Gordon Hayward Injury Update

REPORT: Gordon Hayward has fracture in fourth metacarpal
Marty Fenn Marty Fenn
Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward has received an official diagnosis on the hand injury he suffered during Saturday night’s victory over the San Antonio Spurs.
A series of X-rays have revealed that Hayward suffered a fourth metacarpal fracture. He will still see a hand specialist in New York to determine whether or not he needs surgery, but Keith Smith of Yahoo! Sports suggests that this kind of injury can last up to three weeks, at a minimum.

Have heard that the early x-rays on Gordon Hayward indicated that he fractured his left fourth metacarpal. That's the bone in in his ring finger that is closest to the palm of the hand. This is often known as a "Boxer's Fracture". This is often treated with a split for 3 weeks.

If Hayward does indeed need surgery, however, he will likely miss at least one to two months of action.
The Celtics will await the specialist’s decision with baited breath, but any long-term absence would be absolutely crushing.
Hayward was in the midst of a massive comeback campaign. He had suffered through a disappointing 2018-19 season in which he failed to assert himself on the offensive end while often deferring to Kyrie Irving. Hayward also had to play the role of an undersized power forward and could never really get comfortable with his usage.
However, the 29-year-old insisted that he was in tremendous basketball shape throughout the summer. Hayward said that he finally had a full offseason to focus on his game instead of focusing on rehab, and that he felt he could return to being an All-Star caliber talent.
Through the first eight games of the season, Hayward was averaging 18.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 4.1 assists while posting a 61.4 Effective Field Goal Percentage. With Hayward back at the peak of his powers, the Celtics cruised to a 7-1 start at the top of the Eastern Conference.
Boston and Hayward will await the specialist’s decision before taking the next step in the recovery process.

MY NOTE: Hayward is scheduled to meet with a hand specialist in NY on Monday.

Re: Gordon Hayward Injury Update
It could have been alot worse. Hopefully the hand specialist will shed more light on the injury and the Celtics will know where they are headed.
Again, it is not like we do not have players to fill his spot, it is just that this came right at a point where Hayward was basically becoming a leader on the floor. Fingers crossed that it is sooner rather than later that he returns

In the old days they would tap the broke finger to the good finger and play.
This will be a minor setback.

The metacarpal is in the hand, not the finger.

I thought the fingers where part of the hand just like the toes are part of the foot.atcross wrote:dboss wrote:In the old days they would tap the broke finger to the good finger and play.

Dboss you are so right. Remember the bandage halfway up his thigh that Russell wore in his last games? Guys were not out on flipping "load management' in the old days, In Red's and Russ's words, 'IF YOU CAN WALK, YOU CAN PLAY"!!!! I know life has changed but we do tend to baby our players. In Hayward's defense, he rebounds, handles the ball with both hands, but shoots with his right hand. I will be interested to see how long he is really out
Hey Worcester.....seeking a diagnosis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember that. Back in the days NBA Players were a lot tougher. They played through injuries, fatigue, tough schedules and less than ideal transportation and accommodation options.
I have read conflicting opinions about the treatment and healing time.
It pisses me off that Gordon has to go through this. I am happy it is not a year end game changer. He will be back and ready to go. He has been the most impactful player on the team this year.
We should have an update about his condition later today.

Re: Gordon Hayward Injury Update
The 4th metacarpal on the left hand is not a finger but the bonne leading to the knuckle before the ring finger. Depending on how it is treated it can be fully recovered in 4 weeks. When I was 35 I broke the 5th metatarsal on my left foot - a different appendage- taped it tight and ran e-stim through it daily. In three weeks I was fully healed, running 3 to 4 miles on it a day. GH will probably have it set in a cast and may have pulsed electro magnetic stimulus applied to speed healing.
Meanwhile I am in NZ again in the most beautiful scenery you can imagine. It is Tuesday November 12 here, and the Celts have yet to play!

But then again - I would bet that life in general was much more demanding in the good old days then it is now. Its not just the athletes that enjoy a more priveleged life today.

