Wow. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow.

They might not be the GSW of yesteryear but they've been the 2nd best team in the league after the All-Star break (we're #1) and were riding an 8 game road winning streak into today's game. Their record over the last 10 games is now 7-3, which means it was 8-2 when we woke up this morning. In other words, since Klay Thompson returned, they've been hot.

The deluge started because of Steve Kerr's strategy of empowering Jaylen Brown to shoot. Right from the tap they dared him to shoot, and he killed them.

Souichi Terada @SouichiTerada
Jaylen Brown on Warriors' decision to keep him open: "First time it's ever happened to me. Honestly I was a bit surprised. It took a little bit of adjusting. ... If you want to dare me to shoot, I'll take that, too." Said he thought it was a little disrespectful.

There have been many 50 point wins in NBA history, but not many that were close to that at halftime.

This team is now the first and only team in NBA history to have three 50-point wins in a single season. Not the Russell Celtics, not the Bird Celtics, not the Jordanaires, not The Splash Brothers. The Boston Celtics of the Js.

The Boston Celtics have only had 6 50-point victories in our franchise's history, and three of them came this year.

The game was tied 21-21. We then went on a 119-67 run.

Steph with 4 points on 2-13, 0-9 from 3. What makes this win so stunning is that he could have dropped 50 and they still would have lost. If he had scored his season average of 27.5 it would still have been a blow out, so this is not just a case of "oh, but if Curry had had a good game, well...". Nope, that wouldn't have cut it. And if we had Porzingis it would have been 70. So there...

The Celtics have been OBLITERATING teams during this 11-game win streak

Celtics’ average margin of victory during their 11-game winning streak is 22.1 points per game.

Jared Weiss @JaredWeissNBA

With this 52-point win, the Celtics now have the 4th best net rating in NBA history at ~11.5. 1. 95-96 Bulls: 13.4, 72-10 NBA Champs 2. 96-97 Bulls: 12.0, 69-13, NBA Champs 3. 16-17 Warriors: 11.6, 67-15, NBA Champs 4. 23-24 Celtics: ~11.5, 48-12, ??? 5. 15-16 Spurs: 11.3,…

Sean Grande @SeanGrandePBP
With a ridiculous 1.289 points/possession the last 14 games, the Celtics (13-1) not only have the NBA’s #1 offense, but the most efficient offense in league history. The gap between them and #2 Miami over those 14 is larger than the gap between #2 and #12 Indiana

We had one turnover at the half, 7 for the game. When we take care of the ball like that, and shoot 51% from 3 on 49 attempts there isn't anybody who can beat us. Nobody.

The benches got emptied at 7:16 left in the 3rd, maybe the earliest garbage time I've ever seen. We had a 51 point lead. We won by 52. Good job by the bench mob over extended minutes. You know it's a blow out when Luke is watching from the bench so the newbie can get some reps.

Oshae tries to do too much sometimes. He thinks he's Scotty Pippen. You're not, settle down.

Ok, so now it starts to get harder. We have a 5 game road trip now. It starts Tuesday and ends the following Tuesday. 5 games in a week. @ Cleveland (will be tough, but we should win), @ Denver (always tough, they're good and the air is thin, but we also want payback for them beating us in Boston), @ Phoenix (that will be a shootout), @ Portland and @ Utah. Then we fly home but we have to play Phoenix with only one day off after the trip.

That's the bad news. The good news is that we have some big, fat leads. We knew we needed to pad our leads before we hit this stretch of the schedule and we did.

Celtics-Warriors takeaways: The Jays dominate in statement rout

Celtics-Warriors takeaways: The Jays dominate in statement rout originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

What to Know

Brown burns Warriors early
Tatum strengthens MVP case
Boston's superior depth on display

BOSTON -- The Celtics may or may not have exorcised a few demons Sunday at TD Garden.

In their second home matchup against the Warriors since Golden State won the 2022 NBA Finals on their own floor, the Celtics raced out to a 44-point first-half lead -- their largest in franchise history -- and never looked back en route to a 140-88 win.

Boston dominated from the jump despite playing without Kristaps Porzingis. All-Stars Jaylen Brown (29 points) and Jayson Tatum (27 points, five assists) led the way for the Celtics, who shot 51 percent (25 for 49) from 3-point range to dismantle a Warriors team that had won 11 of its previous 13 games.

