Smart move.

This could kill the Love deal.

It gives Wiggins the chance to cash in on the new CBA, which is supposed to be richer because of new, higher TV money.  It also means that LBJ and Wiggins will be free agents at the same time.

Interesting.

The Celtics normally pay their rookies 120% of the established rookie scale, but they sign them for the max years.  This is what they did with Smart and Young.  Young doesn't have the leverage Smart does, so he takes what he gets, but Smart is locked up for years.  I think that will pay off big down the road as salary caps go up with the increased league TV  revenues.

Will MN role the dice on a player for just 2 years?

This could give them pause.

I am pretty sure that all 1st round contracts are guaranteed for the first two years. Years 3 and 4 are team options and year 5 is a qualifying offer.

Wiggins couldn't just sign for a max of 2 years.

That puts this one to bed.

If Love and his 15 mil contract goes to Cleveland then Cleveland has to ship about 12 mil to Minny. As an unsigned draft pick I think that Wiggins would have had zero contract value. By signing him to a contract they gain about 5 mil and only need players with about 9 mil in contracts to complete the deal. That's if my reasoning is factual.

swish,

I think you're right but if Flip is trying to get MORE out of Cleveland then having them wait to sign him and trade his rights instead would enable them to sweeten the pot with another player whose salary makes it work.

Trying to stay on top these twist and turns sort of reminds me of the years that I spent trying to solve the old " COLUMBO " drama's. I've got to start wearing my old trench coat.

As Colombo would say, "Oh, by the way, just one more thing, sir."
