Tyrone Shoelaces for President
Hey! Is Tommy Chong talking about basketball or bassetball?
I tried to register for Sam's Celtics forum under the name some friends call me: Spike. But noooo. My email service never got the registration confirmation, or some such thing. So, I created a new gmail account, and registered again under the name of the fictional character who sings my favorite song.
Nice site, Sam. I missed all my buddies the past few weeks. It may take a while to grow (Didn't your astrologer tell you not to start anything when Mercury is retrograde?), but eventually, the old posters will find their way here.

Re: Basketball Jones
Tyrone or Spike,
A couple of others have had difficulties in getting the registration confirmation thing to work. Although BobC was worried about it, but it turned out he was duly registered anyway. I'm going to write the "powers-that-be" about it.
In the meantime, welcome to the board. We've missed you on BDC. I look forward to your erudite posts, especially the historical insights you post. By the way, if you would like any of those to be memorialized rather than disappearing as threads fade away, we can put them on my blog. I'll be archiving my writings on the Celtics there. Just let me know if you're interested. By the way, the blog URL is: http://samsbostoncelticsfansite.blogspot.com/
Glad to have you aboard,
Sam

Spike/Tyrone,
Very nice to see you here!
I'm looking forward to seeing some of the continuing and unique insight that you provide.
I had an extremely difficult time setting up my Google account as Sam was putting this together. I would encourage you to give it a few more shots. I think I had to revisit the process of setting up the Google account three times before I could be NYCelt. I'm happy to see you here either way, but it would be great to preserve "Big Spike".
Regards

Thanks. I've been on your blog a number of times. Some of those clickthrus were me trying to increase your income (LOL). I've been reworking some of those old posts on BDC, fleshing them out. They are not posted, but the old board has a blog function which I found to be a good place to put my works in progress.
Also, I'm currently suffering from a lack of source material (and a lack of knowledge). Do I remember correctly that you found your boxes of Celtic books? If so, do you have any books on basketball history that you wouldn't mind lending for a short time? In particular, I've been working on a piece about how Bill Russell changed the game, that I'm now calling 'how Bll Russell made the game.' The revelations in Red and Me seem to prove that to be true. It's just so far beyond my area of expertise that I think I need some help.

Good to be aboard.

Re: Basketball Jones
Spike,
I found one two boxes of Celtics books. Then I had to store them last summer when we moved out to rent out our house. When I returned, I found one box. Not the best books either. I know the other one's out there (in one of four garages packed floor-to-ceiling. When I disengage myself from this site for more than a few minutes, I'll look for it again. I miss my books!!!
The amount of time expenditure so far is about as I had expected. It's averaging about 12-15 hours a day, between moderating, troubleshooting, thinking up idea to keep the site interesting, and (of course) trying to put out some worthwhile posts. I've seen Dslack saying that administering this kind of site shouldn't take time from a person's occupation, and I have no idea what kind of personal commitment he has.
But he's an academician and I'm a businessperson. Nothing wrong with either. I've been heavily involved in both areas. I've found that achieving quality usually involved a much longer time period (and spreading out of hours) in academia than in deadline-sensitive business activities. The only approach I feel comfortable with is to work my butt off to produce results as substantive as possible within as short a time as possible. Perhaps that's a difference between my good friend Dslack (no sarcasm, I've always considered him a good friend) and myself. We'll just have to see which approach more consistently produces a compelling forum "product"—and which ultimately represents better value received in the eyes of the users.
I do believe there are niches for both forums. A couple of days ago, before I left BDC, someone posted over there, leaving his email address and looking for the URL for Dslack's forum. I lost no time in emailing it to him.
Our ultimate objective is identical—to meet needs. I think we differ on what is required to do that. Nick Faldo is now saying that I'm "unethically" after "profits." (Snicker) I'm simply hoping to recover a portion of the revenue that will be forfeited in my intensive approach to meeting those needs.
We'll see how it goes. So far, I'm ecstatic about the quality represented by the posts on this board AND with the posting atmosphere as well.
I'll look for those books. I'm going out for a few hours right now but will be back on the forum later in the afternoon.
Best,
Sam
