Jabari Parker, Celtics agree to new deal: Sources
Hello like before..yay
The Boston Celtics are bringing back veteran forward Jabari Parker on the opening night roster after all, albeit on more team-friendly terms. MassLive.com confirmed that Parker will be back with Boston on a one-year deal after clearing waivers on Tuesday. Shams Charania of the Athletic was first to report the deal.
Boston’s NBA roster is back up to 15 players with the re-signing of the 6-foot-8 forward. Parker received heavy minutes in the team’s final two preseason games amid absences in other areas of the roster.

He looked more assertive and familiar with his role in Preseason compared to last year. Welcome back.

Basically, when the team signed Parker last April after he was waived by Sacramento, it gave him a two-year, non-guaranteed deal that would cost the team only $100,000 if the option for this season were not picked up. But because it was a multi-year deal, the Celtics would take on a full veteran minimum’s cap hit, at $2.3 million for someone of seven years experience (like Parker), if Parker stuck around all year.
In a quirk of the NBA’s collective-bargaining agreement, a team is able to sign a veteran to a minimum deal for a cheaper price than he is actually paid, a way to keep veterans with higher minimum salaries in fair competition with younger players. Rather than $2.3 million, the Celtics will pay $1.6 million on Parker’s deal, a small but worthwhile savings on the luxury tax. The league eats the difference between Parker’s salary and what the Celtics will be charged with.

You’re right, no debate there.
With players like Nesmith, Romeo and Pritchard on the roster and still developing, I had said it made no sense to cut an effective scorer like Parker. What did I know? They weren’t going to let him go and tie bench scoring to three players still on training wheels.
Makes sense now. Good move.

Another thing hidden in the fine print is that his contract isn't fully guaranteed until January 15th. If a better player becomes available before then, he can be waived to open up a roster spot with no cost to the team salary.
Flexibility. They kicked the non-guaranteed can down the road a couple more months.
Now, Herman Munster / Gomez Adams becomes a little bit redundant. Brad and Company can trade him for a second round pick before the trade deadline and slip back under the luxury tax line, if they want to keep Parker instead.

Yeah, Brad is a quick, impressive study for sure. He must have been watching Danny like a hawk all those years and asking a lot of questions.
Now it's showtime...

Just curious. Where did you read that the contract for is not fully guaranteed until Jan. 6?gyso wrote:Another thing hidden in the fine print is that his contract isn't fully guaranteed until January 15th. Ktron,
I was slightly off on the date:
It’s also likely that Parker’s new contract will not guarantee until the league-wide guarantee date of January 10, 2022.

Jabari Parker signed a 1 year / $2,239,544 contract with the Boston Celtics, including an annual average salary of $2,239,544. In 2021-22, Parker will earn a base salary of $2,239,544, while carrying a cap hit of $1,669,178.
my note: This is a nonguaranteed deal. The Celtics cannot trade him until January 19, 2022. basically under this new agreement it pushes out the guaranteed date. If he had not been waived, the Celtics would have less flexibility to cut him.