Stephen Curry scored just four points on 2 of 13 shooting and went 0-for-9 from 3-point range. He and Klay Thompson didn't play in the entire second half, while C's head coach Joe Mazzulla pulled his starters midway through the third quarter of the 52-point win, which made Boston the first team in NBA history with three wins of 50-plus in one season.

The Celtics will take an 11-game winning streak into Cleveland on Tuesday to face the surging Cavaliers, who are the Eastern Conference's No. 2 seed with a 39-20 record. Before that matchup, here are three takeaways from Sunday's victory:

Jaylen makes Warriors pay early

Draymond Green's attempt to play mind games with Jaylen Brown backfired, to say the least.

Green essentially dared Brown to shoot in the first quarter, inexplicably giving the All-Star several feet of space in drop coverage. Brown responded by burying 5 of 9 3-pointers in the frame en route to 19 first-quarter points.

Brown entered Sunday as Boston's leading first-quarter scorer (7.1 points per game), which makes Green's defensive strategy even more head-scratching. Brown used the apparent disrespect as fuel, firing up the TD Garden crowd as the Celtics raced out to a 44-22 lead.

Tatum bolsters MVP case

Ex-Celtics big man Kevin Garnett said Tatum could make a "loud statement" in the NBA MVP race Sunday. Mission accomplished, Jayson.

On his 26th birthday, Tatum followed Brown's 19-point first quarter with a 20-point explosion in the second quarter, hitting 6 of 7 shots (3-for-3 3PT) while adding three assists and a steal.

Tatum and Brown (47 points first-half points combined) outscored the Warriors (38 points) by themselves through two quarters. Tatum's fingerprints were all over this blowout victory; he played a key role in limiting Curry on the defensive end and finished with a team-best plus-40 plus-minus.

Tatum is still fifth on the MVP ladder at most sportsbooks, but he's now outdueled Luka Doncic and Curry in back-to-back games as the engine that drives the NBA's best team. If Tatum stays hot this week in matchups against the Cavs and reigning champion Denver Nuggets, expect his MVP stock to rise.

Depth charge

The Celtics have come a long way since the 2022 Finals -- particularly in the secondary scoring department.

While Brown and Tatum were the stars of the show, this was still a team effort for Boston: Derrick White contributed 14 points on 5 of 6 shooting with a team-high eight assists, while Al Horford hit 3 of 5 shots for seven points while adding four assists.

Payton Pritchard (19 points on 8 of 12 shooting) and Sam Hauser (12 points; 4 for 9) both hit double figures off the bench, as well.

This game was in hand by halftime, but the Celtics' reserves still outscored Golden State by nine in the third quarter, a testament to their improved depth since June 2022 and a good sign as they eye another deep postseason run in 2024.

What happens when a team with a 7 game win streak encounters a team with a 10 game win streak?
Seven come eleven baby!

What a beautiful game to watch. Our starters in a scant 20+ minutes accounted for 84 points. The entire Warrior team only had 88!

Jaylen's 360 degree assist to Jayson for a wide open 3 was literally incomparable. I have never seen that done before.

Clearly, I have no idea what I'm talking about.  This whole scene is starting to remind me of growing up in Raleigh and being in elementary school on the playground at recess.  One of your "friends" would come up to you, grab your right arm and pull it behind your back and lift until you screamed "Uncle"!!

That's the position in which Boston has the NBA World right now, myself included.  Call me Doubting DB or whatever you like up to this point, I'm on the ground with my face in the dirt and the Celtics are administering that fatal elementary school tactic on me.

There is your almost (since KP was out) awesome display of a Fully Operational Death Star.  Dang!!  Somewhere on this site, probably the pre-game thread, I think I jokingly said I would like for this game to be over by halftime.  In other words, I typed it but didn't really believe it could happen. Well shut my mouth!!

Quick Draymond Green alert.  There was one questionable foul that should have been more than a common foul on Draymond that looked an awful lot like a swing warm-up, similar to the one that put him into indefinite suspension.  But the refs are not going to end his career unless it's just so obvious that a village idiot could make the correct call.  He's also spending more and more time yammering at the refs.  But I digress.

