Veteran assistant coach Ron Adams is set to join the Golden State Warriors after spending one season with the Boston Celtics.

Adams interviewed with the Warriors this past week and decided Sunday to return to his home state and a region his basketball career took shape. Adams played collegiately and started his coaching career at Fresno Pacific University.

Adams served as Boston's top assistant for first-year coach Brad Stevens last season.

“I am very happy for Ron for him to have this opportunity to coach in his home-state," said Stevens. "We all wish Ron nothing but the best, and appreciate all that he did during his year in Boston.”

Stevens, 66, is a highly respected assistant who has also coached for the Spurs, Bucks, Bulls, and Thunder in two decades in the NBA.

Adams is expected to serve as a top assistant alongside first-year coach Steve Kerr with the Warriors. Golden State had also talked with David Blatt, who recently agreed to become head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Rapid Reaction: Adams was a steadying presence as Stevens made the transition to the NBA game and players flocked to him for advice at both ends of the court (particularly his renowned shooting expertise). Stevens said last month that he was hopeful to keep his staff intact, but wouldn't prevent any of his assistants from seeking opportunities that intrigued them. It's a lateral move here for Adams, but given his age, it allows him the chance to wind down his coaching days in a region he's familiar with. And he'll be working with some skilled young players; good luck to the rest of the league if he's able to further hone Steph Curry's touch.

The Celtics will have to fill Adams spot. Stevens' staff maintains assistants Jay Larranaga, Micah Shrewsberry, Walter McCarty, and Jamie Young. Larranaga, who has spent the past two seasons on the Boston bench, interviewed for the Celtics' vacancy before Stevens was hired and talked with the Philadelphia 76ers for their opening last summer.

Which one of these current assistants, Jay Larranaga, Micah Shrewsberry, Walter McCarty, or Jamie Young, is the "bigs" coach?  If the answer is "none of the above", then I can see a position for Cowens on this team.

I think the Celtics have a very thin coaching staff and need to bolster the staff with a big's coach.   Where is coach Cliff now?

Ron Adams also was their shooting coach. They could also use a shooting coach.

Big loss here, big loss. Good luck to him. I wish him nothing but the best.

They definitely need BOTH shooting an big man coach.  Whether they'll spring for both remains to be seen.  Getting a big man coach who can double as a shooting coach is pretty much of an oxymoron.

Good luck, Ron.
