Celtics-Nets Trade Trumps NBA Draft

Proposed Celtics-Nets Trade

Nets get:

Terry

Pierce

Garnett

Celtics get:

Humphries

Joseph

Bogans

Wallace

Brooks

First-round picks in 2014, 2016, 2018

Kevin Garnett has agreed to waive his no-trade clause, clinching an agreement on a trade that will land Paul Pierce, Garnett and Jason Terry with the Brooklyn Nets, sources close to the process told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard on Thursday night.

Garnett waiving the no-trade clause was the last step to sealing the deal, sources said.

No trade between the teams can officially be consummated until July 10 -- when a league-wide moratorium on signings and trades is lifted after free agency begins Monday -- but the teams made fast progress on finalizing the trade parameters.

Brooklyn has agreed to send three first-round picks (2014, '16 and '18) along with Kris Humphries' expiring contract, Gerald Wallace, Kris Joseph, MarShon Brooks and a sign-and-traded Keith Bogans to the Celtics for Pierce, Garnett and Terry, a source told Broussard.

It was initially reported that Brooklyn had included Tornike Shengelia and Reggie Evans, but the source said that the Joseph and Brooks were in the final tally.

By agreeing to add Terry to the trade, sources said, Brooklyn alleviated some of Boston's concerns about absorbing the remaining three years and $30 million on Wallace's contract.

Because Pierce is making nearly $17 million this season, Brooklyn needs the deal to wait until after the start of free agency and the lifting of the moratorium on July 10, since the $15.3 million team option the Celtics had on their longtime captain is used in the trade.

In 2014, Boston gets either Brooklyn's pick or Atlanta's pick, whichever is worse. And in 2017, Boston has the right to swap picks with Brooklyn, a source said.

Nets general manager Billy King laughed when asked about the agreement in principle, but when asked if he could say anything about it, King replied, "Nothing."

King repeatedly said he would not comment on the agreement.

"Guys, honestly, I can't go any further than this. Honestly, you can ask all the questions. Honestly, I can't. At the time that it's appropriate, I will address it if possible, but at this time, I can't," King said.

Sources told ESPN.com the Nets hatched the idea of trying to acquire both Boston stalwarts in the same deal because Pierce's inclusion was seen as the surest way to persuade Garnett to waive his no-trade clause.

The addition of Garnett and Pierce to the trio of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson and Brook Lopez would appear to give the Nets one of the most formidable rosters in the NBA under rookie coach Jason Kidd.

Earlier this offseason, Boston denied the Nets permission to contact then-head coach Doc Rivers, who eventually left to coach the Los Angeles Clippers.

"I knew it come coming," said Rivers of the blockbuster trade involving Garnett and Pierce. "Danny and I had talked about that over the last three or four weeks. I knew all this was going to happen. It's obviously sad whenever an era or time ends and it has now. That's the sad part."

The Celtics now are a team in transition looking to accelerate the rebuilding process by chasing draft picks and creating cap space.

After news of the proposed trade, Sportsbook.com dropped the Nets' odds to win the NBA title from 50-1 to 25-1.

Information from ESPN.com's Marc Stein, ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard, ESPN.com's Darren Rovell, ESPNLosAngeles.com's Arash Markazi and ESPNNewYork.com regular contributor Mike Mazzeo was used in this report.

I like the trade especially Brooks and Joseph. Brooks can be a great player if given the chance..........and I liked Joseph...he justed needed time to develop.

I think Danny will package Humphries , Wallace or both in other trades during the summer to land other free agents.

Humphries has an expiring contract and so is a one-year hit on the roster, which means he has value in clearing future cap space. That also makes him attractive trade bait to another team that wants to clear its cap space, so if some good, young talent becomes available in a trade, see ya.

Wallace is decent player but a payroll drain for three more long years. If Ainge can move him, please do. Otherwise, get the most out of him while he's here.

I didn't initially hear that they got Brooks and Joseph. Joseph was well-liked around here during his brief stay, and Brooks has shown a lot of potential. These guys make it a really sweet deal for Boston.

outside,

I'm hearing conflicting reports. Some say it was Brooks, some say it was a sign-and-trade with Bogans.

Well, shoot. Brooks is FAR more appealing player than Bogans in my book.

We now own 9 first round picks over the next 5 years, including two in next year's draft.

Danny is NOT going to draft 9 new players and rebuild like that. My gut tells me that at least half of these are going to be used by Trader Danny to bring in proven, veteran talent.

What kind of player do you think we could pick up with a player, maybe two and one or both of our 1st rounders next year? Almost anybody we want.

