Catching up
I've looked in a little here and there but haven't had time to add a lot. 2-3 feet of the white stuff does that to you plus a couple of minor breaks of my new blower but finally all is cleaned out, ready for the next bout tonight and tomorrow. My mom spent the last 2 days with us and just got her driveway and steps cleaned out and took her home this PM. Lost power all day Wed, so had to get mom and hook up the generator. Such is life on the Tug Hill. We are lucky some areas nearby got a lot more. (5+ feet)
C's are winning. whch is good, 9 straight I think and with Orlando laying an egg, we have the best record in the east. Rondo appears to be emerging to take over as the floor leader, next to PP of course.
Marcus's team is 2-1 he's playing but not starting. 11 total points in 3 games and 9 rebounds. When he is out there he does well. He's disappointed he's not starting but is doing all he can. Last game we had a big third quarter, went from 5 down to 7 up and ended up winning 49-35. Only allowed 13 points in the second half. Marcus got 3 points all from the line as the other team was fouling late. He was to have had a game yesterday but was pushed back to today and is cancelled again. He's had 3 straight snow days (no school). The last practice he missed his first 2 free throw then made the next 23. Coach told him to keep going and he made another 15 before missing.....38 in a row.
Step dad is in a nursing/rehab home (in Carthage, which is much closer and more people are able to visit him) and seems to be slowly getting better but it is going to be a long struggle for him.
Work has been extremely busy too. Hopefully things will get back to a bit more normal soon. I have missed sharing things with all of you!!
(I'm ready for baseball season, or at least baseball weather!!)
Season's Greetings to all and lets not forget those in need! (not me)

Re: Catching up
beat,
Glad to see that all is well, albeit hectic.
I have had a holiday tradition, going back 30+ years, that I'm about to get to any day now.
What I do is draw up a christmas card list, which grows every year as I add friends. I go to a store and pick out a nice card. I then add the cost of the card and the cost of first class postage together, multiply by the number of names on the list and that's how much I donate to charity. Doesn't cost me any more than I would have spent if I had sent the cards, I don't have to sign my name a bazillion times, nor do I have to try to keep coming up with unique little things to say to each individual addressee. The only one who gets hurt is Hallmark, and I try to get over that.
My friends all know this about me, so they don't expect a card from me. I also encourage them to try it, but old habits die hard for some of them. What's Christmas without writer's cramp?
I also drop off a toy at the local USMC recruiting station for Toys for Tots. Not a big sacrifice for me, since I have none of my own that I have to shell out $ for.

beat,
Let's see, you're to the east of me by about 70 miles and have been hammered by snow. 70 miles west Buffalo is under a snow emergency right now. It's good to be where I'm sitting after all!
Glad to hear all is well. Best to you and the family as well.

Little things do add up. Even today had to run to the hardware store to pick up some stuff for the blower repair. On the way home a guy was stuck in his yard trying to plow snow with an ATV. He just couldn't get out of a realatively small rut and just needed a little push. Marcus and I pushed him out quite easily, and we were back on our way and he was back to plowing. No big deal really................but if everyone took a little time to help a little financially or physically when they can, well things would go so much better for all.
Usually we use a debit card but when going to the grocery store but this time of year I try to use cash so I can drop the change or a couple of bucks in the red kettle outside.

My dad and his brother (my uncle) used to exchange $1,000 checks at Christmas time. Big spenders.
Beat, you're doing a great job of maintaining stability in the midst of chaos. All the best to you and your family throughout the holiday season. We're all with you.

Just go to ANY weather website that has a radar feature and go to the area east of lake ontario. Right now the lake effect band is south of us a few miles.
Here is one I use
http://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?zoommode=zoom&num=5&delay=15&rbscale=0.2847826086956522&scale=1.000&noclutter=0&ID=TYX&type=N0R&lat=43.98443985&lon=-75.90054321&label=Watertown, NY&showstorms=0&map.x=348.5&map.y=252.5¢erx=400¢ery=240&lightning=0&smooth=0&showlabels=1&rainsnow=0
If you look to the middle of the radar screen you will see a white + sign, that is the location of this radar, if you go directly east about 1/2 inch on the screen that is about where I am located. The black line is the border between Lewis County where the radar is located and Jefferson County which borders the Lake.

