The 2014-2015 Boston Celtics Roster Empty The 2014-2015 Boston Celtics Roster

Post by bobheckler Wed Jul 09, 2014 12:33 pm

This will be a running thread that will be updated as deals happen and players are moved.  Players that are on non-guaranteed contracts are in bold.  Players who can play multiple positions are regular in their likely position and in (parentheses) in their secondary position.  This does not include summer league players like Mike Moser, who is having a very good summer league, but might be the next Dionte Christmas.

5 - Zeller, Anthony, Vitor, Iverson, (Kelly)
4 - Bass, Sully, Kelly
3 - Green, Wallace, Young, Johnson
2 - Bradley, Smart, Thornton, Babb
1 - Rondo, Pressey, (Smart - I think he'll begin at 2 and grow into 1)

How about points per game?
Here are my projections over 82 games with last year's averages in parentheses

Sully- 12 (13.3)
Bass-   8 (11.1)
Kelly- 15  (8.7)
Zeller-  8
Fav-     2  (4.4)
Joel-     0

Green-15  (16.9)
Wallace-4 (5.1)
Young-  2

Bradley- 15  (14.9)
Thornton- 4
Smart- 7

Rondo- 14  (11.7)
Pressey- 4   (2.8 )

Total: 110 points per game. Last year we scored 96.2 PPG.
Does anyone else think we can score 45 points per night combined out of the 4 and 5 spots?
21 points out of our small forwards night after night?
26 points a night from our shooting guards?
18 points a night from our point guards?

Any contention with the points allotted? Anyways, that's the production I would like to see. I know, wishful thinking. With production like that and some fierce D we could have a 60-22 record!

kdp,

Thanks, I forgot about him. Out of sight, out of mind. I updated the roster above.

Worcester,

You're on the right track, but I'd make a few adjustments, especially considering the Clippers led the league last year at 107.9 points per game and the Celtics were 26th.

Bass -- I like him a lot, but with Zeller arriving and Sully moving over to the 4, I think he's odd man out. He's a trade waiting to happen.
Kelly -- he'll improve, but 15 per game, every game?
Fav -- you forgot to amortize those 2 points per game in 10 games over the 82-game season. Just put him down as zero, because that's what you can depend on
Young -- not sure how much time he'll spend up on the big league roster
Thornton -- I'd say you're underestimating here. He's the 3-pt shooter that Stevens seems to have been wanting more of
Bradley -- average his 14.9 over 82 games and you get 10.9. Durability hasn't been his strong suit
Pressey -- with Rondo, Bradley, Smart, and Thornton, where does he get his minutes? Only if the others are hurt

Does anyone else think we can score 45 points per night combined out of the 4 and 5 spots? No. Not close. I think 30 is more reasonable.
21 points out of our small forwards night after night? Yes.
26 points a night from our shooting guards? 18 points a night from our point guards? I think a combined 45 from the guards is reasonable.

My revised numbers add up to 96, basically the same as last season, but I think they'll move up to around 100, which would put them middle of the pack in the league, so add a couple of points here, a couple of points there.

Nothing wrong with being optimistic, but I wouldn't quite go as far as a Larry Bird-esque turnaround in one season. .500 seems like a resonable goal. They had 14 games last year that they lost by five or fewer points:

34 games that they lost by nine or fewer points:

A few points better on offense + a few points better on defense = significant improvement in the standings, especially in the East.

kdp and worcester,

Wow.  So neither of you have Joel Anthony getting off the bench.

I should make book on that..

Bob, Joel may get off the bench, but I'd bet over 82 games he averages less than 1 point per game.

Outside, I'd like to see Kelly have a breakout year. If he plays some time at the 5 along with the 4 he may get enough minutes to average 15 per game. What a difference that would make. If we get to 100 ppg with better D - especially having some help at center - we could start showing some glimmers. Then, if prior to 2015-16 when we can drop a bunch of salaries (when does Wallace go?), we would have some real opportunities to enhance the roster.

If the Celtics do need someone to play center and it comes down to Joel Anthony... then I guess Stevens will only field 4 players at a time.

I thought it was strange how last year the Celtics had no center and Anthony was still dead-bolted to the bench.

Anthony came late, is an older player (31) so Stevens didn't know him from his college days and we were already done year-wise. Ergo, he didn't play. That was then, this is now. I'll bet, barring future trades, he gets minutes this year. Zeller will get some an Anthony will get some. Vitor will be slow coming off the bench due to his surgery and Iverson (if he makes the team) will get minimal.

Anthony knows how to direct an NBA defense. Zeller's young, Vitor doesn't have much experience with NBA defenses and Iverson's raw. Almost by default, I'm betting he gets minutes.

I put that zero for Joel just for you Bob!

my crystal ball says he MIGHT get a whopping 150 minutes the whole year.

and IF he gets that many someone must have some injuries.

the sooner Joel is gone the better the Celtics will be, IMO.

I would say the same thing about Wallace, due to his outrageous contract.

should we sticky this thread and un-sticky the draft and combine threads?
