In November, it was Dennis Johnson getting ejected for fighting Bill Laimbeer; last night it was Robert Parish (Chief) swinging at Laimbeer.
"We don't like Laimbeer too good," said Larry Bird.
"I don't care whether they like me or not," snapped Laimbeer. "As long as people in Detroit like me."
Isiah Thomas, who picked up a technical for throwing the basketball at Parish after Parish took a swing at Laimbeer, said, "I regret throwing the ball at Robert Parish. He's one of the most respected players in the league. But he went after one of my teammates, and my instinct took over and I threw the ball at him."
Celtics coach K.C. Jones went after official Jess Thompson (who made the costly offensive foul call on Kevin McHale with four seconds left) after the game and said, "What the bleep are you doing in this league?" Official Jess Kersey asked Piston officials to keep a tape of the postgame activities for league perusal.
Despite Parish's ejection and McHale's ill-timed foul, let the record show that the Celts blew a nine-point third-quarter lead and shot 4 for 20 in the final period . . . Boston has been outrebounded by 40 caroms in its last three games.
The Pistons needed a win badly. Piston coach Chuck Daly sounds like he's ready for the ax to fall.
"Personally, I'm trying to remain as calm as possible, but I understand the circumstances," Daly said before the victory. "I'm not naive. I've been here before . . . I'm responsible for getting this team to win, and when you're in this league as a coach, you live on the edge."
Going into last night's game, the Pistons had lost six straight, 10 of 11, 13 of 16 and were four games under .500, tied for fourth place in the Central Division.
"I don't know if it can be remedied," admitted Daly.
The latest count in the All-Star voting was disclosed yesterday. Piston forward Kelly Tripucka still ranks second among Eastern Conference forwards, trailing Bird. Julius Erving is a close third, and Kevin McHale has risen to fourth. Tripucka doesn't seem embarrassed by the fan support. "If it happens, it happens; if it doesn't, it doesn't," said the Notre Dame grad. "I'm not too worried about it. We got more important things to worry about on this team."