Sam and all
Right now about 3PM if I look to the north I see a bright blue sky.
If I do an about face and look south and its a black/blue mess.
Such is a nature of lake effect snow. Bare roads for miles then a wall of white and you can't see hardly anything.

Hi Beat,
38 in a row! Now I'm finally starting to get over the fact he beat me in the shooting contest a couple of years ago.
Hope all is as well as can be.

Re: Catching up
beat,
I took a look at that weather map.
The wild thing is that the weather you're getting is coming from the lake effect just above us. I'm sitting here on the southern shore and it's freezing cold, but blue skies. It's something about the weather in this part of the state that's always been wild. South-west of us they're getting the Lake Erie blast. I hear parts of the thruway are closed.
Everyone around here who likes to x-country ski or snowmobile heads out your way. From your pictures it looks like there's a good start to the snow base for the winter sportsmen.
Regards

Well actually some of us are not with you. We have enough sense to live in places way, way south of the you's guys (a Yankeeism for sure).... where it is reasonably warm, sunny and no snow today....
but we are with you certainly in spirit.... if that helps!
(Could someone define "with" sometime.)
I'm still busy working on defining "elite." I getting closer but am not quite there yet.... where ever "there" is!
BTW... stay warm!

Not sure exactly where you reside but I'll take the occasional snow storm over tornadoes, hurricane, floods, earthquakes anyday.
The snow does melt in time. And your house is usually OK.
As to your word issue.
Try using it in a sentence like the word, falseify.
If I put a book on my head it falsify move.
Or the word, facinate.
My jacket has nine buttons, but I only facinate.
Elite. try this.
I don't know about how your kids eat but Marcus, elite anything he can get his hands on.

Re: Catching up
Wouldn't "warm" be a relative thing depending on where one lives? Would you please define "warm?"
And it's spelled "youse" to differentiate it clearly from a flock of female sheep.

Warm: not frozen; somewhat greater than 32 degrees Fahrenheit while comfortably less than 212 degrees Fahrenheit; just right; downright balmy; Used in a sentence, "OMG, the first day of spring, I wearing my short pants but..... my legs are so pale, I look like death warmed over!)
The dang spellchecker promised on the intro page at Sams Club has never, ever worked, overlooking "you's" and making me look stupid. Otherwise I would have spelled it close enough so that ewes would not have been drawn into this erudite(?) discussion.
For 20 small bills, we deserve at least a working spell checker.
Since we are now approaching "too big to fail," how about some TARP money to spiffy things up and get rid of the typos.

Re: Catching up
GC,
One alternative would be to consult the "Welcome! & Help" forum that we painstakingly provided. One of the items in the "Helpful Hints on Using this Site" thread explains how to activate a spell-checking feature that will catch incorrect spelling although it is not also a dictionary. It has worked for most of us.
By the way, the word "you's" is not spelled incorrectly. It's a little-used contraction of the words "you is," as in the
sentence, "A nice thank you's always in order when the administrators of a message board provide a given feature." It has nothing to do with the slang word "youse." Thus it's not a spelling error but simply an error in word usage; and we don't have a feature to catch that.

Out here on the left coast we've been complaining cause it's dropping down into the mid-20's at night and only up into the low 40's in the daytime....Then I see what you folks are going through and I become silently appreciative of our weather.... Hopefully, tomorrow nights game will make you happy, if not warm. LACELT

Been there done that... helpful hints weren't very helpful in activating the elusive spell checker feature. I may be asking for a partial refund BTW.
I agree that "you's" is a little used contraction... a very little used contraction... as in exclusive to this thread and this thread alone in the entire recorded annals of carbon based life on planet Earth and very possibly Mars/Venus.
Since federal stimulus money can be used on "shovel ready" projects, this thread and its contents certainly qualify as "shovel ready."
No question. We need only apply.