Re: Gordon Hayward Injury Update
True Swish, look at the way our kids are growing up. I babysat for my sisters, my brother's kids, my uncle's kids, never got a penny!!!! The very day I turned sixteen, my mother got my brother to take me down to the biggest department store in our area, Grover Cronin's, and he got me a job working for one of the buyer's of the store who he was friends with. This was before working papers were required, so I could not work before sixteen. What a way to kick off my birthday, but, back then, I was thrilled.
Today, alot of kids do not hold jobs until they are out of school. This is not to begrudge them, life is just so different today.
Good or bad???? You have your opinion, others have theirs. I am glad I grew up when I did

Re: Gordon Hayward Injury Update
It was a different time no doubt. We had less but our lives felt safer. A kid could safely walk home from school. We played outside. Our moms would send us to the corner store to pick up a loaf of bread. We had to do our homework. We had chores to do. Things worked better and longer. We appreciated the value of work.swish wrote:But then again - I would bet that life in general was much more demanding in the good old days then it is now. I remember saving up for my first pair of Converse Allstars. They were black low cut sneakers and they cost me $8 bucks at the Army and Navy store. I have a friend in Boston who coaches basketball ages 10-13. He told me these kids are rolling with $150 pair of sneakers that their parents buy for them.
So there you go. We had a Motorola B and W TV and just one channel (WBZ channel 4) Now kids have to have their own 4K flat screen in their rooms along with all the digital gadgets to pass the time.
Swish I am sure you have even more distant memories.

Re: Gordon Hayward Injury Update
Gordon having surgery in NY today. No report on time line. Stevens had made the remark on Saturday night that it might be a faster return to the floor if he had surgery. His agent gave no other details.
If I remember correctly, Marcus Smart went to NY for a hand specialist too. With all the hospitals and specialists in Boston, this hand specialist must be something special

Rosalie,
There's a craft brewery in my town. One night I was there with a friend and struck up a conversation with the guy next to me. He was a hand surgeon. He lives in Phoenix, Arizona but travels up and down the West Coast for patients. That's why he was in San Carlos. He performed surgery in San Francisco but his rent-a-jet flies in-and-out of tiny San Carlos airport. He was done with surgery for a week and the first thing he does is crack a beer. Doesn't matter if he finishes surgery at 7am, if he knows he will not be operating for 72 hours +, he's drinking.
Told us he makes $1M/month, minus some small office expenses (he doesn't meet paients, nor operate, anywhere except hospitals) and the cost of the jet.
There are LOTS of excellent doctors in the SF Bay area. Stanford is maybe 10 miles from me and Stanford Medical School turns out elite surgeons, but nobody wants to take chances with their hands, so they call for him.

Re: Gordon Hayward Injury Update
I know you are right there, Bob. Good doctors will go anywhere and do their thing and then go home. I should have thought of this myself. The heart surgeon who operated on me from Mass General was a wonderful doctor. In fact I shared some stories with Sam before he made the decision to finally set up heart surgery for himself. Unfortunately, he waited a little too long. I was so dismayed about that. My point is, shortly after I had my surgery, this doctor travelled to Houston for a seminar and other meetings. Next thing I knew, he was working at the DeBaky heart clinic, no longer in Boston.
He has traveled the world performing surgery, so.....I guess it was foolish of me to wonder about a hand doctor.
This guy must be special, and there is something about going to a doctor like this if you are the patient. Whoever he is, just put him back together and lets get him back on the floor!!!!!! Sounds awful doesn’t;t it? True Celtic fan

Here's the timetable on Gordon Hayward's injury after undergoing surgery
By A. Sherrod Blakely
November 11, 2019 8:02 PM
BOSTON -- The good news is that Gordon Hayward’s recent left hand injury won’t hurt the Celtics anywhere close to the ankle injury he suffered a couple years ago.
But the Celtics will still have to manage to find success without him for a spell, with successful surgery on a fourth metacarpal fracture in his left hand sidelining him for about six weeks.
Beginning from when the injury occurred - November 9 at Dallas - that would put Hayward’s return back to the floor sometime shortly before Christmas.
If he returns six weeks from the date of the injury, that would have him back for Boston’s Dec. 22 game against Charlotte.
Boston has managed to win with key players down at times already this season.
And while the timing certainly isn’t great when you consider how both Hayward and the Celtics (7-1, best record in the NBA) were playing, Stevens reiterated that this injury is dramatically different than the ankle injury Hayward suffered a couple years ago which sidelined for all but the first five minutes of the 2017-2018 season.
This injury isn’t that severe, even with the most conservative timelines having him back on the floor at some point this season.
