POST GAME MIN. TIMBERWOLVES - HOME
Celtics beat T'Wolves 134-112, take over top spot in East
ESPN BOSTON
BOSTON -- — Celtics coach Ime Udoka has his priorities set for the final push to the playoffs, and trying to figure out Boston's best matchup isn't among them.
"Teams manipulate where they want to play. We're not concerned about that," the rookie head coach said on Sunday after the Celtics cruised past the Minnesota Timberwolves 134-112 and climbed to the top of the Eastern Conference.
"There's too much closeness to try to manipulate things and pick an opponent," Udoka said. "Home court advantage is the main thing, and let the chops fall where they're going to fall."
Jayson Tatum scored 34 and Jaylen Brown had 31 points and 10 rebounds to lead Boston to its sixth straight win. The Celtics won for the 24th time in their last 28 games and, combined with the 76ers loss to Phoenix, took over the No. 1 spot in the East.
Boston and Miami have the same record at 47-28. The Celtics have beaten the Heattwice this season, and the teams meet again Wednesday.
"It's been a journey," Tatum said. "We had to find our identity. Lost some teammates; got some new guys. We've had to battle, but it's been fun. We had some tougher times, but we've benefited from it, and made us better."
This win came at the expense of the team that until recently had been the one of the hottest in the NBA: Minnesota is 12-5 since the All-Star break, winning 10 of 11 before back-to-back losses to Phoenix and Dallas this week.
Anthony Edwards scored 24 and Karl-Anthony Towns added 19 as the Timberwolves opened a four-game road trip with a loss — their third in four games.
The Celtics scored 13 of the first 15 points in the second quarter to open a double-digit lead they never relinquished. It was 72-49 at halftime.
By that point, the only question was whether Tatum would move into the NBA lead in scoring. He did, finishing the day with 1,923 points to pass Atlanta's Trae Young (1,915) for the top spot.
The Celtics star already has one of the top 15 scoring seasons in Celtics history and has seven games left to become the seventh player in franchise history to top 2,000 points in a season. He would join John Havlicek, Paul Pierce, Larry Bird, Isaiah Thomas, Kevin McHale, Sam Jones.
OUT
The Celtics were without forward Al Horford, who missed the game for undisclosed personal reasons and is unlikely for Monday night in Toronto. Minnesota missed Malik Beasley, who left Friday night's game with a sprained ankle.
Brown and Tatum both tested their sore knees before the game and were cleared to play. Robert Williams III, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds, limped off the court at the end of the third quarter with the Celtics up 26, and did not return.
The team said he had a left knee sprain. Udoka said Williams had "quite a bit of pain" but the team would know more after seeing a scan on Monday.
Udoka said some players might sit out against Toronto in the second game of a back-to-back on Monday night — even with the East's top four seeds within a half-game of each other. (Boston and Miami were 47-28, with Milwaukee and Philadelphia at 46-28.)
"As far as rest goes, that's the main thing," Udoka said. "We've got some guys who've got some nicks now and you have to be smart about it."
FINED
The NBA fined Timberwolves forward Taurean Prince $15,000 on Sunday for making an obscene gesture on the court in their 116-95 win over Dallas. At end of the third quarter of Friday night's game, Prince and Dallas' Luka Doncic both got technical fouls for exchanging words.
TIP-INS
Towns was removed for a substitute late in the third quarter. He walked off the court and straight to the locker room. ... It's the seventh time this year Tatum and Brown have scored at least 30 apiece.

Finally watching the game. There was a sequence in the third quarter, just before and just after the pass off the backboard for a Brown dunk, where the Celtics played defense as maniacal as I have ever seen!

It's nice to be king, even if only for a day, but RW's knee injury is extremely concerning. Brown and Tatum have had knee issues too, recently, but they looked fine tonight. If Horford is still out tomorrow night, we'll be extemely short in the bigs dept Getting everybody healthy for the playoffs is more important than seeding. I expect we will have the home court advantage in the first round anyway. This is a team that has faced adversity and overcome it. Just please, no Luke Kornet in prime time minutes. Let's go beat the flying dinosaurs on their court in the second game of a back to back.

Sorry I missed my man Hooter on the Game On, I had a personal reason too. Saw the replay when I got back. Ime made some great adjustments, limiting KAT to 7 points the rest of the game, after a 12 point first, without Big Al. KAT sure was a beast that 1st quarter, looked like he was going for a 30 point game; then he disappeared, kudos to GWill for great defense, taking a beating and not backing down.
Great game from 2 J’s, these guys are constantly making superstar plays both ends and are scoring so easily with clean looks. Seeing them running and dunking and splashing 3’s is too mush fun!!! Great game from Pritch and White both ends. Ime has figured out how to play them together and offenses are not exposing or attacking PP, that’s high level coaching. Remember the recent days when little Kemba would get posted a bunch, now with this switching D; if some team tries to do that, doesn’t matter, Pritch just goes out to cover someone at top of perimeter.
Now the big concern is RWill, we know what a game changer he is, good luck to the training staff getting him right ASAP.

