Did anybody catch the Knicks vs Lakers game tonite? The draft is such a crapshoot, I wanted to check out Porzingis, he was okay, he didn't try to do alot, he had a couple nice moves. The player that was exposed was DeAngelo Russell, had no speed/burst, no shot creating ability, no creating for others ability....was shocking how bad he was against not particularly great defenders, though Knicks overall were hustling as should be. Whats he gonna do against Avery Bradley, Smart and Rozier? those guys will feast on him. Russell finished with 1 assist and 8 turnovers, barely played in the 4th quarter, guess theres a big difference between the SL and the Big 10.

I caught parts of the game. Porzingis is going to be a great player. I never understood the D'Angelo hype. He's going to get destroyed defensively, and he can fairly easily be forced into contested long two point jump shots, which he doesn't seem to hit at a high rate. His FT% was only 70%, far from Curry level, or even above average for a guard.

I'm a fan of Jerian Grant, and would have been happy if the Celtics drafted him at 16, but Rozier will be a better defender against point guards, and can get into the lane easier than Grant.

I suspect Knicks fans are increasingly excited about their draft picks.

Grant had alot of really good plays, he totally outplayed the 2nd pick in the draft, its early, but off this game, kids not ready for primetime, his last 2 turnovers were really BAD. On one he was face up and took too long to gather himself as he tried to make a move, called for traveling. On the last one he drove under the basket with no place to go, jumped and threw the pass outside to nobody, mercifully they took him out after that. DeAngelo could be a colossal failure for that team, as I also think hes too slow to defend points and too unathletic to defend the 2-3's at the next level.

on First Take Stephen A and Skip Bayless ripping Jim Buss, Lakers organization and pick of D Russell....Skip saying this kid doesn't have explosiveness to dominate at next level, and hes had 20 turnovers in 3 games.

First of all, let's remember we're talking about Stephen Asshole Smith and Skip Clueless, a guy who admitted he talks about players without watching any games.

Having said that, drafting an underwhelming Russell might be the best thing that ever happened for Laker fans long-term since it will almost certainly mean the end of Dim Buss...There is talk of the Lakers trying to trade Julius Randle, last year's #7 pick. If you pick #7 and #2 and you come away with not one but two el bustos, you're in trouble.

Unless your name is Sam Hinkie. Then you're considered a mad scientist. One out of two ain't bad. He's no scientist.

I think your selling Skip short on this one, he named 3 specific games that he watched every minute of, 2 being Wisconsin and Michigan St, I can't remember the other one, that he was underwhelmed by D Russell at the collegiate level. I was shocked when Lakers passed on Okafor, as at worst he will be a double-double guy. Julius Randle also looked like crap, he was repeatedly trying to overpower players defending him, not gonna work at this level, he couldn't do a thing. If players look this bad in SL, thats scary as the real players show up in 2-3 months.

cow,

Apparently, ripping the Lakers is in vogue in Laker land.

News, Notes from Summer League Monday: Lakers fans boo their team
Kurt Helin Jul 14, 2015, 1:12 AM EDT

LAS VEGAS — Monday in Las Vegas and nothing has slowed down — this is Vegas, baby.

There was a full slate of games at the NBA Summer League, and the effort was still there, with players trying to make teams, impress scouts, and put on a show. Here is some of what we saw (notes are from Kurt Helin and Sean Highkin).

• Lakers fans again filled the Thomas & Mack to see their young stars, but this time they booed them after a brutal first quarter — the Lakers had more turnovers than points (seven to five) and shot 2-of-17, trailing the Knicks by 15 after one. The Lakers got back into it and made it interesting in the end, but their Summer League team largely remains the Jordan Clarkson show. (KH)

The Lakers have potential but a long way to go, look for more on the Lakers tomorrow on PBT.

Dim Buss makes Paul Gaston look like a competent owner. I feel sorry for the Lakers as they suffer through poor management decisions which are hurting the team's performance terribly. Oh well, the Celtics went through such a tough spot in the 90's. Now it's the Lakers turn. Russell over Okafor, really? What genius ran that draft?

Porzingis or Turner would have probably been even better picks than Okafor for the Lakers. Randle isn't good enough to cross PF off your draft needs.

I really think Russell was drafted because of his perceived marketing value, aka good looks, charm, flashy play style, and ability to sell tickets and products.

We know that LaMarcus Aldridge came away from his meeting with the Lakers complaining that they talked about marketing for the entire first hour of the meeting before the basketball people talked, as an afterthought.

Player of the Day:

Norman Powell
Norman Powell
Norman Powell Toronto -- Powell has been the Raptor's best and most consistent SL player by a long shot, and he was a guy that slipped to the back half of the 2nd round in the draft, despite being a first round value. He's played with tremendous energy, getting by opponents off the dribble, hitting floaters, as well as knocking in his jumpshots at a good clip, not to mention getting to the line. The physical rookie's 19 points versus Houston came on an efficient 7-11 shooting. He had spectacular ally oop finish at the beginning of the 2nd half, and even had a perimeter block to end the first half. With high level defensive ability, and underrated offensive skills, It's hard to imagine Powell not making the Raptors after such a standout string of games in Las Vegas. Teams would be lining up to sign him.

