I've got three teams in 12 team leagues. Picked 3rd in all of them.
I've got one rule, NO LAKERS no matter what.
This is the best of the three so far

Re: Fantasy Basketball. Anyone play?
I try to do the same with all the teams and players I dont like - but if Pau Gasol is there in the 3rd round or in this case, when Carmello (a player that seems to be a punk), falls to you at the end of the second round, you have to take them.
But I refuse to take Arest or Kobe and all things being equal, anyone I dont care for personally (Vince Carter, Kenyon Martin, Nate Robinson, Kirk Heinrich, JR Smith)

Yes, all individual stats based - which is why someone like Al Jefferson (for example) is rated much higher than Kevin Garnett. You have to look for monster players (Kevin Durant is universally ranked 3rd or 4th in most fantasy lists), above even Kobe, Dirk, or Dwight Howard.
It is not at all the team that would be best together, or even win together. You just try and pile up stats in a well rounded way and you can play 10 players per night, so if you get a chance to get 3 great power forward -that is fine in fantasy....or a guy that does one thing really well (like for me, Luis Scola averages around 11 rebounds per night)
Beat's team for example, has some serious offensive fire power - looks to be lacking in assists - but has enough good bench strength to overcome the injuries that are sure to come for Baron Davis and Josh Howard. Blatche and Lou Williams are total fantasy studs that no one is sure of....so they are easy to get later in the draft. I like Beat's team a lot.
Unlike his league, mine is rotisserie - so it is all season vs every team in the league, like in the real NBA.

You're right on beat..................usually do very well with this strategy....take quality injured (not too badly) players with the goal of finishing the first few weeks last in standings and first on the waiver wire as new stars shine.
Thanks !

Re: Fantasy Basketball. Anyone play?
I'm doing a fantasy team for the first time, as an "advisor" for my son's team. His league is on Yahoo. So far, it's pretty fun, and we happen to be winning a 6-team league (head to head), though it's early. It takes a little time to figure out how it works and what strategies to use.
In our league, there are ten stat categories. The strategy we're settling on is to pick up guys who help us in targeted categories and don't worry if they are liabilities in other categories. For example, the categories we're targeting are points, 3-pointers made, offensive rebounds, total rebounds, and blocks, with assists as a secondary category. We don't worry about field goal percentage, free throw percentage, steals, or turnovers. So we have Gilbert Arenas, who doesn't shoot for percentage but scores well and throws in a few threes. We have Dwight Howard, and although he hasn't done that great so far, you know he's going to rack up rebounds and blocks and will do okay scoring-wise. We drafted and are keeping Rashard Lewis even though he's suspended because he'll help us with 3-pointers (led the league last year) and we don't want anyone to steal him. Anyway, in our league, the strategy of concentrating on certain categories and ignoring others works better than trying to do well in all categories, but it might be different in another league with different scoring methods.
Other things to consider are the team a guy is on. Theoretically, a player for an uptempo team like Phoenix could have better stats than a similar player on another team because Phoenix plays up-tempo and their games will have more shots, assists, and rebounds. I personally stayed away from Celtic players because, with their lineup, a player's stats can vary widely since different guys will carry the load on different nights. So far, Pierce and Rondo are the best performers fantasy-wise, and they probably would be a good player to have. Garnett and Ray are more typical of what I was thinking of with good games followed by low-stat games. I think Rasheed has done okay so far, but who's to say he'll keep it up for the entire year. You really want guys who pile up stats on a consistent basis.
It helps to know the league and "off the radar" players. I told my son to draft Kevin Martin of Sacramento, and he and his friends didn't know who he was. After the other night when Martin scored 48 points (including seven three-pointers) and had five rebounds, four assists, and even one block, my son knows who he is now.
You guys crack me up with the "no Laker" policy. It's just a fantasy league, for cryin' out loud. Not that there's that many Lakers I'd want, but if it made sense, I'd pick up both Paul Pierce and Pau Gasol. Heck, we even picked up Zach Randolph, and I can't stand the guy. But he scores and rebounds.
I'm new at the whole fantasy league thing myself, but it's fun so far, which is the main thing.

There is just somethings I cannot bear to do and one of them is to have a Laker on my fantisy team and actually start pulling for him.
Never had have one..........never will and I've been doing this for a few years.
I focus on the bigs a bit more for multipe stats, points, FG%, rebounds and blocks. If I can take 3 of 4 of these weekly it puts me in pretty good light to win the week.

Yeah, you sure do. This is a private league with just my son and his friends, so six teams was all they wound up with. Here's our squad with some key stats so far.
Dirk Nowitzki, 26.2 pts, 8.8 reb, 2.4 ast, 1.8 blk
Deron Williams, 23.2 pts, 5.0 reb, 8.8 ast,
Caron Butler, 14.0 pts, 7.0 reb
Dwight Howard, 19.6, 11.8 reb, 2.0 blk
Kevin Martin, 30.6 pts, 1.2 , 5.4 reb, 2.6 ast
Gilbert Arenas, 27.6 pts, 5.6 ast
Rashard Lewis
Monta Ellis, 23.0 pts, 5.0 reb, 6.7 ast
Derrick Rose, 12.2 pts, 6.0 ast
Rudy Gay, 20.2 pts, 7.8 reb
Nene Hilario, 14.6 pts, 9.6 reb, 1.0 blk
Mo Williams, 16.3 pts, 4.3 ast
Zach Randolph, 20.4 pts, 9.6 reb, 3.2 ast
Our team is averaging 20.6 points a game per player. You're not going to get stats like that in a 10- or 12-team league. One nice thing about a larger league would be finding those second tier players who outperform other guys second tier players. With a six-team league, it's all about the stars.
On our team, Butler, Rose, Nene, and Mo aren't playing up to their potential yet, plus we have Rashard in reserve, so we're sitting pretty good. The biggest surprise for me so far is Randolph with 3.2 assists per game -- I always thought of him as a black hole who never passed the ball out.