Where do you begin?!  Except maybe just chill and watch the whole game a second time.  This was clearly the tale of two really great but different halves.  First half the starters went bananas.  Second half the bench basically finished out the last 20 minutes and got some great, unimpeded play time together.  Doogie and Pritch leading the way.  Confidentially, Pritchard is a nuisance.  He was all over the place snagging rebounds, making lay-ups amongst the trees, 3-bombing it.  Doogie was just nailing 3's like in practice.  Tillman is a bruiser.  Another nice pick up, Brad!  Mykhailuk, Brisset, Kornet and Jerry Springer all got some well deserved PT and delivered.

Of course, the press/announcers never ceases to amaze me.  After this game got out of hand, then all the GSW excuses started coming out.  Curry with bursitis, Clay now back to starting after coming off the bench from being a starter, Draymond's suspension, GSW having this road trip where they played 10 games in 6 days all going to 3OT and playing two games Sunday morning before taking us on at 3:30 that same afternoon....

GSW can take some solace home with them in that they at least won the 4th, 26-25.

Truly an amazing, historical game by the Celtics.  I have no other words to describe what I just saw except I'm going to watch that game again today!!  You should, too!!

Alright.  On to what I'm going to call the biggest, stiffest test of the season...

Hi,
Yes, that was total butt wooping. But the more important thing - Celtics played excellent defense in the first half (didn't pay much attention in the 3rd and 4th quarters).
Hopefully, they will play it come May and June.

Anyone see Steph’s interview after the game?  It was on google this morning. Sounded a little ticked off,  did not mind rubbing the “who’s your Daddy” quotes in the Celtics face, what did he think would happen if they started winning?  Of course this is a grudge game, every game against them is a grudge game.  Poor baby, cry cry cry

Rosalie,

He also said that the Celtics were doing to the league what they used to do to the league, and that the Celtics were the best team in the league.  Considering how much we hear fans of WC teams trying to diminish our boys by claiming they're just feasting on the bottom feeders in the weaker EC that's pretty good validation from a player who has played against every WC team this year.

They got humiliated.  I would expect Curry etal to be ticked off.  I would lose respect for them if they weren't.  Losing, especially like that, especially with the awful game he had, is supposed to hurt.

I read that Klay is experiencing a wicked bad case of "feels" towards the coaching staff ever since he was relegated to the bench.

Then they reinserted him back into the starting unit for this important game. That probably didn't help him with his 'tude.

Changes coming?

Honestly, I can't get too excited over this win. Remember back in January the Celtics played 5 games in 7 days and the last game was against the Bucks at Milwaukee and they had a couple of days to rest. Well they blew us out and the game was over at the half. Sound familiar. We played great, but the Warriors were on the last game of a long road trip. This one, just like our game verses the bucks, is on the schedule makers. Not saying I didn't enjoy the beatdown.

The Celtics continue to set franchise records this season.

They scored 82 points in the first half. That was an eye popping achievement. You have to take a deep dive into Celtics history to find a better scoring first half. I figured it would have to be our highest scoring game ever and it was.

February 27, 1959 The Celtics beat the Lakers 173-139. The Celtics scored 83 points in the first half of that game and followed that up with a 90 point second half. Keep in mind that there was no 3 point shot.

The record that was set yesterday was their margin of victory. The Celtics have now won 3 games this season by a total of 50 points or more.

I am not the least bit surprised that Boston won all 3 homes games including the GSW dismantling.

We are now 60 games in and the results all point in one directions, so consider these points of reference:

Best NBA Record at 48-12
Best Home Record 29-3
Best Road Record 19-9 (Percentage)
Best Record vs sub .,500 teams 22-1
Best record vs .500 or better teams 28-11
Best Record in 10 point games 28-4
Best point differential 11.4

gyso,

He's 34 years old and is in the last year of his contract, getting paid > $43M. If he cannot handle coming off the bench now he's going to struggle with that next year when he's 35 too, and NOBODY is going to pay him anything anywhere near $43M. At 37.8% from 3 that is the worst number of his career, and he's not getting younger. He can start on a shitty team, he'll make decent money (albeit not anything near $43M), but if he wants to have a shot at another Championship he's going to have to come off the bench. So, yeah, change is coming whether Klay wants it or not.

Actually there is a difference, when we lost to Bucks badly, that was second game of b2b and the previous game was an OT thriller vs Timberwolves. GS had a day off before they faced us….

I did too as I am sure most Celtics fans really enjoyed the show. It was a spectacular showing!

The Celtics however will not allow themselves to fly over their skis. They refuse to get too excited about any game once the next game becomes their focus.

It's on to Cleveland (BB)
