Wonder how many young fans of the C's could give a rats ass about ping pong balls, the lottery and just want to see them win?

Matty,
That really puts the whole tanking thing into perspective. How could you go to the game, watch your favorite team play, and not root for them to win? From a visceral standpoint, from down in your gut, when faced with the team playing in front of you and the whole arena experience, you have to want them to win.

Have a super time, Matty! May the only balls associated with tonight's game (or any of those for the rest of the season) be the brass ones of the Celtics.

Sometimes it just might be prudent to take off your fan hat and put on a general managers cap, and take one for the future.

Back when Marcus was in Little League... a situation arose in our last regular season game if we lost we would get to play a team in the playoffs that we could beat at least a better opportunity of doing that, than playing that other team should we win.
How do you tell your son to go out there and loose? We won that game 2-1 in the bottom of the 6th, Marcus pitched a gem and scored the winning run. The excitement of those kids faces, the smiles.......and me knowing what I knew looking ahead. Still would not have done anything different.
How can any 8,9, 10 year old kid wearing a Celtics jersey go there this evening and not root for this team? Imagine the look on their face if some "fan" sitting next to them is actively rooting for the C's to loose?
Maybe they don't understand the lottery?
Maybe some are forgetting what it is like to be a fan?
I'll worry about the lottery and the draft when those days come.

I will admit a loss hurts a little less knowing what it could mean this summer, but I will still never hope to see my team lose, not on t.v, not in person...
I'm just hoping my being there doesn't jinx the team, going back to the bird years, I've never seen Boston win the game when I was there... Tonight I hope that changes!!
I will see ya'll tonight on the game on! Thread!!

I've got about 64 years of rooting for the Celts under my belt. This year I've taken my fan hat off and I'm playing general manger. Tough job choosing the future over the present. It sure is difficult to break old habits. I bet Ainge would agree with that.

Seeing the disappointment on the players' faces after a tough loss says all that needs to be said.

Remember the early lottery days when all teams that did not make the playoffs had an equal chance at the top pick? They had the big hopper glass with all the envelopes containing each teams logo and one by one they were selected till they go to the final 2. I remember the Patrick Ewing sweepstakes and the way Dave D ( I'll butcher the spelling) acted when as one of the final 2 left, the knicks card was the last one pulled out and thus had the first pick.
Perhaps that was not a bad way to do it. Everyone with an equal chance.
Certainly would eliminate the need or desire to "tank" as your chances would remain unchanged.

The desire to level the playing field through the draft has sure created other problems. Perhaps, like you point out, it would be better to revert back to the early days of the lottery. I was wondering about the effect of placing the 1st 5 picks in an open drawing for all 30 teams and the remaining 1st round picks being selected in reverse order of finish. That would at least eliminate tanking in order to grab one of the five top picks. Of course this number could be flexible.
