The birth of “Instant replay”….
Many of us don’t like it and some like myself hate it but where when and who started this phenomenon?

One of the most gifted and talented TV Directors in the history of sports. His name is Tony Verna but the sports announcer who first put it in the air nationally is one of my broadcast idols- The Late Great Pat Summerall!

Here’s the story. Enjoy! https://invention.si.edu/invention-instant-replay

A couple of quick take-aways from the story...

Instant replay was quickly perfected and readily adopted. One month after the Army-Navy game, Verna’s crew used the same cueing and replay techniques at the Cotton Bowl, where #1 Texas defeated #2 Navy, 28 to 6. Announcer Pat Summerall made his national debut during that game and popularized the use of the term “instant replay.”

1. How much easier instant replay is in the digital age

2. How much things change over time; Texas #1 and Navy #2? Amazing.
