Celtics Will Be ‘Very, Very Active’ In Offseason, Assistant GM Says

If the Boston Celtics don’t make any major trades or free-agent signings this summer, it won’t be for a lack of trying.

The Celtics plan to be busy in the offseason and have plenty of assets to make substantial roster changes with the hopes of competing for an NBA championship in the near future.

“We’ve got a lot of opportunities to do something significant this summer,” Celtics assistant general manager Mike Zarren told Steve Bulpett of The Boston Herald. “There’s going to be a lot of good free agents. We could move up in the draft. We’ve got assets of every kind that other teams like.

“It’s too early to really know what’s going to happen — the lottery hasn’t even happened yet — but we’ll be very, very active in all phases of front office work this summer.”

The Celtics have two first-round picks in the 2015 NBA Draft. They also have multiple first-round picks in future drafts, which gives them plenty of flexibility in the trade market. A couple of those first-round selections are from the Brooklyn Nets, and based on the direction that franchise is trending, those picks could become quite valuable.

The upcoming class of free agents could be one of the strongest in years. Star players such as LaMarcus Aldridge, Kevin Love, DeAndre Jordan, Goran Dragic, Greg Monroe and Paull Millsap all could hit the market.

Boston hasn’t been a destination for marquee free agents in the past, but the ability to play for a brilliant head coach in Brad Stevens on a team with many young, talented players with a bright future should help make the Celtics an attractive option for players on the market.

The Celtics are in a much better position as far as having quality assets than they were in 2007 before acquiring Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. Celtics president Danny Ainge has plenty of options to consider over the next few months, and we know he isn’t afraid to make a bold move.

MY NOTE:  The Celtics interviewed Willie Cauley-Stein at the NBA Combine this week.  You can only interview 18 players.  There is no way WCS will drop to 16, therefore...it stands to reason...or is plausible...or at least somewhat cogent...that maybe they have some cards up their sleeves.  Teams that want a player of ours and will take our #16 and that player (plus who knows what else?) for drafting WCS and trading him to us.  All speculation, of course, but why would you interview someone you have zero shot at, zero, unless you had a Plan B that might include getting him? You could consume your 18 interviews just talking to the 3-5 players surrounding each of our 4 draft picks this year. Easily, you could use most of them on the players projected to go between, say, #12 - #19 and between #23 - #30.

Or maybe Mike Zarren didn't get the memo from last year saying "make no bold statements this year".

Does anyone know what types of hors d'oeuvre the Celtics serve potential draftees?  And are they subjected to circumcision inspections?  I swear, those are the only two things we don't know about the draft.

Bob,

16 & 28 should get us up to around #12.

we have three likely firsts next season and 4 seconds I think.

a first and second next year added to both this years first and we are talking maybe 6-8 range?

lots of options.

just need to find a dance partner.