Biggest Surprise:

Bryce Dejean Jones New Orleans -- Jones broke out for a game high 26 points, playing in front of his former college home crowd of Las Vegas. He was 8-12 from the floor and got hot from 3 dropping 4-7, helping the Pelicans top the Nets. Jones went undrafted but had previously been a player who was viewed as a possible first rounder going into his final season at Iowa State. Off court issues derailed his draft hopes, but big performances like the one he had Monday Afternoon could help him find a spot on a roster.

Biggest Disappointment:

Tyus Jones Minnesota -- Struggled in both offense and running the point. Jones is a heady player who was the catalyst to Duke's national title with his inspirational play against Wisconsin in the closing minutes. But against NBA athletes, so far he has struggled. This may not have even been his roughest game, as he had no points in the opener against the Lakers. Against Utah Jones shot 2-6 for six points. His 1 assist to 4 turnovers was what stood out and overall in three games he has just 3 assists to 9 turnovers.

Top Performers:

Seth Curry New Orleans -- A non-draft pick FA doesn't usually get strong consideration for SL MVP, but Seth Curry is stating a case for the award with his third straight 20 point game. He once again showed that even when he's struggling from 3, he can be a dangerous scorer. He shot 1-6 from 3 and has actually been horrendous in all three games, 4-22 overall. yet, he's getting to the line and has been very good in the mid-range. He's averaging 25 ppg and New Orleans is undefeated. Now he just needs to raise his overall FG%.

Draft Watch

Karl Anthony Towns -- Towns had 14 and 10 and showed some positive signs. However his shooting from the perimeter was not good going 4-15. He looked a bit frustrated at the end of the game and obviously has a ways to go before he can be depended upon at the NBA level.

DAngelo Russell LA Lakers -- Continues to struggle with turnovers as he had 8 more, and shooting from outside 0-2 shooting. He had 8 pts on 3-7 shooting but again showed off his creative vision and passing with behind the back and flashy looks to open teammates. It hasn't been a great SL so far, but he's very young and has plenty of time to correct the sloppiness and adjust to the higher level of speed.

Kristaps Porzingis New York -- Didn't put up a huge stat line (9 pts, 3 boards, on 3/5 from floor and 3/9 from the line) but made some very nice plays including a drive in which he used the glass off the pull up and was fouled for an and 1. Showed off some very nice footwork, and James Worthy had very positive things to say about Kristaps comparing him to a Kevin Durant/Dirk Nowitzki type. He looked pretty comfortable fighting on the block with Larry Nance Jr, granted Nance is not as big and strong as your typical NBA post player. Despite being booed on draft night, even Knicks fans seem to have begun to warm up to Zinger. At one point had a very nice two handed block on Clarkson at the rim, but got called for a (bad) foul.

Willie Cauley Stein Sacramento -- Cauley-Stein has fared about as well as one could expect, showing great energy and scoring when given opportunities. He had 13 and 8, going 5-10 from the floor, in less than 18 minutes of action. The "Kings of the Summer League" got their first win. The entire organization seems to be in Sin City attempting to create a family environment and smooth over the bad publicity and dissension that is permeating the organization. But in all honesty, it's hard to imagine this group being anything but a disfunctional family.

Emmanuel Mudiay Denver -- After a game in which scouts were raving about him, Mudiay came back to Earth in the Nuggets third game, shooting just 4-13 for 10 points. However they pulled out the 3 point victory and Mudiay had a 8 to 5 A/TO ratio showing solid decision making running the team.

Justise Winslow Miami -- Winslow is coming off an apparent injury and played just 12 minutes hitting his only shot, a 3 pointer. Winslow had a decent showing in the Orlando SL and should see more action going forward with 3 games left to play for the Heat in Vegas.

Trey Lyles Utah -- Another lottery pick with a solid though not standout showing. He went for 13 and 9 but struggled some from the field hitting 5-14.

Rashad Vaughn Milwaukee -- Vaughn was a bit of a surprise going 17th in the draft to Milwaukee. He was one of the better shooters available and though his outside shot hasn't been hitting thus far in SL, he's been good. He led the Bucks in scoring with 18 on 8-16 shooting, though he only made one of five from 3.

Jerian Grant New York -- Had a better showing than fellow rookie Russell, going for 8 assists and 10 points. He's got experience and physical maturity over DLo and it showed in this contest.

Rondae Hollis Jefferson -- On the bright side, RHJ went for a team high 18 points and shimmied his way to 8-10 from the line. On the negative side he shot just 5-14 from the floor. He's very good when he can get in and find shots near the basket. Anything outside the paint is an adventure however, as he has a very unreliable jumpshot.

Kevon Looney Golden State -- Looney had his first positive game of the SL. Looney had 13 and 7 on 6-11 shooting for the World champs, after two disappointing efforts.

