Coming from OKC for a 2nd round pick as part of the Lee-Bayless deal.

Huh?

Another undersized 4 (6'7", no less)?

I say, bye-bye Brandon Bass. Another salary dump coming.

Gomes Coming Back To Boston Empty Re: Gomes Coming Back To Boston

Ok, a little more clarification here.

Gomes' contract is not-guaranteed. If this deal happens TODAY, as it is expected to, then he can be waived by Boston.

Gomes expected to be part of C's swap

As ESPN.com's Marc Stein noted, the Courtney Lee-Jerryd Bayless trade is expected to grow to a three-team swap that should see Oklahoma City Thunder send Ryan Gomes to Boston (and some second-round draft picks will fill out the deal). Gomes, a fan-favorite during his time in Boston before being shipped out as part of the Kevin Garnett trade package, is a nonguaranteed deal and will likely be waived. Boston has an open roster spot, but likely does not desire to pay the seventh-year forward with an already crowded frontcourt. The swap must be finalized by today in order for Gomes (and all others on nonguaranteed deals) to be waived by Tuesday's 5 p.m. deadline in order to allow sufficient time for him to clear waivers. In essence, Oklahoma City is clearing some much-needed cap space by jumping into the deal and Boston eats the minimal amount guaranteed to Gomes for the first part of the season (likely getting a second-round pick for their troubles).

So, we pay a few bucks for Gomes' salary and get a 2nd round pick out of it. Since he's going to be waived his salary won't affect the cap. Danny has had luck with 2nd round picks (Big Baby, Leon Powe and, yes, Ryan Gomes).

More draft picks to play with. Trader Danny is in gear. This looks like another good deal for us.

It looks like Boston gave up a 2016 2nd round pick in this trade and has already waived Gomes.

So, the deal from our perspective is

Lee + 2nd rounder for Bayless.

Hmm.

Bayless was a lottery pick, #11.
His career 3pt fg% is 34.5%.
His career fg% is 41%.  So, he doesn't shoot much better from 2 than from 3 (43.6% from 2, to be precise).
His career assist-to-TO ratio is a smidge better than 2:1.  That's definitely ok.  By comparison, Crawford's career assist-to-TO ratio is 1.67:1, but his ratio this year is a VERY healthy 2.54:1.

Bayless is a streaky shooter.  If we're looking for instant offense from the point guard position we can put Crawford or Bayless in and there will be no shortage of shots heading towards the rim.

This year:

Bayless is taking 13.2fgas/36mpg while Crawford is taking 13.3fgas/36mpg. Bradley, by comparison, is taking 15.1fgas/36mpg.
Bayless is shooting 38%fg% while Crawford is shooting 43%. Bradley, 45%.
Bayless is shooting 42% from 2 while Crawford is shooting 48% from 2. Bradley, 46%.
Bayless is shooting 30fg% from 3 while Crawford is shooting 33% from 3. Bradley, 41%.
Bayless is shooting 78.9% from the line while Crawford is shooting 85.3% from the line. Bradley, 71%.

This is just a snapshot, to put in perspective where Bayless was in Memphis this year vs our current starting guards.  As we've seen this year in Crawford, history is no predictor of future performance.  Put Bayless into a different system, with different teammates, and he might be very different. If we go strictly based upon stats season-to-date though, Crawford's starting job is safe (at least, until Rondo comes back). The only similarity Bayless has to Bradley on defense is that both of their names begin with "B".

This has not been one of Bayless' better years, which is why Memphis didn't feel bad about unloading him.  He has never been a good shooter, though.  His high water mark was 2010-2011, when he shot 42.9% from the field. Yet, Danny loves this guy, and Danny definitely has an eye for talent.

He has been a Celtic-killer on more than one occasion because when he goes off, he really goes off. A shorter version of DeMar DeRozan, who is quite a handful when he's feeling it.

He is also, not to be belittled, another expiring contract.
