when they get the flu, they just ride it out. So, it seems likely that flu mortality would be at least as over estimated as Corona. Assuming the two mortality rates are approximately equally over estimated, that means Corona is anywhere between 10 and 30 times more deadly than flu. Regardless of absolute mortality rates, that doesn't make me feel good. Corona is not just a flu.
