Celtics Close to Signing Center(s)

At today's (Monday's) morning shootaround, Doc said the team was "close on signing a couple of centers but that nothing was imminent." The report gave no hint of who the two might be. It also failed to clarify whether Doc meant both might be signed or one of the two might be signed. If they sign two centers, the Celtics could become Buyout Central.

What exactly is "close" but not "imminent"? Did the exchange go something like this:

Doc: The situation is that we're close on signing a couple of centers but nothing is imminent.

Q: So how soon do you expect to sign a center?

Doc: Soon.

Q: How soon? Today?

Doc: No, not that soon. But soon.

Q: So later this week?

Doc: We don't know for sure, but it should be real soon now. We're close. But nothing is imminent.

Q: [Inaudible]

I don't know exactly what the conversation was. However, because I tend to be extremely attuned to the importance of language shadings in such matters (especially in matters involving the press) , I simply quoted it as written.

I have to assume that Doc felt the word "imminent" represented a smaller and more specifically designated unit of time (as in "any minute now")than the word "close." But I could be wrong.

AFAIK "soon" should be no later than March 23: can participate in playoffs. I don't see any other reason to get a rental center.

Actually, the question you posed was precisely my first reaction to the article. It's always interesting how the meaning of a quote can be shaded by media types and their reporting integrity.

True, but you could see it coming. Makes sense for the Heat to have a big who's not afraid to grind it out when you can envision a tough series with Chicago as a real possibility. From Ronny's standpoint it's the best possibility to get another ring.
