NBA Rumors: ‘Strong Voices’ Urging Nets Owner To Not Hire Ime Udoka
Some in Brooklyn don't want more drama in their lives
NESN by Jason Ounpraseuth
The Nets believe Ime Udoka can help steer the ship in the right direction for the franchise, but some in Brooklyn are seemingly tired of the drama within the organization.
The Nets reportedly are interested in bringing in the suspended Boston Celtics head coach to replace Steve Nash, who they parted ways with last Tuesday. But, NBA insider Marc Stein reported Sunday “there have been some ‘strong voices’ urging (owner) Joe Tsai to back off the Nets’ intent to hire suspended Celtics coach Ime Udoka as Steve Nash’s successor given the considerable turmoil Brooklyn has already faced this season.”
The “turmoil” for the Nets began in the 2022 offseason when Kevin Durant requested for a trade. A deal was never worked out, but the 10-time All-NBA star was keen on reuniting with Udoka, which is what made a trade to Boston viable and why the 45-year-old coach is sought after the Brooklyn job.
Things really escalated with Kyrie Irving, who was suspended for at least five games due to his initial refusal to apologize for sharing an anti-Semitic film. The seven-time All-Star apologized after the suspension and must complete a checklist required by the team to return to game action.
Udoka was issued a season-long suspension by Boston for having an inappropriate relationship with a female staffer, who he reportedly made unwanted comments toward. The Nets reportedly have vetted the head coach since he was suspended, but the organization will still have a lot to answer for if they hire Udoka.
It’s unknown how much the “strong voices” will affect Tsai’s decision to continue his pursuit of Udoka, but it shows not everyone in Brooklyn is all in on the potential move.

It is hard for me to take one side or the other although I can understand why women inside he Nets organization are not comfortable.
Despite all the reporting we really do not know all the facts involved with Ime getting suspended. If it was a clear case of sexual harassment he would have been fired. My best guess is that it would have been a difficult case to prove in court and that is one reason why he got suspended and not fired.
The Nets team really looks like an endless soap box opera. Will Tsai capitulate? The KI situation has blown up beyond repair and now with the potential Udoka hiring you have an equally disruptive situation at hand.
I think the Nets will back off. Way too much distasteful drama circulating around the Nets Franchise.
Ime will have to find some redemption over time. He will get bought out after the season and if he gets a chance to become a head coach again in the NBA his contract will have very specific language prohibiting him from engaging in any explicit or implicit relationship with any employee. It will be a 'void your contract' clause.

dboss,
I can't help myself with BKN. The Three Stooges, Keystone Cops, Beavis and Butthead...whatever you want to call them, I can't get enough all the way up to and through the dismissals, firings, etc that I've been calling for for the last 3 years. They're coming!
My latest question revolves around the at least 5-game suspension of Kryrie. Very oddly worded and I think unprecedented if I'm not mistaken. We know Kryrie isn't going to do any of his owner's requests to earn his way back on the team during this vacation. I think in this situation it was very wise, at least to let everyone know something is finally up in BKN and more than likely it will be Kryrie's contract and dismissal. BKN bought themselves some time and I have to give them respect and props for at least showing some signs of critical thinking during this completely hilarious debacle.
I know BKN would like to get something for Kryrie in a trade, but I'm sure they are finding no one is knocking on the door except the NBA graveyard teams which would suit the NBA just fine since Kryrie's beyond repair and deserves everything that is coming to him.
He's not helping the voiceless. He's not even helping his team. He's a delusional, pot-smoking fraud. All he is showing is he needs to be in business for himself where he is the top dog and doesn't have to answer to anyone but himself. The NBA, even in its distorted reality, shows that unless you are the top dog, you have to answer to someone no matter how much money you make. And even then, the owners have to answer to Adam Silver to a certain degree. And I believe the owners respect that and Silver. Then NBA can help itself by helping facilitate a severance and exit for Kryrie. Nobody wants to see him play anymore, no matter how "box office" he is. He's clearly unreliable and if he was in the real world, he would have been fired 3-4 years ago and he'd be out SDFBM. (Sorry, can't spell that one out but you can figure it out. Think well-known home carpet cleaning device, what it does and $ spent on a particularly popular alcoholic beverage.) Hell, even BKN fans aren't shelling out $ as they have the worst season ticket holder sales in the league. With a team loaded like BKN is, that should tell you EVERYTHING.
Anyway, the suspension threshold will reach its apex by the weekend and we'll see what BKN has up their sleeve or not.
What was that comment from Hobson to Arthur's hooker in Arthur? "You obviously have wonderful economy with words. I look forward to your next syllable with great eagerness!" That's Kryrie for me. People that smoke lots of weed and then talk are hilarious. I can't get enough!!