THE TRADE - CELTICS GET - Humphries, Joseph, Bogans, Wallace, Brooks 3 - 1ST Rounders Empty Re: THE TRADE - CELTICS GET - Humphries, Joseph, Bogans, Wallace, Brooks 3 - 1ST Rounders

Brooks is the best part of that trade, along with the picks.  Good scorer, average defender, adds at least an average size guard to our otherwise small backcourt of Rondo and Bradley.  Brooks and Bradley in some combination at 2-guard is a nice improvement and with Rondo gives us a strong backcourt with what could be three long-term mainstays.

The other players appear mostly packaged to make numbers work, and I would expect to see most depart after a brief stay if not immediately.  Humphries may be here for a season and I don't know what we do with Bogans.  KrisJo is a great kid and was a popular player at SU but probably won't stick around. Wallace's contract is the one negative in the deal, but we needed to take it on to get this done.

I think Bob is looking at all the picks we're gathering in the way we're likely to use them; trading chips.  We may keep a couple, the non-guaranteed ones have less value and are likely to be poorer picks.  If we do retain a 2014 pick, it looks like it will be the strongest draft in over a decade.

Some promising stuff here.

POSTED JUNE 28, 2013
Grading Celtics-Nets deal for Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce

BY BEN GOLLIVER

The Celtics and Nets agreed to swing a blockbuster deal on draft night that will go official once free agency opens in July. How did each side fare?

Boston Celtics — Grade: B

Outgoing: Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Jason Terry

Incoming: Gerald Wallace, Kris Humphries, Reggie Evans, Keith Bogans, three first-round picks, player(s) to be named later (UPDATE: MarShon Brooks is reportedly headed to Boston, while Evans is not part of the deal.)

There’s so much going on with this trade from Boston’s side. This is one of the tougher moves to evaluate in recent years because of all those external factors.

Quickly: It’s an excellent send-off to two valued players, Pierce and Garnett, who get to continue playing meaningful basketball at a point in their career where that’s all that matters. It’s a major symbolic shift in approach for a team that has hung on, and hung on, and hung on for two or three years longer than some expected. It’s a gut punch to fans so soon after Doc Rivers’ own emotional departure.

Touchy-feely issues aside, Danny Ainge made a bold play for pure assets in the form of the three first-round picks. The league’s rules preventing consecutive draft picks from getting traded is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the more picks over the next one-to-two years the better for the Celtics, who will likely be really, really bad next season. On the other, stretching out the time frame on the pick transfers opens up the possibility that Brooklyn bottoms out — or at least takes a step back — at some point, making the picks more valuable.

Boil this whole monster trade down and it essentially amounts to Boston’s paying the difference between Wallace’s future salary ($30 million) minus Terry’s future salary ($10 million) for the three first-round picks. That’s pretty expensive, even if we give Ainge some credit for getting Pierce out of town without buying him out or using the amnesty clause. That difference in cost prevents this deal from being a total home run, but Ainge can fix that if he can find a way to flip Humphries’ expiring deal or Wallace — who doesn’t make much sense on a bad, rebuilding roster — at some point (any point!) down the road.

The last key, hidden benefit to mention here is a counterintuitive one: This trade is an efficient way to make Boston really bad next season. Team executives talk all of the time about avoiding the treadmill of mediocrity, and that’s exactly where the Celtics were headed in 2013-14 if they brought back Pierce and Garnett and waited patiently on Rajon Rondo, who is recovering from knee surgery. Much like in 2007, when Boston won just 24 games before the Greg Oden/Kevin Durant draft, this is a good time to be bad. Encouraging Rondo to take his sweet time rehabbing will likely be enough to make a bottom-six record a reality. Should that happen, the Celtics would be in a prime spot to add a franchise-changing building block in what is expected to be a strong 2014 draft. And if they somehow land Andrew Wiggins? It would be worth paying Wallace three times what he’s set to make.

It’s worth noting that this is a “B” with a big TBD attached to it, pending the possibility of a future Wallace deal and/or striking gold in the 2014 lottery.

bob
MY NOTE:  They gave the Nets a B+ for their side of the deal, but I don't give a shit about the Nets or how well they did.  I care for Pierce and KG, but my blood's green.  I wish them well, as long as they stay out of Da Gahden. I'll see them again in two or three years when they come back to hoist their numbers to the rafters.

ESPN is now reporting the deal is:

KG, Pierce and JET to Brooklyn
Bogans, Joseph, Humphries, Marshon Brooks and Gerald Wallace + the 3 picks to Boston.

No Shengelia, no Evans.

This is morphing hourly.
