Celtics DECLINE to make Qualifying Offer to Wanny

Per source, although the Celtics declined to issue Brad Wanamaker a qualifying offer, there remains a chance that he could return to Boston, particularly if Hayward does not.

Just a reminder: Brad Wanamaker was not extended qualifying offer last offseason either by the Celtics but the team still re-signed him later in free agency.

doesn't that mean he now becomes a UFA only?
do we have early bird rights for him at all?

kdp,
Off the top of my head (without verifying) he is a UFA and we have no Bird rights.
Vet min or other exception (BAE, MLE) to sign him back.

[edit] This will test the interest in him from around the league.

Danny would probably bring him back for short money but Danny is not going to go beyond that. BW was a very solid rotation guy for us last season.

don't need him now we have Pritchard who'll be on a three year deal.
plus 16 roster spots if Hayward stays (we'll have to see about J. Green and Semi's contracts soon).

They need to somehow hang onto Wanamaker. Considering that it looks like NOBODY wants to play here, he is a solid player.

Per sources, Semi Ojeleye's status could be affected by Hayward situation and other potential deals but as of now it's appearing unlikely that he will be with the Celtics beyond Saturday's guarantee date.

We're going to need to get active and find a way to bring in a PG behind Kemba.
If Hayward stays gone that opens up a slight amount.
We may have to abandon the big man search in order to find a PG now.
If RWIII and Theis can both stay healthy that will help.
EDIT; I didn't realize the Knicks dumped Elfrid Payton. He might be an affordable stop-gap for a season while they figure things out.

I am not so sure about that. We have Marcus, the new kid plus Waters and Edward's. Call me crazy but I am pretty comfortable with PP being a rotation PG.
The only concern is the knee issue for Kemba. They will manage his minutes and maybe not play him in btb games.
If he has to sit out games Marcus will step in.
The team is not set yet so more changes are to come. Danny may have to open up 2 more roster spots.

His contract becomes guaranteed tomorrow. He may be waived then.

It’s certainly Possible that’s how it shakes out.
My guess is Smart now sees most of his minutes as a wing in the starting unit. From the day he was drafted I thought he was a future All-Star as a 2 guard/wing and it looks like that’s exactly where he’s headed, especially with Hayward’s departure.
Edwards doesn’t have what it takes as a playmaker and is probably working his way off the roster.
PP is probably G League bound or end of bench until they figure how and if he fits.
That would seem to leave Waters. He looks like he could handle it as a playmaker but is a defensive liability, so my guess is they’ll bring someone in cheap for a year to take minutes and keep Kemba healthy for the playoff run.

PP will play ahead of Waters.

most likely if for no other reason that he'll have a 2-3 year guaranteed deal.
I have been trying to read up on the soon to be 23YO rookie. It seems some compare him Jalen Brunson who plays at Dallas. About the same size and some say the same type of game. I hope he can play at that level in the NBA. One thing for sure at his age we'll see what we got quickly.

Re: Celtics DECLINE to make Qualifying Offer to Wanny
PP3 (He'll need a different number, that belongs to DJ) is a four year college guy. As such, he may be more ready to play than the typical one and done guy. Like Grant Williams, PP3 may get rotational minutes sooner than many think.
Like Worcester wrote, PP3 will play ahead of Waters.
If Wannamaker returns, PP3 will play behind him at first. Time will tell if PP3 steps ahead of Wanny.
If Edwards returns, PP3 will play ahead of him.

Re: Celtics DECLINE to make Qualifying Offer to Wanny
I've never been a Wannamaker fan, but I find I hope for his return.
We need to do something for the front-court in free agency. Wannamaker is at least familiar with the system and could allow for front-court spending if he's signed right. He's less of a defensive liability than anyone else currently rostered as a PG. That is, again, figuring Smart as a wing with the starting rotation and limiting his on-the-ball time as a playmaking point when Kemba is off the court.
Ideally, if the team is to maintain it's top 4 spot in the league and not take a step backwards, securing a PG and a big in free agency would help. The money may not be there, however. Once again pointing to bringing Wannamaker back and pursuing a big who can board and defend in free agency.

I cant see playing Waters Wanamaker minutes, adding 23 yr old PP and dumping Wanny. Wanny is a bigger, solid, experienced backup point who defends better than both combined and helps us win now. I don’t get it.

I agree and that's exactly my point.
A quality backup is needed. Beyond that an heir apparent to Kemba would be ideal.
Waters and Pritchard are what they are; gambles and maybe future niche specialists. Those could turn out OK, but are not solutions for a second PG.
There are FA options, but Wannamaker appears the best available fit. He's in no way a future starter, but he's capable of filing the seat behind Walker and getting minutes for a season until someone can be found.
I've never been a big Wannamaker fan, but I have to say he's the best solution I can see for now.