Dboss,
Ime worked for the Nets a little more than a year ago. Unless the Nets did a complete overhaul of their staff, those women are probably still employed with the Nets.
If there was a problem there I doubt if the talk about Ime returning would have gotten this far.

There's the question of 'what he did' and whether or not that was legal (always tricky in cases involving relationships gone bad... it was consensual until it wasn't), but then there's the bigger question of how the fans, the media, etc. will perceive hiring a guy who did something bad enough, even though we don't know exactly what, that he was suspended for a year after having just led his team to the NBA Finals.
Look at this week's outrage over the Bruins signing of a minor league player who had been released by another team after it came to light that he did (and was convicted of) some pretty awful things when he was 14. If there was that much of a blowup over signing a guy who wasn't even going to play for their NHL team, and whose offense was committed when he was in middle school, what's the media going to do with 'NBA team in turmoil hires sexual deviant to be their next head coach'? The Nets already have enough drama. They don't need to bring another patient into the asylum.

I expect Kyrie to make a full attempt to meet his requirements for returning to the team.
The 'at least 5 games' reflects the potential for additional action by the Nets if Kyrie does not do what he has been told that he has to do. Even the Nike situation is being called a suspension. I think that means that once the all clear signal has been given, it will be back to business as usual.
The Kyrie situation has garnered more attention and outrage than all the more outrageous things that are taking place at this very second.
In many respects Kyrie is an easy target for our collective distain. Yet it should be quite apparent that some of the absurdities coming out of his mouth are deeply embedded in the vile racist and antisemitic culture of white supremacy.

I always like a good horse race, dboss. I expect Kryrie to do absolutely nothing. He still doesn't think he did anything wrong. Plus he's being "forced" to do these things. Good luck with that amounting to a hill of beans.

I believe you intimated that “we really don’t know all the facts” then later referred to Ime as a “Sexual Deviant”. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that you were simply prognosticating what the headlines may be as opposed to how you really feel.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

db, he has already started. His apology was the first step.
Kyrie make $17-$20 million per year on endorsements (including his Nike deal) At some point I expect self-interest to kick in big time. The Nets are not going to let him play until he is in full compliance. Good citizenship from this point on to the end of the season may open up the door for him to retain his endorsements and sign a new contract with some team.

Dboss,
Kyrie is an easy target because he makes himself an easy target.
I agree that there is a vile and anti Semitic culture of white supremacy. The problem with Kyrie is that he doesn't know how to articulate his feelings and opinions because he either doesn't understand what he’s reading and seeing or he is parroting what he’s heard elsewhere. I for one can tell by his answers to questions put before him that he really doesn't have a full grasp on whats really going. Thats not to say that he’s not trying to understand but another big problem he has is that he thinks he’s smarter than the people he’s talking to. He stated to the media, “I read the Oxford dictionary”. Well those very same media types are journalist and part of being a good journalists is born out of genuine curiosity. They read too. They're college educated for the most part and are not dummies even though he’d like to make them think that they are through his litany of balderdash.
You are right, there are a lot more important things going and examining and reexamining a half psycho basketball player is not one of them. Isn’t there an election today?

