Mark Spears wrote the article for ESPN. Maybe he rushed because he incorrectly states that JB has been to 3 ECF. Obviously incorrect.
The Celtics have made the playoffs in each of Brown's seven NBA seasons, including the NBA Finals in 2022 and three Eastern Conference Finals trips.

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, when healthy, have basically guaranteed the Celtics a spot in the Eastern Conference finals every year since 2020. They were minutes from taking a 3-1 lead in the 2022 Finals. They are 25 and 26 years old. You pay them. End of story.

I'm told Jaylen Brown's contract has no player option and it's fully guaranteed so there are no incentives. There is a trade kicker

Can confirm Jaylen Brown has agreed to a five-year $304 million max contract. Largest in league history. Jayson Tatum is up for his max next year. #Celtics.

MY NOTE: I got a kick out of reading articles by sportswriters with more time than brains trying to think of what it could mean that he wasn't signed immediately and could that provide an opening for their team to steal him away. Damn fools, one and all, and when I say "all" I'm including their shite-for-brains readers who believed them. The funniest, as usual, were the NY sportswriters. Just like with Rondo they were offering an assortment of spare parts, plus RJ Barrett, for Jaylen.
This contract, once and for all, ends that stupid and insulting claim that the Js were "Batman and Robin". We have two Batmen, locked up for years, and neither of them are in their prime yet. Credit to Brad and Wyc to make them feel like this is and should be their home where their legacies will be made, but especial credit has to go to Danny. Brutally cold, calculating Trader Danny saw the "end-of-life" light flickering on the Pierce/KG Celtics and pulled the trigger on the trade that not only got Billy King fired but run out of the league and landed us the Js. It was Trader Danny who got us the unprotected draft picks that got us a #1 and #3 pick. It was Trader Danny who fleeced Bryan Colangelo and got his man, Jayson Tatum, and a pick that turned into Romeo. Romeo was traded, with Josh Richardson, to Pop in exchange for Derrick White, who is now our starting point guard and is an All-NBA Defense Second Teamer. Consider this: No Romeo, no Derrick. No Derrick, no Porzingis since Marcus was the price we needed to pay for that trade and we would have been even more loathe to give up Marcus if we didn't feel we had a viable replacement for him in Derrick. And it was Drafter Danny who took Jaylen Brown #3 even though everybody else was picking that all-defense, non-shooting one-and-doner out of Cal around #7. Thank you, Danny.

A couple of Jaylen Brown contract notes, per source: The trade kicker is for less than the 15 percent max. He'll be on a 6-month pay schedule rather than 12 month. (basically, more money in a shorter time).
MY NOTE: It's a corporate cash flow problem, not a salary cap one.

Per source, Jaylen Brown requested that instead of a formal press conference at Auerbach Center, his extension will be announced at his 7uice Bridge Program, a collab with MIT for minority high school students.
MY NOTE: Showing his class and down-to-earth perspective, again.

Re: Jaylen Brown signed !
I am reading that it is fully guaranteed.
I am really happy for him and the Celtics and all the fans that appreciate him on and off the court.
The amount of money is unreal but I thought the same thing years back when Joe Johnson and Mike Conley signed for an oversized bag of money.

This contract clarifies who the Celtics are and cements their pledge to build this team around the Jays.
If they decide to trade Jaylen down the road the bag of money goes with him. The Celtics are fully committed to Jaylen so I guess there will be less trade rumors and this young man can take a deep breath and go about the business of winning a title or 2.
Brad is a savvy son of a gun.
Now our attention can focus on the upcoming season and a team that has unfinished business to attend to.

As fans we get on them, but numerous ECF’s and a Final, the J’s are proven young players that you can build around and contend with. I’m expecting J’s to be even better this year at winning basketball.

Nice deal for Brown.
If I’m Tatum, I’m happy for two reasons. First, the team commitment to keeping a significant part of the roster intact. Second, if they’re paying option B a record contract and I’m option A, I know I have a record deal coming my way.

Not sure how it works, but they are home drafted/grown talents, so we do have their Bird rights. So are there exceptions with that, so we can still sign spare parts in the future we deem fit and there’s some type of cap flexibility?

Re: Jaylen Brown signed !
For all the people who can't wrap their heads around someone getting paid 60 million dollars a year to play a game, the CBA is structured such that players and owners essentially split revenues. There are 450 players in the league. Not exactly sure how many owners there are, but it is probably a lot less than 450. Thus, that 50% is divided amongst fewer owners. Additionally, revenue is not necessarily the most valuable financial component to owning an NBA team - the insane increase in franchise valuations is where the real money is, and the players don't see any of that. So, the owners are doing okay. Personally, I'm glad the people that actually produce the product and attracting viewers (players) are getting theirs. I noticed that the people posting here largely refrained from the knee-jerk incredulity at seeing Jaylen get this contract.

