A dud of an ending to an otherwise very enjoyable Summer League.

Started out with a 10 point lead, looking like another blow out, and then they ratcheted up their defensive energy and we started missing and turning the ball over.

28 turnovers for us.  28.  In a 40 minute game.  Pritchard with 6 turnovers and perhaps the worst game I've ever seen him play.  I love that he came back and wanted to compete but his performance was just awful.

Nesmith was another.  6 turnovers, 2-8 from 3.  Bergarin with 4, one of which was just a crazy 3/4 court pass to nobody.

Hauser with a solid, game.  Nothing too flashy but neither did he implode like everybody else.

Fernando with 2 rebounds in 20 minutes to go with his 3 turnovers.  He had 2 blocks in the first 4 minutes of the game, when everybody in green was looking good, and then just fell apart, just like everybody else.

They had 19 offensive rebounds, out of 43 total.  That's sick.  They were getting and putting back in their own misses because nobody was going to the ball.  The defender would do his best to defend the shot and when the miss came off the rim the only one going for it was the shooter or a King.  We were just standing around waiting for the ball to come to us, and that's not how the ball bounces.

The only player I saw that looked like he was going to fight to the absolute bitter end was Carsen Edwards.  He has gotten what I consider his fair share of shite from me, no more than he deserves, but last night he was playing harder than anybody else in green.  I'm down on him because I think he sucks, but when he doesn't make any more bad decisions than anybody else and still plays harder than everybody else I have to give him his props.

Well, this is it for basketball for a while.  The good news is that because the season started later and ended later this year, Summer League was pushed back a month to August.  And because the league is trying to get back to their original schedule and start on time (our first regular season game is October 20th) the dead zone between SL and camp is shorter.  Pro camp starts on September 28th, which is about when it usually starts +/- a few days.  That's 41 days from now.  Players will start trickling back into the Auerbach Center sometime in the 1st and 2nd week of September to start working out, playing some pickup games and just generally getting ready and that's only 2-3 weeks away.  And we know Brad's not done because he has to shed contracts, we just don't know whose or how.

There is no doubt that Carsen Edwards played longer and harder than anyone out there for Boston last night. He really wanted to win that game. The rest looked like they had done their fair share of partying in Vegas during the time they were waiting to play this game. Sacramento came out to win, they may have been out of it for the first half of the first quarter, but the rest of the game was theirs for the taking. Turnover after turnover on the Boston side. Not hitting their shots. they were awful.

well, this part is over. Now we wait for the big boys to come to camp in 5 weeks. Seems like a long time away, but it will be here before we know it.

And, finally, Romeo with another injury . what is it with that guy????

see you around

Well this one went south with 3:17 left in the QTR when Mitchell drained a 3 pointer giving the Kings a 19-17 lead.  They never looked back and got progressively better as we continued to get progressively worse.

I really enjoyed watching all 5 games.  It was good fix for a basketball junkie!

Let's take a look at the guys.

Carsen Edwards

Proved that he is a gunner.  Unfortunately his volume vs his makes remains the issue with him other than his diminutive profile.  He plays hard and shows a great deal of energy.  He played 27.4 MPG while averaging 13.8 PPG, 4.4 assists and a surprising 5.6 rebounds.  He also produced very poor shooting numbers.  He was 34.2% on FGA and even worse behind the arc at only 28.6%.  You would hope that some GM looking to add a cheap one year contract for a guy that can come in and heat up quickly, would now forget that CE has yet to prove that he is a reliable shot maker.  Dud

Yam got hurt and was a non factor after game 1.  This was our look see.  Promising prospect that is not ready to contribute to this team yet.  Go back to Israel.  The Celtics are not going to buy out the contract.  Post your things to get better at list from the Celtics and come back over next summer for another look see.

Juhann Begarin

Really liked the physical aspects of his game and he had a couple of highlights plays each game but overall he has a lot of work to do on all related basketball skills on offense like dribbling, passing, shooting from the field, from deep and at the line and his decision making.  He has all the tools to be a defender but missed way too many reads and rotations.  Another year in France is definitely needed.  Like yam take the list seriously.  He needs a lot more reps.

AN and PP can go back to work and should have plenty of video to watch and learn from.  The two of them had very strong overall play and both will factor into our rotations.

Sam Hauser

Will be getting a call up during the season.  He appears to be a very solid player and he is an excellent shooter.

Bruno Fernando

likely made the cut.  He showed me enough to have earned a position as our 3rd-4th string center. He average 17.6 MPG scoring 9.3 points with 5.3 rebounds.  He shot 75% from the field.

Romeo Langford

25.7 MPG. Average 11 PPG and 3.3 rebounds and 2 assists.  Shot ok at 44% from the field.  He also went 38.5% from deep on 4.3 attempts per game.  The shooting looks much better and we saw a few athletics finished.  His ball handling and play making skills are still below average  (2 assists and 2.3 turnovers is a negative A/TOV ratio)  He did not play because of his sore wrist.  Can he be available to play?  That is the big question.

I gather that they have already told the rookie that he will be spending the year over in France. After playing in the summer league, he is disappointed, feels he can play in this league, but my opinion is, get the work in this year kid, you will get a chance to play next year if you show improvement. He is just a youngster

There is a chance that Boston could offer the kid a 2 way deal and then he can get some valuable G League experience and also get fully indoctrinated into the way the Celtics want him to play.

Which is a better learning experience, France or G league? He needs a lot of work.

How badly is Romeo hurt? A bad portent of things to come or just a fluke?

dboss,

A very good synopsis, especially on the players.  I would add, with Hauser, he needs to work on shooting on the move, off of dribble handoffs and coming around screens.  With his size (6'8") and his nice high release point he could position himself as a Duncan Robinson (6'7") type of player, and Duncan Robinson has done very, very well for himself for an undrafted player.  But what Robinson can do is more than just catch-and-shoot, he can shoot 3s off of high pin-downs like Ray Allen (and Maravich) could.  That's Hauser's next level up.

Yes, and Robinson can boast of having spent a year at Phillips Exeter and being an alumnus of Williams College. I sure hope Sam Hauser can surpass Duncan someday.

Sam impresses me, and he did make one three off a handoff. Any chance Ray Allen would be willing to coach him up?

Did my DVR zip-through of the final game. Great thing about summer games; 15 - 20 minutes through a recorded game tells you what you need to know.

It looks to me like summer league showed we have some added depth with Fernando behind RWIII, Horford and Kanter. Considering Williams’ injury bug and Horford’s age related slow down, that could be a nice plus.

PP looked exhausted to me, but credit has to be given to the opposite coaching staff that was prepared to defend him. Bottomline they wanted it more than we did, we got out hustled the whole game. Romeo didn’t show me enough, more TO’s than assists is never a good thing, and he’s a veteran. Always a group of hungry rookies coming in every year, why were a lot of those guys outplaying Romeo? Then he couldn’t even play in the championship game. He really disappointed me.
