Celtics, MCCA will discuss application for All-Star Game
by Gary Washburn Globe Staff
Next year will be the 50th anniversary since the city of Boston hosted an NBA All-Star Game and there has been very little movement over the past several years on that front. With a shortage of NBA cities applying for All-Star Games because of the cost, Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck told the Globe the club is considering filing an application.
Grousbeck said he had a conversation with Jim Rooney, the executive director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority about taking steps in the process.
"I spoke to Jim Rooney casually the other day about it," Grousbeck said. "And we've agreed it's something worth looking at."
There is a concern the NBA would not award an All-Star Game to a cold-weather city. The past five games have been in Phoenix, Dallas, Los Angeles, Orlando and Houston while the 2014 game will be in New Orleans. The NBA has not held an All-Star Game in the northeast region since Philadelphia in 2002.
Deputy commissioner Adam Silver confirmed at February's All-Star Weekend in Houston that either Brooklyn (Barclays Center) or New York City (Madison Square Garden) will host the 2015 game.
