Kevin Garnett thinks Ime Udoka scandal ‘dark times’ will transform Celtics stars

Kevin Garnett was the last player to help bring an NBA Finals title to Boston, giving him a unique perspective on the challenge that Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown face on the heels of a loss to the Warriors last June.
The Hall of Fame forward talked about the upcoming Celtics season with Paul Pierce, Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes in a Showtime Basketball preview and put the emphasis on Boston’s stars setting the tone in the wake of Ime Udoka’s suspension.
“The locker room, the cohesiveness has to be on a thousand,” Garnett explained. “Your real leader, your general is not going to be there for a whole year. Just think about all that promise, all that investment they took on getting to the Finals and what that year was like. You’ve all been there. It’s hard as (expletive) to get to the Finals.
“Thinking about going home as a loser, every time you see somebody being reminded of that (expletive) and then you come in here to this (Udoka suspension).”
The sour taste the team should have in their mouth after the loss in the NBA Finals combined with the adversity of Udoka’s scandal should help bring the best out of Boston’s star power in Garnett’s mind.
“Dark times show true self in personnel,” Garnett said. “This is when people step up and this is when you come out and grow wings.”
Jackson and Garnett also emphasized that despite the turmoil the team has faced in the past week with injuries and Udoka’s suspension, a razor-sharp focus will be required to handle the questions that come with any struggles.
“Every time they go through a lull this season, this is going to get brought up, when they lose two or three games,’ Jackson said.”
“The league don’t care about these excuses,” Garnett added. “When you go through something, it brings you closer together.”
