Hawks Trying To Trade Tim Hardaway Jr. For 2nd Round Picks
JAN 6, 2017 4:33 PM
The Atlanta Hawks traded their first round pick which became Jerian Grant in 2015 to the New York Knicks for Tim Hardaway Jr.
A season and a half later, the Hawks are interested in trading Hardaway before he hits restricted free agency this summer.
"They're already shopping Tim Hardaway for second round picks because they don't want to pay him," said Lowe.
Hardaway is averaging 11.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 21.9 minutes per game this season for the Hawks.
The Hawks have already traded Kyle Korver and they're now also shopping Paul Millsap.

MY NOTE: Hardaway makes $2.28M this year and is an RFA next year with a qualifying offer of $3.3M, so Danny could exercise control over his future by being able to match any offer and/or do a sign-and-trade. James Young makes $1.8M and is in his last year, so Danny has no control (not that he wants any). Danny could trade Young, plus a 2nd rounder, plus a small traded player exception to make the $ zero out for Atlanta. According to the ESPN Trade Machine this deal, Hardaway for Young, works. Atlanta could then just waive Young. That's like the deal that got us Perry Jones III. They gave us him, plus some $, so it was a free look for us. Do it for Atlanta, Danny.
Both Hardaway and Young are 6'6", but Young struggles to play SG while Hardaway is a SG. 6'6" is a nice size for a SG and in Hardaway's case the emphasis is on the shooting.

Hardaway is shooting a career high 44.4%, 34% from 3, 18.6 points/36mpg, 6.2 reb/36, 2.5asts/1.6TO/36mpg (1.56:1).
Young is shooting 42.9%, 28.6% from 3, 6.2 reb/36, 1.7asts/.6TO/36 (2.83:1)
Young might take better care of the ball than Hardaway, but Hardaway touches the ball more. He plays more, 22mpg, and shoots more (15.8fgas/36 vs 7.9fgas/36). Defensively I don't see how much we can lose. Young has never been a standout defender. He cannot play two, he's too slow, and he isn't big enough to play 3 in this NBA. If Brad wants points, in a hurry, he looks down the bench and sees Gerald Green. Hardaway would give him another option.
Make the call, Danny. You aren't going to be able to package Young for a big player anyway. He isn't appealing enough to be anything more than filler and his salary is so low he doesn't even fill much. Furthermore, during the next off-season, Hardaway is MUCH better trade bait than James Young.

Re: Atlanta Shopping Tim Hardaway, Jr
real GM says we have 3 second round picks next season ( not counting our own which likely goes to Bkn once we swap first with them).
http://basketball.realgm.com/nba/draft/future_drafts/yearly
if that is correct, would you think the Minny second would be enough to snag Hardaway along with Young or Green?

If they are just looking for second round picks why give them more?

Read that one reason they traded Kover was because of the emergence of Tim Hardaway Jr. So why would they trade him too?

Because . . . they are the Atlanta Hawks?
They throw tons of money at the dinosaur Howard and then go cheap by not wanting thing to sign their own good free agents? What was the long term plan that went along with the Howard signing? Sign the clown and let everyone else go?
Teams like the Hawks make me appreciate Danny Ainge even more. You've heard the term, "get over the top"? The Hawks can't even get over the middle.

Re: Atlanta Shopping Tim Hardaway, Jr
Perhaps they would just take Young all by himself? We could send the proverbial "bag of used balls" along with Young to further sweeten the deal.
Also, the Cs will not have any need for three second round picks next June so one of them could be included if necessary. If the second round pick is needed, we then get to keep the bag of balls mentioned above.
