Injury gave Kelly Olynyk's season the cold shoulder

WALTHAM, Mass. -- It's easy to forget now, but before DeAndre Jordan crashed down on Kelly Olynyk's right shoulder in the final game before the All-Star break, the third-year big man was one of the Boston Celtics' most impactful players this season.

No Celtics regular had a better on-court net rating than Olynyk did through 55 games, standing at plus-6.4 points per 100 possessions while balancing a 102.9 offensive rating with a 96.5 defensive mark. Olynyk and Boston's bench mob were a big part of the team's 13-5 run to close out the first half of the year -- a surge that put Boston in position to challenge for a top seed in the second half of the season.

The shoulder injury initially didn't seem like much of a concern and Olynyk trekked to his native Toronto to take part in festivities at All-Star weekend. A couple days later he was in Los Angeles seeking a second opinion on a shoulder that failed to improve. Thanks to a forgiving schedule, Olynyk missed only 12 games but over a month's worth of time before returning on March 16.

Over the final 15 games of the regular season, Olynyk's on-court net rating dipped to plus-0.9 (103.1 offensive, 102.2 defensive). Part of that decline can be chalked up to Jae Crowder's ankle injury, which forced Boston to shuffle its rotation. Olynyk's individual production dipped slightly, too, from pre-All-Star (10.1 points on 46.1 percent shooting) to post (9.3 points on 43.1 percent shooting). The 4.1 percent dip in his 3-point percentage was maybe most noteworthy and suggests he never quite found his shooting stroke in the aftermath of the injury.

The playoffs were an unmitigated disaster for Olynyk. He aggravated the shoulder injury in Game 1 and spent more time talking about the injury in media sessions than he playing on the court the rest of the series. In 32 minutes of total floor time, Olynyk had a net rating of minus-51.2. Not only did Olynyk miss eight of the nine shots he took, but the Celtics were outscored by 32 while he was on the floor.

After going through exit interviews with team brass on Friday, Olynyk said there are no immediate plans for him to undergo surgery and he suggested he'll seek opinions on the best way to regain the strength and mobility in his shoulder.

The shoulder injury and the fallout will at least temporarily overshadow the promising strides the 25-year-old Olynyk showed in the first half of the season. Before the injury, the big story lines with Olynyk were either playfully breaking down his shooting percentages based on hairstyle (manbun vs. headband) or wondering if he might sneak into the 3-point contest.

The season ends with some questioning Olynyk's toughness after sitting out a couple playoff games in a series in which much of Boston's roster was banged up. It's hard to be too critical without knowing the full extent of the injury, but the fact that Olynyk isn't scheduled for surgery leaves some leery.

It's worth noting that coach Brad Stevens was staunch in his defense of Olynyk during the games he missed, stressing that Olynyk would be on the court if he was physically able to play and help the team. Stevens also limited Olynyk's floor time later in the series because of obvious rust and the troubles that Atlanta's athletic and undersized frontcourt gave Boston.

"I felt like [the shoulder] was improving [before the Game 1 aggravation]. I had games where it would feel good and games where it wouldn’t," said Olynyk. "It’s just like it would get hit every game and kind of pinch and set you back, kind of. So it was tough. I never really felt 100 percent the whole time. I never felt 80. It’s tough to deal with and tough going down that stretch of games, you want to be at your best when your best was needed. Unfortunately, we weren’t."

Olynyk was asked if the injury made it difficult to function on the court.

"Definitely difficult to function. Difficult to guard, rebound," said Olynyk. "It’s one of those things where you don’t have the same strength as you usually do, so when you’re trying to just shoot your shot normally, it’s not normal. So you really gotta focus on shooting the shot in a different way than your muscle memory is and that’s what makes it tough. You can’t really make any excuses."

Olynyk said he planned to get multiple opinions on his shoulder then huddle with team decision-makers to come up with a firm recovery plan. Olynyk and the Celtics are left to wonder what might have been if the team had better health in the postseason.

"Throughout life -- 'What if? What if?' -- but everything happens for a reason," said Olynyk. "I’ll come back stronger next year."

The frustrating finish shouldn't totally take away from what Olynyk accomplished. There're not many 7-footers who can shoot better than 40 percent beyond the 3-point arc and space the floor the way Olynyk did. He finished 37th overall in the league in ESPN's Real Plus/Minus metric at plus-2.71 (just two spots behind the often-compared-to and much-idolized Dirk Nowitzki).

A healthy Olynyk is a bargain at $3.1 million next season and that could make him an attractive trade chip as Boston tries to add impact talent this summer. If he sticks around, the Celtics can chat contract extension (he's set to reach restricted free agency in the summer of 2017).

The key is getting Olynyk healthy as to ensure a chance to build off what he accomplished over the first four months of the 2015-16 season. Asked for his summer plans, Olynyk said, "Try and get this shoulder right and then just keep working, keep getting better."

Injuries are part of the game,, but this injury to Olynyk certainly limited his effectiveness and also place a damper on his season which prior to getting injured showed him to be a much improved player from the year before.

Olynyk will be even better next year as he continues to be just about what Ainge said he would be when drafted 3 years ago.

Exactly why hasn't he taken care of this yet? Like EVERYBODY ELSE ON THIS PLANET, you should avoid the summer Olympics in Rio unless you actually want to come in contact with some kind of viral or bacterial contagion. You are a professional basketball player and your responsibility begins and ends there. Playing for your Canadian team is a luxury and should only happen if you are healthy enough to perform your regular job!!

