Report: Chris Wilcox Recovering, Wants Return to Boston Celtics
Yahoo! Contributor Network Justin Haskins 58 minutes ago

COMMENTARY | Forward Chris Wilcox has spent the last two seasons struggling with an enlarged aorta and the effects of the surgery that sought to correct it.

Wilcox entered the Boston Celtics' training camp prior to the 2012-2013 season only six months after the procedure, and as the grueling season displayed, he returned to the NBA too early.

Wilcox managed to average only 4.2 points per game with 3.0 rebounds, the two lowest averages he has put up since his rookie season in 2002-2003 with the Los Angeles Clippers. His lackluster play also didn't inspire much confidence from former coach Doc Rivers, who played Wilcox an average of only 13.6 minutes per game in a season with a major shortage of big men.

When Wilcox came to Boston in 2011, he had solidified himself as a more than serviceable bench contributor for the Detroit Pistons, averaging 7.4 points and 4.8 rebounds on 58.1-percent shooting in an average of 17.5 minutes per game in 2010-2011. After 28 games in 2011-2012, however, the complications with his aorta became too difficult to play with and required surgery.

More than a year later, Wilcox finally believes he is back in top form and admits that last season was certainly not his best.

According to the Boston Globe's Gary Washburn, Wilcox would like to rejoin the Celtics for the 2013-2014 season, which would be his third consecutive year with the team. But he made it clear that it was unlikely the team had any interest him. Wilcox is likely correct. Although the Celtics could benefit from the presence of the veteran Wilcox in a young frontcourt that includes Jared Sullinger and rookie Kelly Olynyk, it's hard to imagine the Celtics signing Wilcox when they already need to find a way to trim the roster before the season starts.

It's hard not to root for Chris Wilcox to find a home. He is one of those players that works hard every night, goes for every rebound, and will even throw down a nice dunk or two. By all accounts, he is a great teammate and would be a nice addition for any team needing help at power forward next season. If teams can look past his heart problems and Wilcox can prove he is better shape this season than he was last year, expect him to be signed before the start of the season, possibly during the preseason.

My Take: Unfortunately for him, the C's have been trying to trim salary, and his seems to be the most expendable.

KJ,

They've known he wants back for a long time, to get his Bird Rights, if nothing else.  They knew about it before they signed Faverani.

A correction, which is to be expected given who the author is, the Celtics do not need to trim their roster.  We are at 15.

1.  Rondo
2.  Pressey
3.  Bradley
4.  Lee
5.  Crawford
6.  Brooks
7.  Green, Jeff
8.  Wallace
9.  Sully
10. Hump
11. Kelly
12. Faverani
13. Bass
14. Bogans
15. Greene, Donte

If Danny cuts Donte Greene, as I expect him to, then not only will we not have to cut players as Justin Haskins claims, we will in fact have an open slot.  Justin Haskins' claim to fame is that he has been "following Boston sports obsessively for 10 years".  Let's hope he can count to ten better than he can count to 15.