Montrezl Harrell Houston -- Harrell went for 15 and 7 for the Rockets. He had a very nice pump fake up and under, and 1 in which he got Jordan Bachynski to bite and foul him.

Others:

Jordan Clarkson LA Lakers -- After two tremendous games, Clarkson had a difficult third game going for 13 points but shooting just 3-14 from the floor. The Lakers lost by 10 and LA couldn't get much out of their young nucleus of Clarkson, Randle and Russell.

Julius Randle LA Lakers -- Has not had a great SL performance thus far with one DNP and two clunkers. He shot just 2-8 in the Lakers 10 point loss to the Knicks. He looked aggressive in trying to create offense off the dribble but seems to be too predictable with his offense and gets out of control on drives and either forces up wild shots or bowls into defenders, creating offensive fouls. He's still coming off a foot injury and looks rusty, but he's obviously a physical specimen with great potential, who just needs to adjust his game to the speed and skill of the NBA.

If I was a Laker fan I couldn't express how pissed I'd be as a second pick in the draft is very rare and it can make or break a franchise. Right now Okafor looks like the second coming or a poor mans version of Tim Duncan at worst and Russell looks like a 6'4" version of Evan Turner, only not even as good. Buss picked Russell, a supposed playmaker because he assumed he was gonna sign LeMarcus Aldridge, but when Aldridge got there all they were prepared to discuss was marketing, nobody there could talk hoops or basketball, the whole staff wasn't prepared?

What an amazing performance by so many and especially by MT.

I can hardly wait until next July when Boston signs Joachim Noah to a long term deal. What a team we'll be then. Rock on!

The championship round of the Samsung NBA Summer League 2015 tips off on Wednesday, July 15, in Las Vegas at the Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
The Toronto Raptors earned the top seed, while the Boston Celtics (2), Denver Nuggets (3), New Orleans Pelicans (4) and New York Knicks (5) comprise the top five seeds. The Sacramento Kings, the reigning NBA Summer League champions, are seeded 21st and will face the 12th seeded Golden State Warriors, the inaugural NBA Summer League champions, at 3:30 p.m. PT in defense of their title.
Tournament action tips off on Wednesday, July 15 when the ninth-seeded Houston Rockets take on the 24th seeded Milwaukee Bucks at 1 p.m. PT at the COX Pavilion and continues with seven more games featuring other teams seeded 10-23. Thursday's slate features an additional eight games, including the top-seeded Raptors facing the winner of the 17th-seeded Chicago Bulls or the 16th-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers, the second-seeded Celtics taking on the winner of the matchup between the 18th-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves and the 15th-seeded Portland Trail Blazers and the third-seeded Nuggets taking on the winner of the 19th-seeded Miami Heat and the 14th-seeded Atlanta Hawks.
Each of the 24 participating teams has competed in three games since the event tipped off on July 10, with the results of those games determining the 1-24 seedings in the single elimination tournament. Each team will compete in at least two more contests in Las Vegas - a minimum of one game in the single elimination tournament and then either in a consolation game or in the next round in the championship bracket.
Teams seeded 9-24 will compete on Wednesday, July 15, with the winners of those contests advancing in the tournament to play Thursday, July 16, against teams seeded 1-8, who earned a first-round "bye." Teams that lose a game on either Wednesday or Thursday will play on Friday, July 17. The single elimination championship tournament resumes on Saturday, July 18, with a champion being crowned on Monday, July 20.
Seeding for the tournament was determined by won-loss records, with ties being broken using quarter-points and then point differential.
NBA TV's comprehensive coverage of Samsung NBA Summer League 2015 continues live from both the Thomas and Mack Center and COX Pavilion including the championship game. All games during the 2015 event will continue to be streamed live on nba.com and available on the Game Time App. This is a subscription based service.

rambone,

Thanks for the schedule. My laptop is dead in the water (actually it is in the Geeksquad's hands over at BestBuy). I am using my old desktop PC, which was scheduled for a complete do-over at BestBuy, due to its constant need to go all "blue-screen" on me at random times.

I can use the info you provided to make the next Game On! thread.

cowens,

You must be watching a different Okafor than I have been watching.
Okafor has put up some numbers in summer league but his lack of athleticism and laziness is being shown already.
Okafor had his shot blocked 5 times yesterday and has been blocked more than any other player this summer.
He is a below the rim center with no drive, which is not appealing to me.
Yes, Okafor has talents. All of the top players do.

Towns and Russell both have gotten off to slow starts in the summer league.
Do I expect that to continue? Not at all.
If Russell puts up 20 tonight with 7 assists and 2 turnovers will the Lakers now be geniuses?
FYI, Russell is 6'5".

You put a lot of weight in summer league basketball.
I don't at all. It's part of the process.

The Lakers didn't only talk about marketing with Aldridge.
It's hard to sell a player just on basketball when you won 21 games, have virtually rookies at the guard positions, Kobe who is ending his career and a guy in Randle who plays the same position as Aldridge.