Olynyk still weighing options for 'inevitable' shoulder surgery

http://www.csnne.com/boston-celtics/olynyk-still-weighing-options-inevitable-shoulder-surgery

BOSTON – After consulting with a number of doctors both within the Celtics organization and outside of it, it has become a matter of when – not if - Kelly Olynyk will have to have surgery on his right shoulder.

But Olynyk isn’t quite ready to commit to having it surgically repaired this summer, a summer in which the Canadian National team for which he is a key member, is still in the process of trying to qualify for the summer Olympics in Rio.

“If I rest it, I would definitely partake in the Olympic (qualifying tournament),” Olynyk told CSN at a fundraising event for Horizons for Homeless on Sunday. “That would be the reason to not get surgery at this point. If you rest it, it’ll get better but never solve the problem. That’s what we’re looking at.”

If Olynyk does decide to have surgery, he’ll have to make that call within the next week or so.

Doctors have indicated to Olynyk that his recovery time from surgery on the right shoulder would be around five months.

Getting surgery immediately would still likely result in him missing some or all of training camp. And depending on how his shoulder responds following surgery, he could potentially miss the start of the season.

That’s why Olynyk said he’ll make a decision very soon.

“I’m still looking at it,” Olynyk said. “Probably make a decision sooner than later because the recovery is so long if you do get it. It’s hard to give up, Olympics, but when you do look at it, if you get hurt it’s even worse to give up the next season. It’s a tough decision.”

“The doctors are saying it’s kind of inevitable,” Olynyk said.

Which is why if you’re betting on how this all plays out, you can expect Olynyk will have surgery and return in time for the Celtics to begin the 2016-2017 season.

This past season, Olynyk suffered a right shoulder injury against the Los Angeles Clippers in the last game prior to the All-Star break.

Olynyk went on to miss 12 regular season games due to the injury in addition to a pair in the playoffs. And when he did play, he struggled mightily in part because of the injury.

Last season, Olynyk averaged 10.0 points per game while shooting 45.5 percent from the field and career-high 40.5 percent on 3s.

IF KO waits on the surgery Danny will trade him. Count on it. Danny doesn't suffer fools gladly. If he does go for surgery now and rehabs well, he could become a significant contributor to the C's success next season.

Seems like an obvious choice; get the surgery.

The Olympics certainly are a rare opportunity, but he makes a nice living playing for a professional team. If he wants to keep getting a seven-figure income, it's time to fix the shoulder.

And, if the Olympics are such a big draw, Olynyk will still be plenty young enough to play again in 2020.

Olynyk is coming into a contract year, playing for the chance to make 8 figures rather than 7 figures. get the damn surgery already

What bothers me most about the injury is related to how it happened.

If you recall it was against the Clippers and KO had been playing really well at the time. Jordan basically hacked him across his shoulder really, really hard. He did not even go after the ball. It was a very dirty play and Jordan and should have been assessed flagrant foul.

KO needs to get back in the mix as soon as possible.

The Celtic future success does not hinge, to a great extent, on Olynyk's shoulder. At age 25 ,and after three straight years of about 20 minutes per game while competing against the other teams bench, the question can be raised as to just what his ceiling might be. Perhaps a 3 point specialist, like 6'11" Channing Frye, would be a nice role for him to fill. I assume that there are some pretty good reasons why he's been relegated to a backup role and only playing 20 minutes per game. There's still time to be a late bloomer and one of the leaders on the Celtics, but I don't like the odds.

Danny wanted him bad enough to trade up to the 13th pick. He does not appear to be a player that will be a regular starter at either PF or center. I think he is a rotation player that still needs to add consistency. I do think that he i a good fit..just not consistent.

The Celtics can build through the draft but they need to draft payers that will be starters

Kelly had surgery today. Danny said there was a lot of movement in the shoulder, moving back and forth, so the decision was made. It wasn't an obvious surgery, but a smart one.

5 months recovery period.

Kelly Olynyk undergoes successful surgery on right shoulder, may miss 5 months for Boston Celtics

The Celtics announced Kelly Olynyk underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Monday to treat the multiple subluxations that limited him in the second half of the season and the playoffs. He reportedly may be out until the beginning of the preseason.

WALTHAM -- The manbun will have plenty of time to comb his hair this summer, as the Celtics announced Kelly Olynyk had successful shoulder surgery Monday.

Olynyk has an arthroscopic procedure to repair damage caused by multiple subluxations to his right shoulder throughout the season. Olynyk missed time during the second half of the season and suffered a recurrence of the injury in the first-round playoffs series against the Atlanta Hawks.

CSNNE's A. Sherrod Blakely reported Sunday that surgery would come with an expected timetable of up to five months of recovery time. This would keep Olynyk out of the highly controversial Rio Summer Olympics this July and put him on track to return to action during the preseason.

"The doctors are saying [surgery is] kind of inevitable," Olynyk told Blakely the day before he had the procedure.

"Probably make a decision sooner than later because the recovery is so long if you do get it. It's hard to give up, Olympics, but when you do look at it, if you get hurt, it's even worse to give up next season. So it's a tough decision."

With the decision made, Olynyk will endure a long rehab that will leave him with a long layoff from shooting, which is a severe detriment to a player whose game is reliant on being a knockdown shooter.
