The Boston Celtics are reportedly pursuing an opt-in and trade with the Washington Wizards for the former Knicks star.

By TimSheilsNBA Jun 21, 2023, 2:44pm EDT 65 Comments / 61 New

With just over 24 hours to go before the 2023 NBA Draft, moves and trades are being discussed around the league as teams better position themselves heading into Thursday night. It should come as no surprise that the Boston Celtics are beginning to get their wheels turning on their offseason as well.

Following a slew of coaching hires, including the addition of former Duke Blue Devil and friend of Jayson Tatum Amile Jefferson, the Boston Celtics are reportedly looking to pull off a big trade with the Washington Wizards for Kristaps Porzingis.

Per Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Celtics are looking into an opt-in and trade for the Latvian bigman as the Wiz look at completely tearing their roster down to the studs following the Bradley Beal trade. Porzingis is mulling over his options, as he holds a $36 Million player option for the upcoming season.

With the Celtics salary cap being in its current state, Boston would be unable to sign Porzingis outright, or at least not at the figure he wants. As Washington is entering a rebuild, acquiring a player like Malcolm Brogdon in return for Porzingis wouldn’t make much sense. The Suns had previously been mentioned as a potential suitor for Malcolm Brogdon, especially after sending out Chris Paul in the deal for Bradley Beal.

Since the terms of that trade have not been set in stone, is there a possibility that Boston jumps in on the trade, and Washington reroutes Brogdon to Phoenix with another piece like DeAndre Ayton ending up in D.C.? Outside of that, the only other logical move that could happen would be a Grant Williams sign-and-trade, which has reportedly been on the table with multiple teams contacting the Celtics on a potential trade for the restricted free agent forward.

There’s certainly more news to come on this situation as it develops, but it appears that Boston is looking to make some big changes ahead of the 2023 NBA draft as well as free agency.

It has to happen today, so at least there's no long wait to find out.

That's a plus.

Could be an expensive pick-up.

Anyone have a handle on what he might have left in the tank?

Part of a shoot off all your cannons for one year then restructure to meet the new CBA the next?

IF he has something left, add Zinger and another big that has a strong inside presence and it gets interesting.

I've never been a big fan , but he had a good season and he is only 27, right there with the Jays, age and experience -wise. Seems to be past his injury problems. Hey, he's more talented than Kornet (gawd Love him) and you can't buy height. I might go Brogdon and ( basphemous as it may seem) Horford.

Do not like giving up Gallo. This trade is a big IF to me. I hate giving up Brogden, he was such. Plus. This is going down, NBCSports has it as a done deal, just not announced

Thanks for pointing out that he's 27.

Mental block on my part I guess, I keep thinking he's older.

Zinger, Al, Rob, Moose and Luke.

Draft a big at #35.

Enough bigs?

Hearing all kinds of rumors related to this one.

Hearing that it will have to be official after the draft due to the Stepien Rule.

If so that could mean a future first rounder is going out in the deal, since you're required to have a first rounder in every other draft.

Lots of noise right now. Clarity later on, I think.

The draft picks are coming from a third team, reportedly the Clippers.

Not yet my friend, not yet.

Not counting on AL, Moose or Luke.

Looking at Rob as limited, best in a backup role.

Big at #35 might help make me a little happier, but waiting patiently.

Malcolm to the Clippers
Gallo to the Wiz

Zinger to the Celtics

Marcus Morris and picks to the Wiz

They are calling it an Opt-in and Trade.

How many teams has Porzingas been on? Seems like he has bounced around a lot. He supposedly had a decent season but ? Let’s see

He does carry personal and injury baggage, but I think given his similar situations with both Udoka and Gallo, the Celtics would have checked him out carefully.

From a financial standpoint, Brad pulled off a big time winner if this goes through. Signing Brown and then Tatum with the new CBA coming will take up a lot of cap room. It would be hard to find any type of big to help balance the roster and provide help to a core rotation. By shedding Brogdon and Gallo's money, he opened up some room. Hate to see Brogdon go, but White and perhaps Pritchard or Davison can help fill the gap. Gallo would be an expensive unknown with that ACL recovery.

Porzingis isn't the strongest defender, but if RWIII can spell him it will help, and help RWIII if he can play fewer minutes.

Could be a good deal from several viewpoints.

Porzingas had a very good year last season. The only issue I have is his injury history but at this point we could say the same thing about, Malcolm and several other players on the roster.

This is a gamble but if it works out Boston has assembled a new big 3.

If this trade goes through I think we may see a return to our 2-big lineup with one PG and JB moving back to the SG position.

The Celtics trading for Kristaps Porzingis on #WorldGiraffeDay is the best part of the deal 🦒
