I am glad this failed.
This was not the right proposal.

Reports: NBA lottery reform fails at Board of Governors vote

Sam Hinkie has to be pretty happy today. (USATSI) Sam Hinkie has to be pretty happy today. (USATSI)
Both Yahoo Sports and Grantland report that the proposed changes to the NBA draft lottery format to more evenly distribute the odds among the 14 non-playoff teams for top picks has failed in vote at the NBA's Board of Governors' meeting.
So most likely this thing is coming back up again, whether at the February meetings at All-Star or next summer. Nearly all front offices have agreed there needs to be a change, just not this change. It's a huge break for the Sixers, who need this change to wait until after they get through at least another draft.
It's extremely interesting that essentially the entire "Spurs" contingent, those teams lead by current or former members of that regime (San Antonio -- obviously, Oklahoma City, Utah, New Orleans, and Atlanta) voted against the change, with Orlando the lone hold out.
The no vote means that for now, the odds remain the same. It also likely means that any sort of significant and dramatic change, like the "wheel" concept, would fail. The league's looking at a modification, a tweak, not wholesale change.

Maybe they should appoint Stupid Stern to head up a commission. Seriously, Stern knows all about rigging the lottery (Ewing to NY, Duncan to SA, James to Cle). Nah, never mind, bad idea: the NBA is such a better place without the Stupe.

Disappointing. The current system is broken. It rewards teams like the 26ers, and allows Cleveland 3 #1s in 4 years.

This reform would not have prevented getting 3 #1's in 4 years.

Re: Lottery Reform Voted Down
then just go with worst record best pick, etc. like the old days.
but, make the NBA team minimum salary VERY high, so no team can do a blatant tank job like Philly has the last two years.
the new TV money means NO team will lose money anymore.
make the cap around $100M and a HARD cap (no more crazy exceptions like now).
and the minimum around $80M or MORE.
TANK THAT Phily!

Philly could probably care less what happens with the draft after next summer.
They are almost done building a potentially talented young team.
They could make some noise in the East in a couple of years.
Philly will hit the minimum salary this year by taking on other teams salary and they will gain some draft picks for doing so.
A hard cap could not be implemented until the next CBA comes into effect, which is no sooner then 7/1/17 and could be years after that.

Wow, those three teams got the support they needed. I'd like to have privvy to some of the communications that transpired yesterday.

Well there needs to be SOME reform. Like limitations on getting the top pick within a certain time period or penalties for moves perceived as tanking.
