The team option is a nice add-on. If the Celtics don't want to keep him, they can include Randolph in a trade. They can use his salary to add with others and the receiving team can just not pick up the option. The receiving team gets to dump a little salary and the Celtics can get a better player.

The Celtics did that with Sean Williams last summer and ended up with Courtney Lee.

T-Will also got a team option (I believe), but DJ White didn't? If not, I wonder why?
