Rondo Assigned To D-League

If you were wondering if Rondo is getting close, I'd say this is pretty solid evidence it's all about knocking off his rust and getting his timing and wind back.

The Boston Celtics have assigned point guard Rajon Rondo to the Maine Red Claws of the D-League.

Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge noted that Rondo will participate in a workout with the Claws on Wednesday, then immediately be recalled, likely in preparation for his return to game action on Friday against the Los Angeles Lakers.

“Rajon is progressing terrifically in his rehab and this is the next step,” said Ainge. “This is a brief assignment so that Rajon can participate in a workout this afternoon with the Red Claws and he will be called back up to the Celtics upon the conclusion of the workout.”

Rondo hinted via Twitter this week that he would make a return on Friday and was scheduled to go through a set of physical tests Wednesday aimed at ensuring he was physically ready to return to game action.

Rondo tore his ACL in late January last year and underwent surgery in mid-February.

UPDATE: That was fast! About two hours after announcing he'd work out with the Red Claws, Boston's front office announced that Rajon Rondo had been called back up to the Celtics.
