Three Point Shooting by a team that does not shoot them well.
I believe that the Celtics have taken far too many three point shots this season for a team that does not seem to shoot this shot very well.
I am not against the 3 point shot, and some teams use is exceptionally well. If we had a Ray Allen type of shooter I would allow him to shoot
the 3 at any time. But, when we have a bunch of guys who are shooting less than 30% on threes there needs to be a system that limits
the total number of threes taken per game.
Here is my plan:
No problem with these < 30% guys taking a three pointer. If it goes in, the same guy can continue to shoot them until missing two in a row. You never know when a guy is
going to be 'hot' on a certain night/game. This thought is to prevent the lesser three point shooters from ending a game going one for six (seven or even eight) like has happened many, many times this season. So say, player A makes his first, misses one, then makes another and then misses two? He ends his three point shooting night with five such shots and ended up making two. A pretty good night and nothing like ending a game going one for whatever.
The guys who are season long >30% get to shoot three consecutive misses before getting shut down for the night. So, miss one, make two, miss the next three and this guy ends the night two for six. Not a great night, but still better than two for eight or nine, etc.
Guys who shoot over 38% can shoot more often than the other two categories because they have proven themselves much more.
Your thoughts?

I think what Stevens is doing is implementing the offense he wants to use in the long term, including featuring the three-point shot, rather than tailoring the offense to the strengths of his current roster, which would mean far fewer threes.
Guys can either get better at shooting threes and prove they deserve to stay, or they can bring guys in who can shoot from distance, but they're not going to stop shooting them. Yes, they want to do well in the short term, including making the playoffs, but they're going to sacrifice the long-term goal of implementing the offense that they want just because the current roster doesn't shoot the three very well.
Run the offense that you plan to run, and guys can either get better at shooting threes, find a place in it without shooting threes, or get replaced.

I think the Celtics should make use of what I would call a "Triple Sniper." This guy would just pick off any Celtic who misses more than two consecutive threes. The Celtics would petition the league office to allow them an extra timeout for dragging off the carcass. I believe this would cut down considerably on the number of errant threes as the only Celtic who would still fire away with no conscience would be Isaiah Thomas. I could even envision an elimination of world hunger if a world-wide lottery were instituted to pick the exact date and time Isaiah would get his. And those who are in love with James Young would see him recalled sooner rather than later as a replacement; and his fans could enjoy watching him perform for all of 41 seconds.

Celtics would have run into big time salary cap problems if 8 or 9 guys had been shot this year, Sam.

Unless the league moves the 3-pt line back, the Celtics and the rest of the NBA will continue to shoot threes at current or higher rates. We all have our opinions and philosophies about the 3, and proponents and opponents have made many fine points, but as long as players can hit threes at current rates, teams are going to take them. Only way it will change is if the line is moved back and rates go down, and that is not likely to happen.

Well put, Shamrock. Hard to move the line back and still be able to shoot threes from the corners. But I'd love it if they'd move it back at least five feet.
