Oh Good. We really need a longer season.
From Hoops Hype (well actually from Stephen A. Smith, so who knows about the legitimacy of any of this?) comes word that the NBA will probably turn All-Star weekend into All-Star week, giving teams more time off in mid-season. More back-to-backs and possibly an earlier start to the season would be involved, although there's no indication the number of games would be affected.
I wonder whether the time will come when, sometime in August, teams will all play doubleheaders, with the first doubleheader game being the last game of the previous season and the second doubleheader game being the initial game of the following season. Time between the two games would be used for speed-trading.

The NBA is poised to turn the All-Star break into All-Star week this coming season, the Sun Sentinel has learned, providing teams with a full week off at midseason. The move, which would give players seven days off between games in mid-February, would result in an increase of one or two back-to-back sets per team for the coming season, a party familiar with the process said. "That's the model they're using right now while they're filling in the schedule," an NBA source familiar with the process told the Sun Sentinel Friday. "Could they go back and use some of those dates if needed? That's possible. But the week off looks like what's going to happen." South Florida Sun-Sentinel

With the elongated All-Star break, the possibility of then starting the 2015-16 season a week earlier also has been deliberated recently, although that dynamic has yet to gain traction, according to an NBA source familiar with the situation, with such a move potentially requiring an adjustment in the collective-bargaining agreement. "And then," the NBA source said, "we'd have to look at dates already committed to on the [2015] preseason schedule." South Florida Sun-Sentinel

You always have to be mindful of every possible consequence that can result from a schedule change. The primary concern should be injuries. Having more back-to-backs could certainly prove to become an issue if guys are not getting adequate rest.
And another thing, why does it need to be an entire week when they can fit all of the festivities into a couple hours over the span of 3 nights as they've been doing for years? Let me guess: money.

Re: Oh Good. We really need a longer season.
Instead of having so many back-to-backs, why don't they try to schedule some of the division games like baseball does? The Celtics could travel to Toronto, play one night, use the second day to practice and play Toronto again on the third day.
Less travel, more practice time, less back-to-backs. Playing a team twice in a row in the same location could also bring out some animosity (playoff intensity?) between some of the opposing players, which would make the games more "interesting" for the fans.
They could do this early in the season to get things going and then again at the end of the season to prime for the early rounds of the playoffs. In between, they could play the out of division and the out of conference games in order to fill in the 82 game schedule.
The odd number of teams in each division (5) and in each conference (15) could complicate things a bit. I'm sure they could figure it out with a slide rule, let alone with a computer.

Great idea, gyso. They could even do the inter-conference games back-to-back. The following season, the other team gets the two home games, etc. Its really not that big a deal.

I'd like to see the East and West play more games against each other. I think it would make the game more interesting and competitive.
