BASEBALL Rule question? Empty BASEBALL Rule question?

Post by beat Fri Jun 01, 2012 11:14 am

The other day Marcus had a game this happened.

Situation: bases loaded 1 out. Their batter hits a fly to center. Runners on second and third are tagging. Ball is caught (second out) and thrown into the infield. Both runners advanced runner from third scored. Marcus moved over to back up a potential throw to second and noticed the runner on second left too soon. Said something to the coach and an appeal play was made properly to second base. The umpire then called the runner (now standing on third out for leaving too soon).

Does/should the run count on the runner whom scored from third on that play?

I now know the answer but thought I would throw this out there for our sportsminded group.

BASEBALL Rule question? Empty Re: BASEBALL Rule question?

beat,

If I read your scenario correctly the run scores.

There was no force out (there is no force on a ball that is caught) and the appeal and subsequent 3rd out were recorded after the run crossed the plate. If I'm thinking of the correct rule it's called a "time play."

NYCelt:

If 2 or more people are involved in the time play, is it also a "time share"?

MD!

NYCelt

The runner left too soon from second and is liable to be put out unless he returns to second base, he is in some ways FORCED to go back.

That was my line of thinking anyway till I read the rules and researced it a bit.

Once the ball was caught by the centerfielder there is no longer any force play at any of the bases. Even though the runner on second left too soon he is not compelled to return and could have even been tagged out at third while standing on the base should the play have happened that way. Key is it is no longer a force play!

You are correct and the run counts!

This made the score 6-1 at the time in the top of the 7th and had no effect on the outcome.

Interesting ... i don't really like that rule (I believe it should be consider forced) but looked it up myself and it appears that's correct.

Heck I spent the better part of 2 hours trying to find a rule that covered this in the MLB rule book.
