NBA All-Defense Teams Named
Marcus Smart, Robert Williams make All-NBA defensive teams
By Jon Couture Globe correspondent,Updated May 20, 2022, 8:38 p.m.
The Celtics’ Marcus Smart led all vote getters for the NBA All-Defensive Team announced Friday, with Robert Williams earning his first career spot on the second team.
Smart, the NBA defensive player of the year, received 99 of a possible 100 first-team votes and 198 points in making his third first team. That put him just ahead of Phoenix’s Mikal Bridges (95, 193), who was also second to him in the player of the year vote. Joining them on the first team were Utah’s Rudy Gobert, a six-time choice; Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Memphis’s Jaren Jackson Jr.
Williams was fourth among vote-getters on the second team. Miami’s Bam Adebayo, Milwaukee’s Jrue Holiday, Philadelphia’s Matisse Thybulle, and Golden State’s Draymond Green filled out that squad.
Twenty-four other players were chosen on at least one ballot, among them Derrick White, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Al Horford.

MY NOTE: Congrats to The Time Lord for making 2nd Team!!! As Smart found out you cannot get yourself into the conversation for DPOY until you've been on an All-Defense First Team at least once. Smart was All-Defense First Team in 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 and it wasn't until this year he won DPOY. You're on your way, Young Fella, with your first All-Defense appointment. Gobert will be 30 years old next season. It might be tough to replace him on the First Team but winning a Championship this year should take some of the sting out of that.
Not to overlooked or discounted, Derrick White got 3 Second Team votes. Not bad for a bench player. Jayson Tatum also got one First Team vote and 2 Second Team votes. That should psyche him up a bit. Jaylen Brown and Al Horford also got a First Team vote each.
A quick look by me does not see any other team that had more than 3 players getting votes (Miami with 3: Bam, Lowry, Butler). The Celtics have our entire starting unit getting votes. We also have our 6th Man, Derrick White, getting votes. That's 6 Celtics getting votes for League-wide honors. We are also the only team with more than one player on the All-Defense Teams with Smart on the First Team and RWill on the Second Team. Ime and his coaches have done a great job of getting complete buy-in on the defensive end.
