Reports: Pacers close to trading Hibbert to Lakers
The Indiana Pacers are close to a trade that would send center Roy Hibbert to the Lakers for a future second-round pick, according to multiple sources, including Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.
The deal allows the Pacers to shed themselves of Hibbert's more than $15 million salary, after they reached agreement with free agent guard Monta Ellis on a four-year, $44 million deal, and adds the 7-foot-2 Hibbert to a Lakers frontcourt after Los Angeles lost out on coveted free agent big man LaMarcus Aldridge to the San Antonio Spurs.
Good luck with that.

Steve,
Ouch!
As I said on the LMA thread, there's a cautionary tale here for the Celtics. 17 banners is nice but what free agents want now is banners now.

Re: Hibbert to Lakers
The Lakers and Celtics are like rotten apples and juicy oranges.
The line that jumped out at me in the last link was, "...it will be sad to watch a franchise so rooted in its past that it can't figure out how to create a future."
The Celtics have more of a right than the Lakers will ever have to be rooted in the past because the Celtics have established a tradition that, with a few blips along the way, has remained both constant and admirable. The Lakers have been more like a series of unrelated fads along the way.
In free agency, the Celtics are used to being the underdogs, and there's no danger in hell of their being overconfident that they can have everything they want. The Celtics' front men are savvy, player-oriented, forward-thinking individuals who would never in a million years make the same mistakes the Lakers' pitch team made. Substitute Brad Stevens for the diamond-stud Kobe Bryant in the selling equation, and the difference is compellingly in favor of the Celtics.
All of this does not mean the Celtics are walking away with stars in free agency (obviously, they're not), but they haven't been stupid enough to spend a lot of time courting stars who were obviously out of reach. Instead, they have eschewed tinsel in favor of chemistry in their off-season moves. And they're not done yet.
The Lakers actually are pretty lucky to have gotten Hibbert for just a second-rounder because he obviously has some skills. How he reacts to the Looney Tunes environment will be interesting to watch. If Lakers management should regard him as a linchpin who will lead the Lakers back to respectability, the results could be fascinating. But he'd probably be more attractive to other free agents than a sharp stick in the eye. Maybe!
There are cautionary tales and traps all over the place in player acquisition strategy. But making the mistakes of the Lakers would be very low on the list.

112288,
Better than the Lakers, who didn't make the playoffs. They have signed zero free agents. Zero. In fact, they have been snubbed, publicly, repeatedly. Amir Johnson might not be a high profile signing but he is a signing and he's a player that was the defensive anchor of a solidly playoff team. So he's not the cast off of a crappy team. Larry jettisoned Hibbert because he's big but slow and offensively challenged (especially from the dotted circle out!) and that's not way the league is going. The Lakers needed a center. Their center was Robert Sacre and, with the loss of Jordan Hill and Ed Davis, that's it. Zeller might not be the second coming of Bill Russell but he beats the crap out of Robert Sacre and we have Kelly. Once again, maybe not our choice for back up center (not even Danny's. When Kelly was drafted Danny said he saw Kelly as a PF in the NBA, NOT a center. He has been dragooned into playing center like the way Sully was) but that's still one 7'er more than the Lakers had. To me, I see this trade as an act of desperation by the Lakers. NO free agents, Kobe is going to be 37 and who knows how well/long his body will hold up and they trade for a player that cannot/does not run. They needed , desperately, to do something. We don't. We have a team that's better than the one we ended up with last year, that has another year of experience and aging in the same system. If Hibbert is a one-and-doner in LA, like Howard was, then all this trade is about is about putting a few more butts in the seats this year and not about rebuilding.

Re: Hibbert to Lakers
Bob,
It is a lot better position to be in with that signing then where we are right now. What we could not get Robin Lopez at least??????
So far this is a bust of a free agent season.

Re: Hibbert to Lakers
This is a good deal for the Lakers. Hibbert was an allstar a couple of years ago, and a legitimate center. For a 2nd round pick? Not bad. If there were more than one year left on his contract, it would be a different story. They struck out in free agency, so no need to hoard cap space this year. They can take a look at Hibbert for one year, and if the change of scenary helps his game they can resign him on a reasonable contract and still have tons of space next summer.

Hibbert despite all his warts is way better than anything we got at the center position, so NOW we'll see if we can trade for one.....does anybody besides Sam and bob h have any confidence Danny can pull anything off?

Zeller outplayed him in our matchups, or at least one of them, by beating him up and down the court. And with Rozier on our roster now, Zeller's (and KO's) speed getting up and down the court is going to be maximized.

Re: Hibbert to Lakers
Larry Bird has got to have the widest grin . . . ear to ear. He got what he wanted, Hibbert gone at any cost. Bird said that he wanted Indy to go with a faster paced game and indicated that speed wasn't one of Hibbert's strengths.
Perhaps the Lakers will play at a pace better suited to Hibbert's skill-set. Time will tell.
I guess that this is a perfect example of a win-win for both sides.

Good pick up for LAL, in my opinion.
If you can't make the biggest moves, then make good small ones.

I'm sure he realizes it's his salary as compared to his actual production that caused him to net so little in that trade. And if he has any competitive spirit left at all (which is doubtful) he'll try to prove people wrong.

Re: Hibbert to Lakers
Good observation, db.
No sense dumping on the Lakers for taking somewhat of a risk (and a tiny one, given what they gave up). If the Celtics had signed Hibbert, I'm sure many of us would be posting positive articles about his naive ability, his desire to win, how he was the rage of the league a couple of years ago, etc., etc., etc.,

Here's an interview with the Lakers other center:

Key quote: "If I don't make this I'm done."
At least that's sunk in at the moment. Let's see if those are just empty words or if he knows how true that is.
