Re: Danilo Gallinari to Sign With the Celtics
I'm with dboss. We're not signing Gal to be a defensive stopper. We're signing him to help us get through the scoring droughts that plague this team.

He was often playing with Huerter and Young, not exactly pit bull defenders; playing with our core Smart, Tatum, Brown, Timelord his defensive numbers can only get better.

Gallinari needs to be on the floor with RWill. As long as he increases his defensive effort a bit, we should do well.
What he definitely does well is shoot and attack mismatches and closeouts. Switch a small on him and he posts up well. Moves the ball well. I am very happy, he will be a good presence on the bench and GWill just got some good competition.

Gallinari Adds Size, Offensive Firepower to Boston's Bench

The Boston Celtics made their first splash of free agency Tuesday morning by signing Danilo Gallinari, a 13-year veteran sharpshooter who should add size and scoring to Boston’s bench.
Gallinari is the second major addition that the C’s have made in the past four days after acquiring Malcolm Brogdon, a versatile combo guard, via a trade with the Indiana Pacers Saturday afternoon.
“We are thrilled to welcome Danilo to Boston”, Celtics President of Basketball Operations, Brad Stevens stated Tuesday morning. “With his elite shooting abilities, he has long been established as of the league’s best scorers with size.”
The 6-foot-10 power forward played his last two seasons with the Atlanta Hawks before being traded to San Antonio last week in the deal that landed Dejounte Murray in Atlanta. The Spurs subsequently bought out Gallinari’s contract, which allowed him to sign with the C’s.
Last season with the Hawks, while playing mostly in a bench role, Gallinari averaged 11.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and `1.5 assists while shooting 43.4 percent from the field, 38.1 percent from 3-point range, and 90.4 percent from the free-throw line. The soon-to-be 34-year-old has career averages of 15.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists to go along with shooting clips of 42.8 percent from the field, 38.2 percent from long range, and 87.7 percent from the free-throw line.
Gallinari is a fearless 3-point shooter, who can make shots off the catch and off the dribble. He’s shot above 40 percent from deep in three of the past four seasons while averaging 5.5 attempts from long range during that span. He’s made 1,426 career 3-pointers, which is the fifth most all-time by a player 6-foot-10 or taller, per ESPN Stats and Info.
Italy’s all-time leading NBA scorer also boasts excellent free-throw efficiency, having shot above 90 percent from the line in five of his last six seasons.
The Celtics missed having a consistent scoring threat in their second unit last season, finishing in the bottom five in bench scoring at 30.2 points per game. Gallinari should aid them significantly in that aspect and should ultimately take some offensive pressure off Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.
Although his scoring was down from his career average last season, Gallinari still boasted a 118.4 offensive rating. The Celtics know just how lethal he can be, as he’s torched them on many occasions over the years.
His most notable performance against the Celtics came on Feb. 24, 2021, when he poured in 38 points on a career-best 10-of-12 shooting from 3-point range. The effort tied him with Peja Stojakovic for the tallest player in NBA history to make at least 10 triples in a game.
Gallinari is also an efficient scorer in the post and could even play center if the Celtics decide to go small. After all, he is now the tallest member of the Celtics' regular rotation and has some bulk at 236 pounds.
Aside from his scoring ability, Gallinari excels with ball security. He’s averaged just 1.2 turnovers per game in his career, including a minuscule 0.6 per game last season.
A consistent offensive weapon was exactly what Boston’s bench needed during its Finals run this past season, and moving forward they’ll have two in Brogdon and Gallinari.
Bob
MY NOTE: Galli is a career 87.7% frito shooter. He shot over 90% from the line the last two seasons in Atlanta and shot 90%+ in 6 of his 13 years of playing. However, because his 3pt fgas rose to being almost 50% of all his fgas (294 out of 597) last year his ftas went way down, a 1/3 decrease on a per minute basis. Bombing away doesn't produce a lot of contact and whistles.

Danilo Gallinari grew up a Boston Celtics fan, loves Larry Bird: ‘I can’t wait to wear those colors’

Danilo Gallinari had a choice to make upon hitting free agency this summer. Per league sources, the Chicago Bulls were offering him more money than Boston had the ability to with their taxpayer midlevel exception. However, beyond having an appealing young core to play with, the Celtics had one other thing on their side in recruiting the veteran forward: a childhood love of the franchise.
Gallinari grew up in Italy where his father, a talented player overseas, made him a big follower of the Celtics thanks to a love of Larry Bird. The 34-year-old has spent much of his career playing for rivals of Boston but when asked about the opportunity to join the Celtics in free agency, he pointed to his previous fandom as a factor.
“Many reasons, but when you think about the Celtics,” Gallinari explained, “I grew up with my dad since I was a little kid being a Celtics fan, being a Larry Bird fan, so when the Celtics came on the table it was almost like a no-brainer. You walk even in this facility, you look around and see what’s going on around the banners and the history and everything the Celtics were about, it was an easy choice.”
That love of Bird carried on for Gallinari upon entering the NBA when he was given a useful learning tool upon being drafted by the New York Knicks back in 2008 at No. 6 overall.
“The first meeting – when I got drafted by the Knicks, Donnie Walsh was the GM,” Gallinari said. “He gives me this CD, and it’s a Larry Bird CD, and he says, ‘Look at these videos every day and see what you can do.’ Of course, Larry Bird is a legend and so it’s not easy to do the stuff that he was doing. But I looked at those tapes every day. And so, like I said, it’s great to be here and I can’t wait to wear those colors.”
The sharpshooting forward will slot into a reserve role and provide some needed scoring power off the bench for Ime Udoka. He is viewed as a piece that could get Boston over the hump as a contender according to Brad Stevens.
“When talking about Danilo and all he’s accomplished in his 14 years in the NBA with his ability to impact the game, especially in his ability to impact the game in different ways,” Stevens said. “His shooting, his ability to make tough shots on the block, his ability to draw attention and make the right reads, obviously we felt like he was a great fit and addition to our team in helping us hopefully continue to strive for those next steps.”
Gallinari will hope to do all that starting this fall for Boston while carrying out a childhood dream.

Re: Danilo Gallinari to Sign With the Celtics
Larry compared to Danilo - some intersteing stats.
Lifetime Larry was a .886 frito shooter
Danilo .877
Lifetime Larry was a .376 three point shooter,
Danilo .382
His first five seasons in the league Larry averaged .284 from three.
Danilo averaged .378
The rest of Larry's career he averaged .399 from three.
Danilo averaged.377 thereafter - HOWEVER,
Danilo's last four seasons he has averaged .406 on threes. He still can shoot the rock quite admirably.

That’s why stats can be so misleading

On the other hand they are pitilessly free of bias and preference.
