The Boston Celtics have made qualifying offers to Terry Rozier and Daniel Theis, officially making them free agents. They did not make one to Brad Wanamaker, making him an unrestricted free agent.


These are all expected moves that don’t necessarily indicate any changes in the team’s plans. Rozier remains a backup plan just in case Kemba Walker falls through for some reason. He also could be used in a sign-and-trade, even though that would be complicated.

Ultimately, if Boston is unable to perform the necessary cap gymnastics to maximize their roster while acquiring Walker (there are some wild scenarios that, if pulled off, could allow Boston to keep a role player like Marcus Morris), they will likely rescind the qualifying offer to Rozier and make him an unrestricted free agent.

Theis can stick around without impacting the Walker deal. He could be useful in providing the Celtics some frontcourt depth, especially if the only other big they can sign is with the $4.7 million room mid-level exception. Theis’s ability to stretch the floor could earn him some good minutes off the bench.

Wanamaker probably won’t draw much interest around the league and he could likely be re-signed to a minimum deal if needed.

Probably not. Celtics do not have the CAP space to add Capela.

In order to sign Kemba as a free agent, Rozier's salary has to be totally gone. In the trade that you propose, we would take back Capela's salary, which would be the same as still having Rozier's salary on the books.

We could possibly sign-and-trade Rozier to another team and get back future draft picks and maybe cash, but we cannot accept any current salary back prior the Kemba signing.

From what I have read, the Theis contract is small enough so that after it goes on the books, we are still able to sign Kemba Walker for as much as is allowed under current Salary Cap rules.


Not so for Terry Rozier.