Re: Jaylen Brown signed !
I have no issue, obviously the money is there or he would not be getting it. Tatum is right behind. I just come from a different era, where these amounts of money are overwhelming. No one begrudges Jaylen anything. Frankly my problem is with the people who question whether the Celtics should give him this contract or not. There is no way they could let this kid walk. That would have been the stupidiest move they ever could have done. Both sides took their time and knew what they wanted Seems everyone is happy. So more power to him, his buddy is licking his chops right behind

Re: Jaylen Brown signed !
I have no problem with all 450 making big bucks. My concern is the same as expressed by Sam Mitchell and Austin Rivers - that when two or three players are making 70-80% of the payroll and the other 12-13 players have to live on the scraps, albeit millions of dollars in scraps, that can create resentments on the team. Many very good players in the NBA - say 400 or so - will be making MUCH less than the superstars. We'll see how the ramifications of this new CBA affect team chemistry and harmony, not just for the Celtics but for the NBA as a a whole. The players ratified the contract, so in theory they must be ok with it. If I were JB and JT, I'd be buying a lot of dinners for my teammates henceforth and remembering their birthdays.

That is a legitimate concern, and ultimately successful teams will have competent GMs who can make the types of decisions you are talking about.

It is a GOOD thing that 450 young men are making generational wealth by playing in the NBA for a few years. Satch Sanders started the NBA's Players Program Division and Rookie Transition Program to help the NBA's young men avoid the pitfalls of sudden wealth acquired without the wisdom of knowing how to manage it. His mentorship has made a huge difference in the lives of many, many players thereafter.

Re: Jaylen Brown signed !
The NBA will be looking to secure a new TV contract that will dwarf their current deal. That is just one of their revenue streams. I'm talking about going from $2.4 billion per year to $8 billion in TV money per year.
The Average NBA salary is around $9.6 million (2022-23) There is a wide gap between what the top players get. However, even vet minimum salaries more than pays the bills.
JB sits at the very top of the food change however his big money does not kick in until the 24-25 season. His ranking is a temporary place holder for what will come next.
Back in 2008 the NBA salary CAP was $58.6 million. For 23-24 it will be $136 Million. That number is projected to increase significantly. As it goes up, the aprons will also increase.
Larry Bird only earned $24 million in his 13 year career. https://www.spotrac.com/nba/boston-celtics/larry-bird-16240/cash-earnings/

Jaylen Brown gives heartfelt reaction to Marcus Smart trade by Celtics
Published: Jul. 26, 2023, 5:45 p.m.
By Brian Robb | brobb@masslive.com
CAMBRIDGE — Jaylen Brown is now the longest-tenured member of the Celtics after Marcus Smart was traded away last month.
That distinction along with a new five-year supermax extension will carry plenty of pressure for the All-Star guard entering next season. Amid the positive vibes of Brown’s contract extension signing at MIT on Wednesday afternoon, there was some reflection about some of the big changes awaiting Brown and the Celtics next season, including the absence of Smart on the roster.
“Definitely a lot of big changes,” Brown said. “Change is not always a bad thing. My brother and my teammate and one of my best friends is not on the team anymore. Everybody knows it. I learned so much from Marcus.
“Marcus has been somebody that’s, like, we butted heads at times, we fought, we did it all, we put each other in headlocks, etc. The journey won’t feel the same without him to be honest. But it’s a part of life, it’s a part of what you do going forward and everything he’s instilled into this organization, everything he’s instilled into this community is still going to be with us, still carried with us. So we’re going to wish him well on his new journey. Obviously the city of Boston is going to feel the loss of his impact when he’s no longer here but we’ll be able to keep moving forward.”
The Celtics were able to bring aboard Kristaps Porzingis and a pair of first-round picks in exchange for a three-team deal that sent Smart to the Grizzlies. The shift in personnel should raise the Celtics offensive upside as they look to get back towards the NBA Finals. However, Brown is focused on maintaining the identity that Smart helped create in Boston over the past nine years.
“I think what Kristaps can bring to us defensively and the additions some of our other guys can bring to us defensively,” Brown said. “I want to make sure that’s where we hang our hats this year and that starts with me, that starts with Jayson, that starts with guys, Rob. With Marcus gone, we don’t want our defensive identity to go out the door as well, so we have to really emphasize that at the start of training camp.”

Re: Jaylen Brown signed !
Just read about his press conference today.
The Boston Celtics are looking forward to his play on the court for many more years, but when all is said and done Jaylen Brown may be better known for his contributions off the court to the City of Boston.
