Congratulations
Jayson Tatum not only scored the most points in the NBA this season he is also the first Boston Celtic to average 30+ ppg (30.1). Not Sam Jones, not Hondo, not Larry Legend, not The Truth.
Congratulations, Jayson. Now go earn a ring like those 4 did.

Re: Congratulations
I'm a fan of JT, but averaging 30 a game is a lot easier now than when any of those guys played. Heck , two players scored 71 in the same week this season, if I'm not mistaken.

Re: Congratulations
Wilt scored with ease in that era. Had ridiculous numbers in scoring and rebounding. Do not mistake the three ball and the greater emphasis with this generation to distort the overall fact that 2-point shots and 3-point shots where the current line lies still deliver close to the same expected value...1 point.
Yes, this season with the Take Foul has allowed teams to run more and score more. It would be interesting to see how the average length of possession has changed this season. I haven't heard anything on that to my knowledge.
Teams can score more. They just choose not to. It's easier to walk the ball up and go into half court offense running the shot clock down getting a good shot. Defense also plays a roll as we are about to see in the playoffs, progressively getting better and better each round. We have yet to see a team like the 60's Celtics who chose to just run you off the court. You take more shots and still shoot the same percentage, perhaps better shots with TO's and layups, you're going to score more. That's a mathematical fact.
But Jason Tatum is on his mission. He knows he came up short in the Finals. Last season will be the last Finals he loses. Bill Russell lost one as well, remember?
It's SHOWTIME!!

Re: Congratulations
Just remember, John Havlicek scored all his points on two pointers.....no three point baskets back then, so in my book, he is really still the king

Re: Congratulations
JT’s accomplishment is well deserved. He has had a great season. As Rosalie pointed out, Hondo never had the benefit of three pointers, but it is hard to compare different eras. JT scored more points than anyone this year and he deserves all the accolades. However, the most important thing is the ring. Go get it JT!!!

Re: Congratulations
Great accomplishment for Jayson Tatum.
The fact that the 3 point shot was not available when Havlicek and Sam Jones played does not diminish Jayson's accomplishment. It was available when PP and Larry Bird were playing.
While defenses are more restricted in using their hands and forearms to check their man, back in the 60's teams did not have to defend the 3 point line.
Jayson is only 25 years old. Havlicek was 30 when he hit his high scoring make in a season 28.9 PPG.
When the Celtics win the title this year will it have less value to the Celtics legacy than the ones that were won in the past?
I think not.
Tatum may become the best scorer ever on the Celtics if he remains healthy and stays with the team . There have always been great players who wore the green and white.

Re: Congratulations
Ktron’s mind numbing numbers for number nerds ..
Like James Brown “Lets break it down”!
Michael Jordan really scored THREE THOUSAND points in a single season (1986-87)
It hadn’t been done since Wilt in 1962-63, and it hasn’t been done since
The top three totals since are:
-MJ in 1987-88 (2,868)
-Kobe in 2005-06 (2,832)
-Harden in 2018-19 (2,818)
Jayson Tatum led the NBA this season with 2,225, Joel Embiid finished second with 2,183
To reach his total of 3,041, MJ played all 82 games and averaged 37.1 PPG, the highest non-Wilt single-season scoring average in NBA history
He shot a career-best 85.7% on a career-high 11.9 FTA/G that season
It was his first of seven straight and ten total scoring titles. Ditto for All-NBA 1st Team selections
In order to break 3,000, a player would need to average:
36.6 for 82
37.1 for 81
37.5 for 80
38.0 for 79
38.5 for 78
39.0 for 77
39.5 for 76
40.0 for 75
It’s not untouchable, but it might be close

Re: Congratulations
I highly recommend all Jordan fans watch the new film - "Air." It's a great show about how and why MJ signed with Nike. So much fun.
