WALTHAM — The unknown will continue to surround Celtics rookie James Young until we get to see him play against NBA talent other than those wearing the same uniform.
So for now, the only words that can be taken in terms of talent evaluation are from his teammates and his coaches. So far they like what they see out of the 17th pick in this year’s draft.
“He’s real talented, a quick learner, a tremendous athlete,” Jeff Green said of Young today at the Celtics practice facility in Waltham. “He can shoot the ball, but he’s young. He will get better, and he is going to get better.”
Young could see minutes with the Celtics, or he could see time in the D-League, even though he openly was against that at media day, to help get the 19-year-old more accustomed to the professional game. The word out of Kentucky was that his skills as a shooter would translate to the next level. What the Celtics have noticed so far, is that his ability on the defensive end of the floor, albeit just a few days into camp, hasn’t been out of place against his older peers.
“James is really a good defender. He’s long, he’s active, physical,” Celtics forward Jared Sullinger said. “Ofcourse he’s going to have his rookie lumps. He’s working through them.”
Celtics head coach Brad Stevens said he poured over tape from the sessions so far and hasn’t see Young in terrible positioning on the defensive end when the second-year head coach studies the film. The caveat is that it’s early, and everyone knows that there will be growing pains when things start picking up as camp gets going.
“The most impressive thing about James was that he never really crossed my radar as making mistakes defensively, which is pretty impressive for a young guy,” Stevens said.

MY NOTE: So, Stevens says something about Young and all the writers built an article around that.
