Remember Stephon Marbury? The former No. 4 overall pick never quite lived up to his promise over his 13 years in the NBA, ending his career in Boston with 88 points in 414 minutes with the Celtics.
He also ate vaseline on camera, threatened Knicks coach Isiah Thomas on an airplane flight and gave this wild interview on New York’s Channel 4.
Wednesday morning, Marbury posted a screenshot of a tweet by the English-language arm of the Chinese CCTV news saying he had been named a “role model” by the Beijing government for 2014. Further, he is the sole athlete and non-Chinese on the list.
According to Wikipedia (for what it’s worth), in his five years playing in China, Marbury has been a Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragon, a Beijing Duck, and something called a Foshan Dralion which, yes, is half-dragon, half-lion and immediately the best mascot in sports.
According to this New York Times article, Marbury has finally found peace in the Far East, and it shows in his game.