I think it's about time to reward Peyton with the Eddie House, Jr. Plus Very Ferocious, Annoying Defense moniker. That kid is driving through brick walls to stay on his guy.
Now White is hitting 3's with ease!! What's this world coming to?!! Love it. ALL fingers point back to Ime. Thanks Ktron! Priceless.

Re: POST GAME MIN. TIMBERWOLVES - HOME
It's easy to make fun of them and call them the "Timberpups" but they were 43-32 coming into yesterday's game. That's a good team, and we just dismantled them with almost frighteningly clinical precision. One of the biggest single differences between the Ime Udoka Celtics of the last 2 months and the Brad Stevens Celtics (or even the Ime Udoka Celtics of the first half of the season) are that Ime's current Celtics don't have that many icy cold 1st quarters anymore. They have to spend 3/4 of the game trying to dig themselves out of the hole they put themselves into in the 1st quarter, doing so successfully sometimes and sometimes not. To paraphrase Iron Mike Tyson every team has a plan when they play the Boston Celtics until the Celtics punch them in the mouth in the first round.
They shot 53% for the game and 43.8% from 3, so it's not like they couldn't put the ball in the basket. They just don't play defense, and that's coaching as much as anything.
This is the 6th time this season the Js scored 30+ each. That puts even more distance between them and Bird and McHale's 4 times. That is remarkable.

Kinda makes you eager for next season already, doesn't it?
When Smart did this Showtime off-the-backboard pass to Jaylen the Minny announcers were upset because the Celtics were "clowning the Timberwolves". The score at that time, as you can see, was 83-63. Seems to be a little late to complain to me, they were already being clowned.
The Time Lord is going to miss some games with a sprained knee. He is critical to whatever we do. Please get well soon. He was 6-7 last night but, because he will miss some more games, he is very unlikely to get the minimum 300fgm to qualify as the NBA's top fg% player this year. He is at 271 now with only 7 games left, and that includes tonight's game which he will miss. If he only misses tonight, and I think he'll miss more than that, he'd need to have 5fgm for the remaining 6 games. He's been averaging 4.4/game for the season.

Ime Udoka said Rob Williams had "quite a bit of pain on the lateral side" of his sprained knee. Horford will be out in Toronto tomorrow night as well due to personal reasons. Udoka implies all players on the roster are allowed to play in Canada with the vaccination requirement.
From what I understand Pritchard is Jaylen's Robin, they go at each other a lot one-on-one in practice, but we all need to find someone who looks at us the way Marcus Smart looks at Payton Pritchard. Pritchard is a very competitive individual and has heard the comments about how he's too small to defend. He is one feisty little SOB now and Smart is loving it. Pritchard with 5 assists and zero turnovers.

Payton Pritchard started the year 7 for 30 from three-point range (23.3%) Sunday night he moved into the NBA's Top 10 (41.5%)..
That means Pritchard has gone 78-175, 44.5%, since. He went 3-5 from deep last night, that's 60%, and I wondered what went wrong every time he missed.
Speaking of Marcus Smart...
Jared Weiss @JaredWeissNBA

Marcus Smart is 9th in the NBA in assists per game at 7.6 since the All-Star break, right behind Nikola Jokic. He was 37th (5.3 apg) pre-break. He's also shooting 39.7% on 4.9 3PA per game in those 14 games. Celtics are 12-2 in that span.
Derrick White finally having a good scoring game. Depending upon how the J's knees are today we might need another one tonight vs Toronto.

Re: POST GAME MIN. TIMBERWOLVES - HOME
This team has been driven by their elite level defense. Jaylen spoke about that identity. They are so connected, that we see few situations where some guy does not do their job.
The Celtics make every team uncomfortable. Teams can hang for a minute but the pressure never stops. They just grind teams down to cornmeal.
They beat teams with high end centers, cracker jack point guards and high end wings. It is not a fluke. The Celtics have become a very special team.
I knew we would lay waste to the T'Wolves. Yet, I am still in awe of the magnitude of these wins. Blowing teams off the court at this rate is something that we have not seen since the most recent big 3 era.

Alright, dboss. That all begs the question about tonight's game. Vegas has TOR (-4.5)! Yikes!! That's borderline rout! I know we're going to be a little light, but we can buck up for one game. What's it gonna be?! Inquiring minds want to know!!

Nesmith +8 in 16 minutes, Theis +17 in 18 minutes. That felt good. Aaron with 4 boards, 1 dime, 1 steal and no turnovers. I suspect to see more minutes for both tonight against Raptors. Like Pop, Ime is stingy with minutes for non rotation bench players. Glad to see he's gaining confidence in Aaron.

Robert Williams suffered a torn meniscus. He is going to be out "several weeks". It took me six weeks to get sort of functional again. I am thinking its going to be at least a month for him.
