Exec: Jimmy Butler 'As Good As Gone'

MAR 30, 2017 11:07 AM

During the lead up to the trade deadline, Jimmy Butler and Paul George were discussed by teams. Both the Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers are in limbo between true contender status and rebuilding.

According to one front office source that spoke with The Ringer, Butler is "as good as gone."

Butler has a player option in which he can become a free agent in 2019, while George can opt for free agency in 2018.

There were a number of teams interested in both players at the deadline with the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets perhaps in the best place to make a blockbuster offer for either Butler or George without completely gutting their team.

MY NOTE:  "Why give away the store when I can get him for what I'd have to pay him anyway and keep my assets for additional, later trades?", muses Danny Ainge. If this rumor is true, then Chicago will trade Butler next year, so they can get something for him, but he will have to agree to re-sign with the new team or they will be taking a HUGE risk, because the price for him will be high.

One of the advantages of making a trade would be to reduce the amount of added salary by the amount of salaries sent out in the trade) to the team payroll - allowing for a lower team salary - and as far as loosing the player if he walks when his contract expires - his salary also goes with him - giving the team his former salary to shop for another free agent.

Swish,

We can still make a trade using the assets that would have gone to Chicago for Butler, we'll just send them somewhere else for another player Danny likes (rim protector?).  That gobbles up cap space (i.e.Butler's unoffset contract) but that is why Danny is hoarding cap space, it's so he can spend it on an elite player.

bob/////    I agree with you that Danny is after a bigger fish than Butler - who I don't qualify as an elite player. He sure has the assets to pull off a deal for an elite player. - all he needs is a willing trading partner.

Add on: or free agency

Swish,
Who, in your opinion, can be a bigger fish than JB and whom DA can realistically target in trade or free agency?

I would not attempt to gauge what is realistic for the future - not knowing what conditions might exist a year or two from now.
But for right now I'll go with George, Jordan, and Griffin if completely healthy.