I read that the 'strong voices' was coming from inside the Nets organization and I also saw another reference to the voices coming from inside the commissioners office.
It is quite possible and probably very likely that both groups are on the same page.
At this point, I do not see Tsai bucking the trend. Ime will get another spot but he probably will need to go through some sort of program that relates to what is expected of him as an employee.

Exactly. I was getting at the sensationalist writing that would likely come out around it, based on what's been written on the Bruins situation.

Another thing KI doesn't understand is with all his followers, most of them are there because he's a freak show. Not because he has an "army" of supporters. That's probably not what he's looking for in the end.
Let's see how many real supporters he has once the NBA platform and spigot are turned off and he fades off into Bolivia. (Thanks, Iron Mike!)

Just think of one thing, whatever Ime did, there are people out there who know the full story. In a world where everyone and anyone gets a lawyer and sues if they feel they are being wronged, I do not see this happening here. HE DID SOMETHING!! And we probably will never know the full scope of it all. Ime accepted the punishment and I am sure the fact that the Celtics said a month ago that they would not stand in his way if he wanted or got another job, he has not sued them, the NBA, the women, whatever. Move on from this, this was an embarrassment to the Celtics organization, he knew the rules and still did whatever he did. And, it is none of our damn business who she is. There is more to this story that you will ever know

I’ve mentioned Michael Kay before, but one more time won’t hurt….
The YES network here in NJ/NY covers the Yankees and Nets, the famous Yankee announcer Michael Kay has his own sports talk radio show, has had it for years; fairly entertaining I listen to it often when I’m driving. Michael Kay has been ripping Kyrie and the Nets and Durant for years now and this year he’s also ripping Ben Simmons, but the Kyrie stuff has gotten wacky, really bizarre. Kay let’s his 2 sidekicks, can’t recall their names at the moment and says stuff like: “this stuff is not worth talking about, I’m not gonna waste my breathe on Kyrie, he’s not worth it. Are you done already? When can we go on the next subject?” Then the other 2 guys are like “Michael sorry this is sports it’s part of our job as bad and pitiful as the story is, we have to do our jobs” Then eventually Kay adds a ripping comment on the delusion and beyond annoyance/arrogance of Kyrie, then gets mad that the other guys are still saying something on the topic…..bizarrely hilarious!!!!!

Let's see how many real supporters he has once the NBA platform and spigot are turned off and he fades off into Bolivia. (Thanks, Iron Mike!)

dbrown,
"he fades off into Bolivia. (Thanks, Iron Mike!)"
Just like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, right Mike? Not that I'd ever correct him. On the contrary, I'd probably start talking that way on purpose just to make damn sure I stay on his right side. Not that his left was too shabby. He had one, of if not the, stiffest left jabs I've ever seen.
Who doesn't love a good malapropism? Or should I say "mallow-propellor-ism"?

I think Mike said that just after Holyfield had cleaned his clock. My memory is not getting any better but it may have been the Buster Douglas fight. I'll put it under the camp that Mike's brains were a bit scrambled after being knocked out and he knew what he wanted to say but it came out backwards thanks to the AW he'd just received at his expense.

Im confused as to who said what here but one thing i know for certain is that if you're not talking about what’s trending you're going to get your ass kicked by your competitor who is talking about it.
I agree, talk hosts and others get tired of having to talk about Kyrie and obnoxious BS that really doesn't deserve the attention.
However, there is a simple rule when it comes to on air content- Ignore the fact that you're in a studio with a mic and 4 walls. Put yourself in the world of the listeners and simply give the listeners content that they want to hear.
Sorry guys, you're not paid to entertain yourself and pick topics that you want to talk about. Also, if you feel overwhelmed and tired of talking about the same thing over and over, keep it to yourself. The listener doesn't give a damn how you feel and they have choices. Simply give them what they want and they choose you. Don’t do it and they’ll find it somewhere else.
