In what’s been a summer of change for the Boston Celtics organization, the coaching staff has undergone a massive makeover with multiple new faces joining Ime Udoka’s staff. New President Of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens and head coach Ime Udoka have put together a coaching team full of young and vibrant minds, all of whom are respected by their peers around the league.

Here’s the full list of coaches as detailed in the Celtics press release earlier today.

Head coach: Ime Udoka (Portland State)

Assistant coaches: Will Hardy (Williams College), Damon Stoudamire (Arizona), Ben Sullivan (Portland), Joe Mazzulla (West Virginia), Aaron Miles (Kansas), Tony Dobbins (Richmond)

Player enhancement staff: Evan Bradds (Belmont), Garrett Jackson (Saint Mary’s), DJ MacLeay (Bucknell), Steve Tchiengang (Vanderbilt)

Special assistant to head coach: Matt Reynolds (Syracuse)

The revamped coaching team is sure to provide the Boston Celtics will a new direction in player development. For example, Will Hardy has been on the San Antonio Spurs staff for the last eleven years and also accompanied Greg Popovich to the Tokyo Olympics earlier this year.

Both Udoka and Stoudamire will bring experience as players and coaches, which will help bridge any gap when conveying ideas and methods to the playing staff. Another coaching addition to be excited about is Ben Sullivan, who is known as a shooting specialist and joins the team from the Milwaukee Bucks.

According to the Celtics press release, “Prior to his time in Milwaukee and Atlanta, Sullivan served as an assistant video coordinator with San Antonio while also working in its basketball development department.” That makes Sullivan the third coach on the roster with links to the Popovich coaching tree.

Joe Mazzulla will return to the Celtics for his third year on the coaching staff and is a name most Celtics fans should recognize after leading the Summer League team to a 4-1 record in Vegas back in August.

Both Stevens and Udoka moved quickly to establish their coaching targets in time for training camp as the Celtics look to bounce back from a disappointing 2020-21 season. And with a number of high-upside young guys on the roster, having a well-established group of coaches will allow the Celtics to develop their talent in house throughout the season.

Training camp is due to start in a week. There are also four pre-season games to look forward to in early October against the Orlando Magic (October 4th), Toronto Raptors (October 9th), the Orlando Magic again (October 13th), and finally the Miami Heat (October 15th).

Lots of coaches who seem to be highly thought of, but which guy is the "big man" coach?

Ime coached Tim Duncan,  Joel Embid, Al Horford.  He has a wealth of experience working with big guys.

Ime really does look like the perfect coach for this team.

It is rather unusual when a new coach comes in and has already coached a lot of players on the roster.

Al Horford and Josh Richardson in Philly plus Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart and Jayson Tatum.

Ime has also managed to assemble a coaching staff with SA Spurs connection to Pop.

His time in Philly and Brooklyn gives the Celtics an advantage in the East over 2 of the top 5 teams we will be competing against.  He knows the plays that both Doc Rivers and Steve Nash like to run. He knows how they play.

As we know coach Bud spent many years in SA before becoming the Hawks head coach and then moving on to the Bucks.  If you take a deep dive into the Bucks you come away with quality basketball at both ends of the floor and a level of Spurs like discipline.

I believe that Ime understands the Spurs way of doing things that has manifested itself in the Bucks.

Again, familiarity with how an opponent plays is a big plus with Ime on the bench.

I have never seen a coach score a basket in a game for his team but great coaching makes for great teams.

In sum, the middle of the road ranking for the Celtics  does not contemplate the impact that Ime Udoka could have on the quality of basketball to be played by his team because of his connectivity with 5 of our top 6 players, experience coaching 2 prominent contenders and the dynamics of learning how to coach from the best NBA coach in the league.
